Sorry, I've tried to be good, but I just can't resist passing this on: Headline from the Blogosphere: "Bush falls in well. Lassie yawns." |

Got 9 movies in 2 purchases today. First up is The Jayne Mansfield Collection. It includes The Girl Can't Help It, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, and The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw. Next is The Elvis Collection. It includes Speedway, Viva Las Vegas, Jailhouse Rock, It Happened at the World's Fair, Spinout, and Harum Scarum. This collection appears to be a collection of previously released DVDs. At least the copies I saw Viva Las Vegas and Jailhouse Rock are in snap cases and the DVDs are double sided with pan and scan on one side and widescreen on the other. The Viva Las Vegas widescreen is nonanamorphic. But thankfully Jailhouse Rock and all the other titles are anamorphic. |

And in case you couldn't guess from the synopses up at inthebalcony.com, this week I got the Boris Karloff Collection, Inner Sanctum Collection, and Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, all from Universal. They've seemed to learn their lesson, as none of these are DVD-18s and nobody seems to be having any trouble with the "freeze up". |

"The Girl Can't Help It" is worth watching just to see and hear Little Richard. The rest of the picture is only so-so. Edmund O'Brien, is to my way of thinking, seriously miscast in this. I got news from DeepDiscountDVD that Abbott & Costello Season 1 is in the mail. Whoopee. The show was only so-so but the extras on this one looked to be special. I hope they are. My wife and I just finished watching all of Season 5 of Smallville last night. Of course, it ends with a cliffhanger that I will have to wait a year to see how it comes out. I can't get our local CW channel over the air and the cable company isn't carrying the channel in HD. Smallville is one of those shows that requires widescreen and surround sound for me. |

Today was another John Wayne bargain day at Wal-mart. Picked up Flying Tigers from the $5.50 rack and for $9.44 a two pack of The Comancheros/The Big Trail. Most of the WB two packs are double sided. But this 20th Century Fox set is on separate DVDs each in a half case. Hopefully Fox who has had trouble with their double sided releases has given up on the double sided format. |

Haven't even had a chance to start on yesterday's purchases and I received two orders today. Currently a Best Buy exclusive Universal's The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection which includes Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters, and Monster on the Campus. This set is covered very nicely by Gravy on the inthebalcony.com site. Also received the early Elvis film Loving You. This title is out of print and I had to get it through an Amazon reseller (iNetVideo). Been awhile since I've seen this one. But I remember it as having some of Elvis' best acting. Mainly because the role is quasi-autobiographical. Elvis plays a country bumpkin singer who is discovered by Lizabeth Scott and thrust into the limelight. |

marlin, A piece of trivia about Loving You, if you're not already aware of it. The piano player who accompanies Elvis on the title song is Mike Stoller, one half the lyricist/composer team of Leiber and Stoller. They, of course, wrote all the songs for this movie, for Jailhouse Rock and other Elvis films and various recordings. They were also the driving force as songwriters and producers behind the Coasters. They also wrote such famous other songs as "Kansas City" (certainly one of the most recorded songs around), "Hound Dog", and a host of others. |

I got the same sets that Gravy got, plus the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes collection. And as usual, I expect that new sets will beckon at the store long before I find time to watch even half of today's new acquisitions. |

This week I picked up the Frankenstein (1931) 75th Anniversary Collection, the new 3-disc restored Criterion Seven Samurai, The Munsters 2-movie "Fright Fest" (I never liked the TV show, but the 1966 feature film Munster Go Home! is actually pretty good), and -- thanks to good ol' Trevor at www.downunderdvd.com -- The Desert Hawk. |

I got 3 cheap PD discs of The Burns & Allen Show and yesterday I received the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I've another package coming that should arrive today. It contains the first season of The Bill Cosby Show (not to be confused with The Cosby Show) and the 4th season of Ellen. |

Today was a 3 DVD Friday. Fortunately all 3 DVDs came from Dollar Tree. Got The Adventures of Fu Manchu and Mr. and Mrs. North. Each contains 4 episodes of the TV show and a bonus Betty Boop cartoon. The other DVD is a Classic TV Christmas collection with 6 Christmas episodes. It has 2 Red Skelton episodes, Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Jack Benny, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and Where's Raymond hosted by Ray Bolger. |

So far this week I've received one DVD title, the 8th (final) season of Three's Company but I have 3 more coming that could all arrive today: that 2nd volume of the Humphrey Bogart Signature Collection, the 3rd X-Men movie and The Planet's Funniest Animals: Holiday Spectacular. I'm also expecting a copy of Buddy Ebsen's autobiography, "The Other Side of Oz". I won a used copy of that in a trivia contest that a classic list I'm on has every Sunday (except for certain holidays). |
