Oh the dangers of visiting the DVD section of Wal-Mart while grocery shopping! Picked up a double feature of The Longest Yard remake and Varsity Blues.

Everytime a Video store closes I generally will shed a tear and also feel a little dirty as a scour thru the stock they are liquidating. I know I should feel a little guilt ridden but considering all the money I have spent on late fees and in many cases bad service, it is a form of sweet revenge....sweet cold revenge...perhaps in the tradition of Khan....

anyhow this is what I snagged for only $7.50 per disc

Insomnia..............Criterion
The Vanishing........Criterion
Kagamusha...........Criterion
M.........................Criterion
Samurai trilogy.....Criterion

plus an assortment of documentaries and other films that are rarely found this cheap.......

till next

This is probably been the single biggest week of DVD’s arriving in the mail since I began collecting the darn things seven years ago. I’m almost embarrassed to admit how bad my addiction has become.

First, I received all of the Criterion discs that I ordered. Bob Le Flambeur, Brazil, Hopscotch, La Bete Humaine, Le Corbeau, Le Samourai, M, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Quai des Orfevres, Secret Honor, The Bad Sleep Well, The Fallen Idol , The Hidden Fortress, The King of Kings, The Last Wave, The Most Dangerous Game, The Phantom of Liberty, Viridiana, Walkabout and Written on the Wind. I figure I won’t need to grab any more Criterions until Two-Lane Blacktop comes out and my pre-ordered copy of The Lady Vanishes arrives in November. (Now if there’s a sale somewhere, all bets are off.)

For some odd reason, I went surfing to see if I could find a copy of North of the Great Divide, a Roy Rogers Western, only to see that it’s out of print. I found a used copy available at Amazon Marketplace (the disc is okay, but the box was badly cracked) and while I was there I decided to go ahead and get some other Rogers movies that I’ve been wanting to see. The ones that have arrived already are Down Dakota Way, The Far Frontier, South of Caliente and Springtime in the Sierras.

After watching and reviewing the VCI Weiss-O-Rama set, I’ve found myself bitten by the silent bug again. My pre-ordered copy of Laurel & Hardy’s Laughing 20s arrived this week, along with two silent comedy compilations—Krazy Keystone Komedies and The Silent Comedy Mafia #1. I managed to get hold of Rich at Sunrise Silents by e-mail (thanks, Gravy) and get a copy of It’s the Old Army Game, in addition to Clara Bow in Mantrap and Louise Brooks in Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em. Via Grapevine Video, I bought more Brooks in Beggars of Life, plus Raymond Griffith’s Hands Up! and Harry Langdon in His First Flame (with Picking Peaches as an extra). Mary Pickford’s My Best Girl and Sparrows (I’m going to try this one out on Halloween) round out the silent purchases. (Addendum: For some odd reason, I thought I had the Warner’s version of Chaplin’s City Lights, so I foolishly sold my Image copy. I rectified this mistake, and it arrived this week as well.)

While looking over Gravy’s film-noir-on-DVD collection, I noticed that I didn’t have VCI’s Forgotten Noir sets in mine, so I took care of that soon enough. I also decided to add the Region 2 disc of Nicholas Ray’s Bigger Than Life, something I had had my eye on for quite some time.

The Serial Squadron’s King of the Mounties, Volume 2 made its way to my mailbox this week, as well as assorted copies of Champagne for Caesar, The Cooler, The Naked Spur and Of Mice and Men. I also plunked down some cash for a couple of Bogart discs that I’ve been wanting for a while now, The Caine Mutiny and The Humphrey Bogart Signature Collection: Volume 2, which contains Across the Pacific, Action in the North Atlantic, All Through the Night, Passage to Marseilles and The Maltese Falcon (1941)—along with the 1931 and 1936 (Satan Met a Lady) versions, too.

I guess the only TV-related disc I purchased was Cap’n Crunch and Friends, a compendium of Jay Ward’s funny commercials for the cereal products Cap’n Crunch, Quisp and Quake. That, and the first series of the Doctor in the House spin-off Doctor in Charge and the seventh series of Terry and June, both Britcoms and both in Region 2.

Weird. I got absolutely NO discs this week, except for the Serial Squadron one. Lightest week in DVD history for me!

Let me know the quality of Cap'n Crunch, wouldja?

I can tell you right now, 'cause I watched it last night. Someone originally recorded these commercials on a videocasette and then dubbed it to DVD--they're watchable, but considering what I paid for it it's a disappointment.

Not only do you get Cap'n Crunch commercials, you get some for Quisp and Quake (the "rivalry" between these two cereals was one of the greatest marketing ploys ever...plus I loved the fact that William Conrad was the voice of Quake) and the Quake knock-off, Quangaroos. There are also a fistful of Cheerios/Cocoa Puffs/Trix/Jets spots featuring Frostbite Falls' most famous resident, Bullwinkle J. Moose. (It also includes a real oddity: a short-lived cereal called "Wheat Hearts" plugged by Peabody and Sherman.)

If you're a Jay Ward nut, you'll have to have it--but had I known that the quality left much to be desired, I could have waited for a used copy.

Remember: "You can't get away with the Crunch...'cause the Crunch always gives you away!"

I also turned out to get nothing this week. I mentioned earlier I had 4 coming...so now they might all arrive on Monday but could show up a bit later since I used super-cheap shipping...

Wal*Mart has a Halloween section with DVDs for 5 bucks each. I picked up THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE, ROSEMARY's BABY and LIFEBOAT.

Earlier this week I bought 5 double feature DVDs for a buck 50 each.
THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE/BEAST FROM YUCCA FLATS
DEAD MEN WALK/THE MONSTER MAKER
ATOM AGE VAMPIRE/REVOLT OF THE ZOMBIES
NIGHTMARE CASTLE/BEAST FROM THE HAUNTED CAVE
BLOODLUST/SWEENY TODD

These double features were purchased at Walgreens.

Ya gotta love Halloween!!

I hope the quality of those double-features is good... they're all very entertaining grade-z movies. Bloodlust is actually a remake of The Most Dangerous Game, starring the father from the Brady Bunch! Yeow! And Lifeboat is a Hitchcock film I just love. But then, I love Alligator People too, and so will you: Chaney is a hoot in that one. And watch what the leading lady does with the crate marked DANGER! RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS!

I ended up getting The Snake Pit yesterday, plus a box of stuff from VCI to review.

The Best Buy ad in yesterday's paper had The Universal Set at $17.99.

Does that kill you? The set is a Best Buy exclusive that they claim has an SRP of $24.99, that they sell for $19.99, and that they offer on sale for $17.99. And it's exclusive to Best Buy! What, we're going to pay more for it somewhere else? What screwy marketing.

Maybe they're afraid of bad sales... I mean, who's heard of those movies except some die-hard horror fans....c'mon.
