I actually have Hangman's Knot but haven't seen it yet. Maybe I'll start my Scott viewing with that one. |

This week I'm picking up the Gene Wilder film The World's Greatest Lover and the Something Weird double-feature Hooked (a/k/a Curfew Breakers) / The Flaming Teenage. I also made the mistake of asking my pal Paul Panzer about the three "Glamour Collections" from Universal; he strongly suggested that I buy Marlene Dietrich (I was gonna) and Mae West (I wasn't gonna) and skip the Lombard set but shoot, why get two and not all three? Amazon's got 'em for $19 each and free shipping. That's 16 films for $57, or *rapidly calculating via the Korean 'Calcuba' method* uhhhh.... $355 per movie. No, wait, that can't be right. *trying the American 'count on your fingers' method* about $3.50 per film. Even if some of 'em stink, who cares? I haven't been able to go to the movies for $3.50 since I saw the first Star Wars picture at the mall in Akron, unless you count the rather cheezy "third run" theatre here in town, where I saw Bewitched (don't ask). |

I am of the same mind, LG, which is a scary thought in itself. *L* I wanted the Mae West set for sure, was 50-50 on the Marlene Dietrich collection, and had little interest in the Carole Lombard movies. The low price has convinced me to grab all three. My order for TOO LATE FOR TEARS is in, so I will grab that, too. |

Batman, how's the quality on those Glamour Collection discs? I may get the Carole Lombard set but not this month. That's because I decided that I would buy only westerns this month. The first came in the mail today, Glenn Ford in The Violent Men... |

Rog, I actually won't be picking up the Glamour Collections until next Tuesday. I have restricted myself to going every second Tuesday, due to the distance, and I forgot this is not my week to go. The sets are on hold for me, so I will pop a movie in next Tuesday evening and let you know the quality. |

I’ve read 3 or 4 reviews of the Glamour Queen sets and the prints all appear to be acceptable or better. I’ve signed on for all of them. Despite “The Raven”, I feel some need to support Universal on these multi-film collections. And I’ve made too many pleasant discoveries in 1930’s films that no one has ever heard of to pass up the Lombard set. |

I got the Lombard set last week (the local store had put it out on the shelves early, the checkout girl rang it up as a generic item, having apparently never heard of release dates, let alone Lombard). The films look just fine, and I'm perfectly happy with the double-sided format, since these are items that probably never would get released otherwise. I've watched two already (Hands Across the Table, Love Before Breakfast); they're short, sweet and funny, and I would absolutely recommend the set--worth the cost for the ones I've already seen, with and four more films I look forward to watching. |

Thanks for the review of the Lombard set, Bonga. For the price, I think I will go for that one, too. I have found DVDs released a week early; apparently stores can be fined heavily for having new DVDs on the shelves before the announced release date. |

I forget if I mentioned it but I've decided to get only westerns this month. The Violent Men arrived yesterday and today I got The Mark of Zorro, 4 For Texas and The Duel at Silver Creek. |

I had good luck today at a library sale, netting 21 DVDs at $3 apiece. Now, some were Alphas, including Aerial Gunner and Sky Raiders, but others included Hangman's Knot, Born to Kill, The Set-Up, House of Bamboo, Retromedia's Queen Kong, a couple Mondo Macabro DVDs (Panic Beats and Satanico Pandemonium), a couple Something Weird items (including The Black Cat), and a couple examples of Euro-horror from Image. I think I'll be heading back to see what remains tomorrow, if I get the chance. Harry |

Great stuff there! I mean, not "great" in the term we usually think of, but "great for $3" if you ask me. Wait'll you see The Black Cat (I assume that's the one I have, paired with The Fat Black Pussycat). You'll think you're having a fever dream. Weird, weird movie! |

I got another pair of westerns today, Red River with John Wayne (like you didn't know that) and High Plains Drifter with Clint Eastwood. |

Yep, I consider myself quite fortunate. The Black Cat is indeed paired with The Fat Black Pussycat; I think I may bump it forward in the viewing list. Today I picked up the new Carole Lombard collection; saw it in Walmart and just couldn't keep from getting it right away. |

After hearing a report that some "pro-family" organization or other was condemning Wal-Mart for selling Brokeback Mountain, I stopped in and bought one. Gotta do my part to keep America free, don't I? |

I hope to pick up Fox's "Laurel and Hardy" set this week. I know, I know. Some of the Boy's worst. But, I don't care. These Fox films were actually my first introduction to L&H, over thirty years ago, and I'd like to have them in my dvd collection. My opinions on the films have veered back and forth a bit through the years. At times I've been aghast at their charmlessness, compared to their Roach-era classics, but at other times, I just look at them through the prism of mild, kid-friendly, matinee hi-jinx, and find them pleasant time-killers. I was initially intersted in those recent Universal 'glamour' sets, especially the Carole Lombard one, which included a film I'd never seen (the 1931 one, whatever it was called). The bad luck I've had with Universal's dvd-18's made me trepidatious enough, but once I saw the covers to the sets, I just couldn't bear getting any of them. I found them rather repellent (could they be any 'more' testosterone-withering? might just as well frame an Erte print and put it on my wall). Oh, well. At least the upcoming Charlie Chan set seems to have a super-nifty cover. |
