Buck Benny rides again used to air on the old AMC back in the 1980's.........As far as getting around the Copyright issue they are just flying under the radar, that's all. nothing more nothing less.. Very few companies either have the manpower or want to spend the legal dollars finding all the "dealers" that are selling older films that they are not even circulating themselves... They are more concerned with getting the guys filming new releases in the theatre or in rare instances when a film has been released oveseas (new films mind you) on DVD (perfect example Shaun of the Dead) which was on DVD before even it's US theatre debut. and then again they just targeted conventions and shows However on other hand Disney has always took a very strong stance with copying their product and have literally gone to coventions (on the east coast at least) and shut dealers down made them take their product off the table....If you comply ok however if you tried it a second time they do not hesitate to go after the person. Movies Unlimited is a widly respected video distributor why even TCM ties in with them.....Yet they have been selling a copy of Abbott and Costello's It aint Hay for years.....and if anyone would like to release it it most certainly be Universal Studios who has taken full advantage of that catalog... but as you said "It's their problem" I'm actually glad the collectors market has been as large as it has been, it's afforded many film buffs things to share and enjoy as opposed to reading about them as a footnote in a Film History book. Now that I am off my Soapbox picked up a copy of the Steven King anthology "Nighmares and Dreamscapes" used for only $5.99 and that's all that's happening in the way of the world |

I think the story re: It Ain't Hay is a bit more complicated. If Universal did own the rights, it would already be on one of their "Franchise" collections. As it was told to me, the Damon Runyon estate claims they own the picture, which is why it's in the "limbo" it's in. |

Today I picked up the Universal Horror set at the Murfreesboro Best Buy. Unlike the Sci-Fi Vol. 2 set, this set was on the New Releases rack (of course, I went to the Horror section first). My wife and I left and headed to the mall, where she had some make-up on order. Whenever we go to the mall, my wife wants to go to Hot Topic, a store that caters to the Gothic minded. I like to go and check out the new music, sometimes buying "various new artists" CDs, which are usually cheap and gives me the chance to check out new artists. The store pipes music of metal and sometimes late 70s or early 80s bands like The Ramones or Dead Kennedys. Well today was a weird day because Queen's RADIO GA GA was playing followed by The Who's SQEEZE BOX. Damn weird indeed! The CD area is small and is next to an even smaller DVD area. The DVD area is lucky to hold 150 and they're always music related. Today the box of FRANKENSTEIN caught my eye so I skipped the CDs and went thru the DVDs. I bought Whale's THE OLD DARK HOUSE, Browning's FREAKS and a movie by some cat named Jim Hill titled SPIDER BABY with Chaney Jr and Sid Haig. All of the discs have extras. I don't think I've ever told anyone this before but I must confess - I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!! REALLY, I DO!!! The only movie I didn't purchase was THE THING FAP with Jim Arness. |

I forgot to mention 11 copies of the Sci-Fi Vol 2 were still on the shelves today. |

I can't remember specifics, but I believe Nostalgia Family Video have gotten burned before, and they're pretty daring with some of their releases. Are they still selling Bullwinkle? |

You're gonna love Spider Baby! Today, I got a two-pack of the two Fantastic Four movies, plus a Grindhouse double feature of Pick-Up and The Teacher, plus the first season of the animated Justice League Unlimited ($35, marked down to $14), plus four vintage British crime thrillers from overseas. A good day! Oh, and a package arrived from igsjr... Thanks, pally! |

Oh, yeah, and in my quest to complete my set of 41 numbered Fox Studio Classics, I picked up The Song of Bernadette, Anastasia, and The Three Faces of Eve, too. |

I hope so. I could only afford 3 films at $19.99 a piece and put THE THING aside for it. The Whale and Browning films were must buys. |

Do dvd's recorded off tv into the permanent collection count? If so, from TCM (about the only channel worth recording from) this week: Return of the Vampire 1943 My Son the Vampire (orig: Mother Riley Meets the Vampire) a British comedy with Arthur Lucan playing old Mother Riley, hijinking with Bela Lugosi, who, in real life was apparently trying to earn enough money to pay for his passage back to the States). Never seen this one before. The Vampire Bat 1933 Lone Wolf Keeps a Date 1941, another in the detective series with Warren William And, if everything went right from last night Swing Shift Maisie with Ann Sothern to add to my other Maisies. She's really great in this series, and really, quite a dish, especially in Congo Maisie. |
