Glad to see you're back LG! :)

Recently I picked up the Val Lewton two-fer CAT PEOPLE/CURSE OF
THE CAT PEOPLE DVD from the Val Lewton box set, and today I bought the I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE/THE BODY SNATCHER two-fer. Got each two-fer
for $8.95 each. I know LG recommended the entire box, but I wanted
what amounts to the best from the box, as I know I'll never watch them all. Plus,
monetary constraints as well as space limitations all played into my decision.

For me, the following are upcoming must-have DVD releases:

10/31/06 - Martin and Lewis Vol. 1 (Par) Box set. It's their early movies
making me look forward to Vol. 2 and their work with Frank Tashlin!

11/7/06 - Sergant York (Gary Cooper) (WB) Part of the Gary Cooper Signature Collection and only title from set to be sold seperately if I'm correct?

11/14/06 - Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 4 (WB) Includes
a full disc of Frank Tashlin cartoons!

11/14/06 - Forbidden Planet SE (WB) Get the limited edition tin box that comes with a mini Robbie The Robot

11/21/06 - Elvis Presley: Ed Sullivan Shows - FINALLY!

11/21/06 - Classic Comedy Teams (WB) Rare movies from Laurel and
Hardy, The Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello. Classic comedy fans can
rejoice, (even though these films aren't the highlight of these artists careers)--
I have seen the L&H movies as well as the A&C movies and there's more
than enough to make me laugh and satisfy me.

11/28/06 - Superman: The Theatrical Movie Serials Collection (WB)
Too bad the ultimate box set of all the Superman movies (released
the same day) is the only way to get the remastered Max Fleisher
Superman cartoons from the early 1940's--though a nice collection is available from Image DVD, but it's from 35mm prints and not the original negatives like the WB will have)

Regards,
Beatle Bob

Today I received one title...The Dick Cavett Show: Hollywood Greats. Included are interviews with Katharine Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, Mel Brooks, Bette Davis, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum and several others. To me, the 2-part interview with Katharine Hepburn alone is probably worth the price of the set.

I got Billy Wilder Speaks which I am looking forward to seeing. Wilder wrote and directed so many great films and also probably has stories to tell about getting out of Nazi Germany.

Unfortunately, it will probably be a few weeks before I can get to this.

Cal, I'm thinkin' The Fountainhead can be bought separately as well.

A couple of discs from my buddy at Grapevine Video arrived today, including Trapped by the Mormons (1922). I also hit the Tower sale and found the Criterion Monterey Pop and a 3-disc set of rock videos of the 1980s (yes, Devo and I plan to "Whip It!").

And by the way by the way, I think I ordered that Grapevine stuff on Thursday, or maybe Wednesday. I wish everybody shipped as fast as they do!

At first, I didn't think I would be getting anything this week until I found out a new Johnny Cash DVD (of a concert from 1993 in Ireland) was being released this Tuesday. So I'm getting that at least.

I received 4 discs of westerns today. Each was a triple-feature put out by Warner Brothers. Two of the discs are of John Wayne movies and two are of Randolph Scott films. The titles:

The Big Stampede/Ride Him, Cowboy/Haunted Gold (John Wayne)

The Telegraph Trail/Somewhere In Sonora/The Man From Monterey (John Wayne)

Fort Worth/Colt .45/Tall Man Riding (Randolph Scott)

The Man Behind the Gun/Thunder Over the Plains/Riding Shotgun (Randolph Scott)

The John Wayne movies are all just under an hour each and each triple-feature is on one side of a disc. The Randolph Scott movies are in color and run from 74 to 83 minutes. These are double-sided discs, 1 movie on one side and 2 movies on the other side. I checked briefly one of the Wayne discs and one of the Scott discs and I'm pleased with the picture and sound quality on both. Amazon.com is charging $11.23 for each triple-feature right now. That's less than $4 a movie.

The UPS man just brought me another set, Gary Cooper: The Signature Collection which includes 5 movies...Sergeant York, The Fountainhead, The Wreck of the Mary Deare, Dallas and Springfield Rifle. There aren't as many extras on these as there have been on other movies in these Signature sets. Most of the extras are on the 2-disc Sergeant York set.

Today I received a pair of Roy Rogers discs. One features (in Tru Color) Bells of Coronado. I think this version is by Lion's Gate (I know there's at least one other inferior disc release of it out there somewhere). The second disc, from Roan, is a triple-feature: Days of Jesse James, King of the Cowboys and Roll On Texas Moon. The last of these is directed by William Witney.

Hey Rog,

You'll soon know that Trucolor isn't. It has always looked to me like something between the two-strip Technicolor of the late 1920s and early '30s and the three-strip Technicolor we all know and love. There seems to be some colors and shades missing from the palette.

Follow Balcony-ites,

Thought you might like to know that Deep Discount DVD has their semi-annual additional 20% off sale going now. Most DVDs end up being in the 40-50% off range. This code at checkout will work: DVDTALK.

I had picked up absolutely nothing this week; screeners arrived from several companies, I’ve been out of town, and if I sat down to watch all the DVDs I’ve received in the past month, it would take me about 3 weeks if I go without sleep or potty breaks.

That said, I did go ahead and order Sergeant York, Julius Caesar, and Police Squad!

Next week, I can look forward to the arrival of The Adventures of Superman: Seasons 5 & 6, the Bing Crosby: Screen Legend Collection, Looney Tunes: Golden Collection Vol. 4, and the Forbidden Planet boxed set (which I am buying because I’m some sort of nut; I don’t even LIKE the darn movie).

As far as older TV goes, I'll be getting The Adventures of Superman (seasons 5 & 6) and a directors collection of Gunsmoke. I'll also be getting that Looney Tunes set...and a few other things.

A few weeks ago, I was at my brother's and I was talking about some westerns and his son asked me when was the last time I watched something that had been made in the last 50 years. Consarned whippersnapper...

Another week and the DVDs cycle begins anew. Today I've received...

The Young Riders: The Complete First Season
Abilene Town
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: 2-Disc Special Edition

Abilene Town is from one of those no-name companies and I got it for a penny (plus shipping) from an Amazon Marketplace seller...and I think I overpaid on it. The print's pretty bad.

My latest purchase was the Tarzan set 2 with the 6 RKO films. Watched 4 of them over the last few days. So far the only one I would not watch again would be Tarzan and the Amazons. It had it's moments but was generally kinda boring.
