I did get those Universal classics -- So Proudly We Hail, No Man of Her Own, Unconquered, and Scarface. Hey, two Karloff films and two Paulette Goddard films, plus Gable & Lombard together! Yay! I also got the Tyrone Power Swashbuckler collection as well. |

Received an order today. Jason of Star Command the complete series. Enjoyed Space Academy. Hopefully this sequel will be as good or better. The Black Scorpion. The 50's sci-fi film not the Roger Corman movie or TV series. Up the Academy. Bet Mad Magazine still wishes they hadn't tried to keep up with National Lampoon. |

I'm proud to say that I've never walked out on a motion picture (if I can't conquer a stinkeroo with unbridled sarcasm, then I'm worthless and weak) but I came close with Up the Academy. Abominable. |

I went a little Criterion-crazy this week, picking up Army of Shadows, Haxan, Sansho the Bailiff and the new 2-disc The Third Man. In addition, I made off with (well, paid for) So Proudly We Hail, Scarface (1932) and the 2-disc version of Constantine. |

Most of this week's haul consists of stuff that I either found rooting around in bargain bins or adding to the voluminous Britcom archives here at Rancho Yesteryear. For example, I bought a fistful of Mr. and Mrs. Norths on DVD, the 1952-54 TV mystery series based on the popular radio program of the same name. Bought three sets of Britcoms (comprising three DVDs each): On the Up, a series created by Bob Larbey, who also wrote As Time Goes By; Chef!, a sitcom starring comedian Lenny Henry as a temperamental gourmet chef; and Three of a Kind, a sketch comedy that also features Henry but is mainly of interest for the early TV work of Tracey Ullman (and a comedian named David Copperfield--who does not do magic, by the way). I also rounded out my Steptoe and Son and Dad's Army collections by buying the last two series of each. Best of Bonanza - A collection of public domain episodes from the popular TV oater (1959-71), plus three episodes of Wagon Train. (Warning: the company that released this has replaced the Bonanza theme with some truly awful-sounding "cowboy" music, so if you're a purist, caveat emptor.) And finally, to demonstrate that I like the sitcoms on this side of the pond just as much, Scrubs: The Complete Fifth Season and F Troop: The Complete Second Season. ("Not in front of the men, sir...") |

HAXAN is really good. Got it as a birthday gift not so long ago. I prefer the slightly truncated version (90 minutes?) featuring a narration by the great Wm. S. Burroughs but the complete 2 to 2 1/2 hour original restoration is mighty damned creepy in its own crude right but has a tendency toward overkill. Which version do you prefer? The Witches Sabbath scenes are unforgettably nightmarish. |

I got three DVDs of silent Charley Chase shorts from A-1 Video last weekend at Cinevent. I've watched two shorts so far. One (Bromeo and Juliet) I have in a better version on a KINO disc, and the other (Fraidy Cat) looks okay, but was transfered at the wrong speed. There are a whole lot of titles on these discs that I've never seen before though, so I have high hopes for them. |

I'm a purist, so naturally I prefer the original version. I have especially good memories tied to this DVD. I picked it up when it was originally released, and not long afterward, Mrs. Ratzkywatzky and I held a Halloween party. The entire house was lit only by Jack-o-lanterns, spooky music was playing from the stereo, and I put HAXEN on for suitable atmosphere. Slowly but surely guests began to drift toward the living room and stared in amazement at the flickering images coming from the set. Once the guests came under the spell of this silent, few left the room. "This movie is f'ed up," was the general consensus. |

I have not watch my DVD yet, Mantan, but I am hoping to get the chance tomorrow. I actually had Haxan on VHS (I think I still do, somewhere), and I don't remember that version being 2.5 hours long; so it must have been the shorter version you mentioned. I thought it was pretty cool, and definitely a little screwy, so I was happy to pick it up on DVD. Iggy's comments have me right curious about the longer, original version, which is the one I will watch. |

Well, let's see... This week's Costco trip netted me the big Rio Bravo boxed set deluxe extra-special edition thingy, plus the Kate Hepburn 100th Collection. Amazon sends me the Dean & Jerry Vol. 2 box, Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster, and Monster Zero. And a trip to Hollywood Video's $7.50 each bin netted me Last King of Scotland, Dreamgirls, and Notes on a Scandal. |

LG, is that Special Edition of Hitchcock's It Takes a Thief a new release? Is it a single release or also part of a boxed set? And who released it? Thanks. |

Today I got the 3rd and 4th seasons of The Cosby Show which were released simultaneously. They have pretty ugly covers. |

This is a single-disc restored version that is supposed to be absolutely stunning... it's from Paramount, and it comes with four featurettes, commentary by Peter Bogdanovich, and who knows what all. |
