A trip to R5 Records (the successor to the local Tower Records) netted me the serial The Mystery Squadron with Bob Steele, Hard Candy (a practically new suspense film), and a collection of educational films of the 1950s.

I rented Hard Candy last year and liked it very much. There's only about 4 or 5 actors (with the 2 main characters taking up 95% of the screen time) and it's very pschologically charged. Unlike today's films, there isn't blood and guts galore. Very good.

Oh the danger to my wallet when i go out to just get one little DVD. Today is the release day for the "Robocop 20th Anniversary Collectors Edition" which I finally found at the Wal-Mart on the other side of town. I could have gone straight home. But no, i just had to stop by Target where I ended up getting "The Host" and "Elvis the Hollywood Collection" which includes "Kissin' Cousins", "Charro!", "Girl Happy", "Live a Little, Love a Little", "Stay Away, Joe", and "Tickle Me".

I received a fun Republic film, Sons of Adventure, from a Balconeer (review up this weekend) and a nice coupon from Borders, which sent me rummaging through the Criterions and resulted in the addition to my collection of #316, Ran.

Picked up Absolute Zero, a disaster flick where a new ice age is coming in a single day. It comes nowhere The Day After Tomorrow which I consider a good disaster film. But if you like disaster flicks with extra cheese then Absolute Zero is a fun waste of time.

NoVacancy with Luke Wilson.........not bad, great build up in suspense......the Actor Frank Whaley playing the mutant spawn of Norman Bates and Mr Wilson (the Joe Kearns one, the only one)....not overly bloody......but the violence gets a bit out of control.....in other words glad I waited for the rental.....not the movie ticket.

A trip to a local used DVD place netted me a couple more Criterions... Fellini's 8 1/2 (Criterion #140) and Bresson's au hasard Balthazar (#297).

I'd be interested to hear about the extras on those two when you get around to them. The extras on RAN are up there with the best.

I own the Criterion 8 1/2 two-disc set. The transfer of the film is fantastic, and being that the movie ranks in my top ten, I've watched it several times. I can't remember watching any of the special features beyond the trailer, but here is the description of disc two from Criterion:

"Disc two features Fellini's rarely seen first film for television, Fellini: A Director's Notebook (1969). Produced by Peter Goldfarb, this imagined documentary of Fellini is a kaleidoscope of unfinished projects, all of which provide a fascinating and candid window into the director's unique and creative process."

For the film alone, the disc is highly recommended.

I finally picked up Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1 today, and it is deserving of all of the superlatives that have been heaped on it. It will likely be my pick for DVD of the year.

I also was in an Elvis mood, and I found the Elvis - Aloha from Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) package on sale. It's a nice set, nearly as good as the similarly packaged '68 Comeback Special (Deluxe Edition).

Late Bresson ranks up there with Antoinioni on my boredom meter, but somehow that donkey stays on my mind. Anybody seen AU HASARD BALTHAZAR? Any cool extras on that DVD?

Notably, a 1966 TV show on the film with members of the cast and crew.

Purchased a pair of public domain DVDs, The Beulah Show: Volume 1 and Roy Rogers and Dale Evans: Volume 3 from Oldies.com.

Also: The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1 from Columbia House (cashed in some "Fun Cash" credit and picked it up for $15.77...even with CH's "arm-and-a-leg" shipping and handling I still ended up with the lowest price online).

Finally, Amazon.co.uk is having a sale on classic films, most of which are under five pounds ($10.0934 US at the current rate of exchange). I bought the Region 2 4-disc Ben Hur collection (but only for the 1926 silent version) and the 3-disc Wizard of Oz for 4.97 pounds and a trio of the Universal Laurel & Hardy Region 2 DVDs: The Bohemian Girl and Related Shorts, Married Life and Anita Garvin and More Brushes with the Law.

A different day, a different used DVD store. Today, I acquired William Wyler's Dodsworth, Sinatra and his Rat Packers in Robin and the 7 Hoods, The Big Combo with Cornel Wilde and Richard Conte, and a couple of Kinos, Wyler's Counsellor at Law with John Barrymore and Thelma Todd and Fritz Lang's Hangmen Also Die. None was more than $10.
