Due to my country's financial troubles, money loss for the first time due to this thieving government and general avoidance of the much-hated high street for the cheaper internet, this week I have brought just one DVD: Rizzoli and Isles - Season Two. Fantastic show!

Absolutely not. I know Americans looking in at our situation think that, but living within, us Brits can see whats really going on.

Just a little more and people will feel threatened enough to act.

That's very interesting. I'm afraid you may be right.

Found a package of 21 Roy Rogers movies at Costco for $17 and change (probably 99¢ change, but I don't remember). I think they're probably all public domain, but I only had 3 or 4 of 'em already, so it was a good deal for me. Put out by Image/Madacy.

Put out by Image/Madacy.

That's the second Image/Madacy release I have heard of. The first being the recent set of all 3 Flash Gordon serials. The quality on those looks great, they look like they are the original Image releases.

Image is known for quality. Madacy...not so much. I wonder how they hooked up together. Is Madacy just distributing Image product?

Chandu - can you report back as to the quality of the prints?

There's also a supercheap version of Image's epic 5-disc "Slapstick Encyclopedia", likewise in a videobook -- about $10 just now. Amazon shows it as an Image release, but some of the reviews reference Madacy.

Several reviews mention serious quality control issues, which may or may not be a temporary glitch. One reviewer said that Image bought Madacy. Maybe Image intends to use that branding for cheaper stuff, including what are essentially paperback editions of older titles.

Image released a lot of silent film material and other vintage goodies, including the original "Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" (the team's classic silent shorts, not the PD oddities). Perhaps we can look forward to low-price reissues of those.

Many were in partnership with outside outfits, but that may not be a dealbreaker. I think "Flash Gordon" is still owned by Hearst Entertainment (their logo is on the Image DVDs I have). The Roy Rogers disc I have includes the probably copyrighted "Happy Trails" wraparounds (Roy and Dale chatting about each film for a cable TV series. Gene Autry also hosted a cable showcase, and his discs have the segments as a bonus feature.)

Half Price Books stores are everywhere. There are several around here and I love going in and browsing around. They don't always have the greatest prices on DVDs, but I love shopping for vinyl records there - the idiots people there have absolutely no idea what they're worth, so they're super cheap. Although I will never forgive them for the time I came in with two bags of movies and books, and they offered me $3.50 for everything.

Have a Half Price Books out here -- It's in Fremont so it's a bit of a drive, but generally worth a monthly visit at least.

Besides used books they have remaindered titles, frequently things I don't see anywhere else. Recently picked up a handsome biography of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and two volumes of a 50s comic strip titled "Jet Scott."

A few weeks ago, I brought in a box of books and DVDs to Half Price Books and received $20.00. When selling stuff there, it helps to keep your expectations relatively low.

Yeah, their DVD prices aren't great, especially since you can often get new DVDs for less at Amazon. But sometimes you'll find an obscure or out-of-print item. I found a remaindered, still sealed copy of Warner's Superman serials for $14.99.
