Well it almost worked. Usually if I have movies ordered and pick some up in town I'll find the order in my mailbox that evening. But despite picking up Flyboys yesterday me order didn't arrive until today. Just received Red planet Mars and the Monsters and Madmen Collection. |

This week, I'll no doubt pick up Scorsese's The Departed. On their way to me are the Mr. Moto Vol. 2 set and a pair of Criterions, Green for Danger and Bicycle Thieves. |

I just got LE PLAISIR and THE EARRINGS OF MME D... by Max Ophuls from Amazon UK, and Jacques Rivette's first feature, PARIS NOUS APPARTIENT, which as far as I know never was shown in the US, from a Singapore dealer. It's about spies, cold war paranoia and a sinister World Committee that's behind everything bad that happens. I'll report on all three when I get around to them. |

Just received Robot Monster. I have a theory that all 50s sci-fi films have a certain amount of charm which brings some fun to even the worst films. Robot Monster proves the point by being both the worst of films and a fun watch. |

If you like "The Departed", it behooves you to search out the film that inspired it, "Infernal Affairs". Although it doesn't have Jack Nicholson, it does have three of Hong Kong's top actors and a story and style that I found stronger than the American version. There are also two sequels, or rather one prequel and one sequel. "Infernal Affairs 2", the prequel, actually is very good and adds quite a bit of texture to the first movie - filling in many of the blanks only hinted at and seemingly unimportant in the first film. They can be viewed seperately, but together they weave an epic story. The third film isn't as strong, but it does resolve loose ends from the first two films. A box set of all three is available at Amazon. |

At the local Big Lots store today, I picked up They Came to Cordura, Adam Had Four Sons, and the set of 3 Gidget movies, for just $3 each. Angels over Broadway (which I already own) was also available, and there were a few more recent movies at the same price point. |

Borders is running their yearly clearance, and they had a few DVDs on the discount rack. I found the original Image release of Chaplin's LIMELIGHT for $5. This DVD is out of print and contains the full length restoration of the original release version, as opposed to the edited Warner disc. It was one of the few Chaplin Image releases that I didn't have. I know LIMELIGHT isn't prime Chaplin, but I find even lesser Chaplin films interesting. |

Picked up the Tim Allen film Zoom or as it is titled on the DVD Zoom: Academy for Superheroes. Rather plodding, although I did enjoy parts of it. I'd give it a small recommendation as either a rental or watching it when it comes out on cable. |

I was thinking of picking up Zoom as I do like super-hero movies, even super-hero parodies, but at the time I was thinking of getting it, I saw that it was rated at #7 on the IMDB's list of the 100 worst movits of all time. Since you liked it somewhat, I may keep an eye for it in case I find it at a bargain-basement price... |

After watching the Zoom DVD down at the farm I went to watch some extras up at the house. The disc wouldn't load. It recognized it as a DVD but wouldn't bring u[p the Sony logo and finish loading the disc. A little experimenting showed that pressing the Top Menu button on the remote would finish loading the disc. There was a scratch on the disc. So today I exchanged it. The new disc still has the same problem on my Toshiba SD-K710 player. However it plays just fine on an older model Pioneer, an Apex, a Panasonic, and the DVD drive in my computer. It is only the Toshiba which gives problems and even then you can get it to work by pressing the Top Menu button. Oh and Zoom is now # 31 on IMDb's list of 100 worst movies. So obviously someone likes it to raise it that much. Although I can't agree with the 16.8% who rated it a 10. |

I went old-school with my purchases this week: ALFRED HITCHCOCK: THE EARLY YEARS (3-Disc set) W.C. FIELDS: 6 Short Films KID MONK BARONI AMERICAN SLAPSTICK BICYCLE THIEVES Marlin, what did you think of ZOOM? Being a collector of all super-hero movies, I am destined to pick this one up eventually, but I am curious as to if it is at least watchable. |

Will do, LG. The only problem is deciding which to watch first! I am leaning heavily towards BICYCLE THIEVES, but the W.C. Fields films look good, too, and that Hitchcock set... |

There isn't anything actively bad in Zoom. I found it mildly enjoyable. It has some good moments but overall is fairly lacking. If Sky High gets 4 out of 5 stars I'd give Zoom 2. But I wouldn't argue with anyone giving it 1. My 15 year old nephew really liked it. |
