Got the last episode of "Prime Suspect" from the UK which for some reason has not been released in the U.S. despite being shown on PBS months ago. This one, by the way, is in widescreen and looks a lot better than previous outings. Had to watch this one right away as I am a big fan of Helen Mirren's outstanding acting. Also got the old series, "The Ascent of Man" with Jacob Bronowski, also from the U.K. I'm a documentary fan but it will be a while until I get around to this one. The backlog of DVDs to watch has grown to mountain size. |

With the rather expensive Land of the Giants coming out this month I'm trying to limit my DVD purchases. But I was tempted enough that I picked up the Cult Camp Classics volume 1 Sci-fi Thrillers which includes The Giant Behemoth, Queen of Outer Space, and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman. After all it was released last month 2 days before my birthday. So I can cheat a little and call it a belated birthday present.

I have another coming....it's not supposed to hit stores until next Tuesday but I was notified 2 days ago it'd been shipped so it could actually get here by the end of this week. This one is the 2nd season of Wanted: Dead or Alive starring Steve McQueen. |

More drunken sailor spending: I found that VCI Entertainment set of Cisco Kid Monogram programmers at Oldies.com, split into two volumes for $5 apiece. Not a bad bargain, to be sure... While I was at Oldies.com, I purchased a pair of Shotgun Slade collections (I love this TV show) and a trio of DVDs featuring Gangbusters (the TV version) and The Roy Rogers Show. They also had a special on two of the Platinum Hopalong Cassidy DVD releases containing five Hoppy movies apiece, so I couldn't turn that down. And I rounded out this week with The Woman in the Window (1944) and the Lone Ranger set with the 1938 serial everybody's been stoked about. (I blame Gravy for this last purchase.) |

Yeah, I know this is going to sound like I just started shoving items into a big honkin' shopping cart...but I swear close to seventy-five percent of the contents were either stuff I had on pre-order or were coupon buys... A ton of television nostalgia: the 1960-62 Mr. Magoo cartoon series ("Road hog!"), Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, Space Ghost and Dino Boy, Gomer Pyle-USMC: Season 2, Gunsmoke: Season 1, Perry Mason: Season 2, Volume 1, Rat Patrol: Season 2, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 3, Volume 1, Bewitched: Season 5, Wanted: Dead or Alive: Season 2, and The Loretta Young Show: Season 1. (This last one's a misnomer because there are only thirty episodes in the set, whereas Loretta's freshman season had thirty-six.) From the other side of the pond, the fourth and final series of Home to Roost, the sixth series of My Family, and the second series of The Two Ronnies. I also bought a disc entitled Morecambe and Wise: The Surviving Footage from the First Series and the Complete Second Series, which is pretty much what the name implies. I also purchased Ace in the Hole (1951) and found a good deal on the remaining volumes (three through eight) of the Platinum Hopalong Cassidy DVDs. Impulse buy of the week: Mill Creek Entertainment's releases of TV series The Buccaneers (1956-57) and Sherlock Holmes (1954-55) at DVD Pacific for about eight bucks apiece. |

The Hoppy eight-disc series on Platinum is one of the best budget buys around, given the high quality of the prints. I don't know where you bought yours, igsjr, but I picked up mine through Amazon's 4-for-3 deal, which dropped the price of each $6.99 disc to about $5.25. That's $1.05 per movie. |

I got them just like you did, George--the only diff is that I bought 3-8 via the Amazon deal and the first two volumes from Oldies.com for $5 apiece. |

Picked up Babylon 5 The Lost Tales today. I figured most stores would have it but I only found it at Wal-mart. Also picked up Hawmps? at the local truck stop for $3.33. It is a Goodtimes DVD. Don't know if it is out of print but I didn't see it lised on amazon.com. |

I wanted that LAND OF THE GIANTS set, but the price is waaay to steep for a 50+ episode show. Hopefully a cheaper release, without all the bells and whistles, is coming down the road. |

Hmm. Popeye showed up but I think the local P.O. must be using my Film Noir box as a paperweight. Grr. |

I've gotten a number of DVDs in the past week, including the Criterion/Eclipse collection of Raymond Bernard films, the four MGM noirs, the Criterion Ace in the Hole, the 10-film Warners Noir collection, the 2-disc special edition of The Monster Squad, Woody Woodpecker, Popeye, Hot Fuzz, a few other things. |
