Well, nobody asked me, but I'll give you my view of THE BAD SEED right now---which is that I always thought it was a hoot and a half. I'm guessing that the only way they could get the censors to allow them to film what was then considered a controversial property was to promise to stay as close as possible to the play and not open it up too much for the movies (i.e. make it seem more real). The problem with that was the play was extremely clumsy and stagey with a whole lot of characters and coincidences trooping through a single living room set in the course of a few very busy days. (I think my favorite is the expert on the genetic inheritance of evil who just happens to drop by.) And then there's the acting. The director has clearly told everyone not to scale their performances down for the screen, so they all seem to be playing to the second balcony and beyond. Oscar-nominated Eileen Heckart comes off worst, as she luxuriates in her two extended mad scenes, one per act. But the ending tops everything---or rather endings, as there are three of them, one right after the other. First, there's the scene in the hospital waiting room, which ended the play. Second, there's the scene on the dock, which was made because the Production Code demanded that crime be punished. Finally there's the Warner Brothers' epilogue, which reminds us that it was all only a play, so let's not take it too seriously. (Not much danger of that.) |

That's very close to my take, Fantomas. This picture fell in the middle of director Leroy's downhill slide. He made lots of memorable entertainments, but after the success of Little Women, Metro put him on a series of Joe Pasternak musicals and it seems to have kicked the stuffing out of him. Here's what we got: The Green Berets (uncredited) 1965 Moment to Moment 1964 Mary, Mary 1962 Gypsy 1961 A Majority of One 1961 The Devil at 4 O'Clock (as Mervyn Le Roy) 1960 Wake Me When It's Over 1959 The FBI Story 1958 Home Before Dark 1958 No Time for Sergeants 1956 Toward the Unknown 1956 The Bad Seed 1955 Mister Roberts 1955 Strange Lady in Town 1954 Rose Marie 1953 Latin Lovers 1952 Million Dollar Mermaid 1952 Lovely to Look at He inherited Mister Roberts after Ford left, and the result was a real bomb for which both directors deserve equal credit. IMO No Time For Sergeants was the one good picture in this lot, and it wasn't quite as good as the TV version, which wasn't nearly as good as the Broadway version, a real laff fest. The worst was a G.I. comedy called Wake Me When It's Over, with a cast that looked good on paper, but A Majority of One was awful too, with Alec Guinness trying to play a Japanese gentleman straight, and not succeeding. |

I have the first seasons of all those shows, and the second seasons of two of them. My local indy record shop has started stocking Warner Archives total, as low as $10! I picked up Rancho Notorious, Atlantis the Lost Continent, and Somewhere I'll Find You. |

I just picked up Scandal. After watching Kennedy's Women on television the other night, I decided to buy the Christine Keeler biography book and that led me to the film above. |
