Picked up The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer The Power Cosmic Edition. Seven bucks for that second disc of extras is quite a bit. Plus the DVD case for this case has a picture of The Silver Surfer, no Fantastic Four and no title. Still I guess it was worth it since I did indeed spring for the 2 disc version. |

I picked up the Universal set, and since we're on the topic of music, I bought the deluxe edition of Counting Crows' classic, August and Everything After. |

Stranger than fiction...Went by one of the local Best Buys to purchase the Universal set, finding out that someone in upper management after a long Cocaine bender decided to switch sections around to opposite ends of the earth (Games, DVD's and music) after finding the DVD section, saw that The Universal set was no where to be found.....true to form the response I got from one of the little blue shirted minions was that they are probably lost because of the "big move" Ya gotta love it...... So in a fit of anger and frustration I picked up the New "Night of the Living Dead 3D" with Sid Haig (okay it seems silly but they do throw in four pairs of 3D glasses) |

Talk about frustration... Read on... First of all, a trip to Fry's netted me a bunch o'them cowboy pitchers, led by John Wayne in True Grit, Rio Lobo, and El Dorado (one set) and The Telegraph Trail, Somewhere in Sonora, and The Man from Monterey (t'other set), plus stand-alone The Man who Shot Liberty Valance and The War Wagon. Also, a cheap serial, the 1934 version of The Perils of Pauline. So, in the mail, I got the two discs I ordered from Bestbuy.com, which are that Felix the Cat collection I mentioned previously and the Stax/Volt Live in Norway Concert, which is in fact NOT the Stax/Volt disc. Those dunderheads sent me instead (are you ready for this?) a pan&scan version of FALLING DOWN with Michael Douglas. Yes, just about the LAST thing I would ever order (except for that colorized crap)! So I call them, and am put on the phone for 8 1/2 minutes on hold by their "customer service" department, interrupted every few minutes by a voice telling me how IMPORTANT MY CALL IS TO THEM! I tell you.... |

Oh, yeah, I almost forgotted: the Rooney & Garland set arrived, too. Very nice! Includes Babes in Arms, Strike up the Band, Babes on Broadway, Girl Crazy, a bonus DVD crammed with features, not least of all a couple of dozen of Miss Garland's performances in various movies, vintage short subjects, 20 behind-the-scenes photos, and a collector's booklet with promo materials and background on each film. If I have a complaint, it's that there's no "free posters" offer with this one. So, when are the Andy Hardy pictures comin', eh? |

I remembering ordering a Region 2 copy of Broken Arrow (1950), the Jimmy Stewart Western, from somewhere across the pond before it became available over here. To my revulsion, they mistakenly sent me the 1996 Broken Arrow with John Travolta and Christian Slater. (shudders) But the weirdest one of all was when I ordered the second set of Laurel & Hardy Fox films, and having it arrive...only to discover the second season of Reba inside. |

I've been pretty lucky with this stuff. One of the Laurel & Hardy DVDs from Germany didn't arrive; the DVD box was empty. They sent me another, promptly. I got the Clark Gable Warners boxed set, and the first film I wanted to see was Dancing Lady, which wasn't in the box... Instead, one of the DVDs (packaging and all) from one of the Bette Davis Collections was in there. |

Noticed a $3.98 bargain bin at Wal-Mart right next to the $5.50 bargain bin. It included a copy of the remake of Yours, Mine, and Ours. As a remake it butchers the wonderful Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda original. But if you judge it as a different film instead of comparing it to the original it is fairly funny. Oh and I forgot to mention that I recently received Volume 2 of King of the Mounties from The Serial Squadron. |

Compared to last week's haul, this week looks more like the purchases of someone given to DVD moderation. Still, it's not without its highlights. Got an e-mail from Kino.com announcing items in some sort of anniversary sale, so I checked them out and found a few silents I've been wanting for some time now: Faust, Waxworks, The Man Who Laughs and Queen Kelly. (I should state, however, that I did not buy them from Kino--I found them much cheaper at DVD Pacific. The Waxworks DVD was $12.50.) In another Balcony thread, mort bakaprevski was asking about a source for the Crime Club series, and the B-Man pointed him to a website that could help him. I visited the same site, and while most of what he had I've already purchased from my pal down under (Trev), I did find a double feature of Ghost Crazy (a.k.a. Crazy Nights) with Shemp and Billy Gilbert and Olsen and Johnson's Ghost Catchers that soon found a home at Rancho Yesteryear. Finally, some random surfing netted me a Buy 3, Get 1 Free coupon at Nostalgia Family Video, where I was surprised to find goodies like Buck Benny Rides Again, Christmas Holiday (Siodmak!), the 1951 version of Death of a Salesman and If I Had a Million on DVD and, in the case of Benny, in very impressive print quality (I haven't watched the others yet). I'm not sure how they get around the copyright thing, but then as Gravy says, that's their worry--not mine. |
