"Sloooowly I turn..." Well, it’s Saturday again…and time to account for all the money spent this past week on my addictive DVD hobby. It’s been kind of fallow, TV-on-DVD wise, because most of the TV stuff that’s been released in the past couple of weeks hasn’t been the classic baby boomer stuff I’m usually interested in. I did manage to purchase—from across the pond—the seventh and final series of long-running Britcom My Family, and Deep Discount.com had The Best of Ernie Kovacs: Collector’s Edition marked down to $10.98. Efilmic.com has a handful of movies still not available on DVD over here in the good ol’ USA, and I was extremely fortunate that the three I wanted were on sale one right after the other…bam bam bam! The only one that’s arrived at Rancho Yesteryear so far, though, is The Search (1948). I also picked up the Fox Horror Classics set (with The Lodger, Hangover Square and The Undying Monster) and though I’ve only seen Square I’m looking forward to the other two. I’ve finally gotten around to reading from the very beginning Kevin Brownlow’s The Parade’s Gone By (a book I’ve had for a few years now but one in which I've just cherry-picked chapters to read), and I was intrigued by a film he mentions in the chapter on director Henry King, The Winning of Barbara Worth—one of Gary Cooper’s earliest film roles. I remembered reading that the movie had been released as part of a new Cooper box set, and I really wanted to see it but didn’t want to pony up the scratch for the entire Coop collection. So I sauntered over to eBay, wondering if I could find it being sold separately (I did the same thing with a couple of films I sold from the Warners’ John Ford set, Mary of Scotland and Sergeant Rutledge) and sure enough, it was—so I bought it now. (The same seller was also selling a copy of Harper from a Paul Newman set, so I snapped that up, too.) I also bought a copy of Tess of the Storm Country from Half.com. I found this website mentioned in a Usenet post, VintageFilmBuff.com, and naturally made the mistake of perusing it. You can pretty much guess what happened next—I now own copies of Mr. Wu (starring Lon Chaney), and four double features: Blood Money/Pleasure Cruise, Guilty as Hell/The Great Hotel Murder (sounds like my last job), Hollywood Boulevard/The Preview Murder Mystery, and The Glass Key (the 1935 version)/City Streets. But the big haul this week came from my Down Under pal Trev (who In the Balcony is Lamont Cranston, wealthy young man about town): I purchased the Boston Blackie series (all fourteen movies with Chester Morris, plus a Morris B-pic Smashing the Rackets and some Blackie radio shows), the Crime Doctor series (the ten movies starring Warner Baxter), the Henry Aldrich series (the two Jackie Cooper entries plus the Jimmy Lydon vehicles), the Lone Wolf series (all nine of the Warren William-Eric Blore films plus Melvyn Douglas’ 1935 The Lone Wolf Returns) and the Whistler series (eight of those). I now no longer have an excuse to whine about that there’s nothing good on television. |

Just got back from Sam's Club with a copy of "The Naked Spur" with James Stewart. It also contains a Tex Avery cartoon and a Pete Smith short. Sam's Club also has a lot of Universal horror packages at $17.88 each. I purchased "The Bela Lugosi Collection" which features the four Lugosi/Karloff films along with "Murders in the Rue Morgue"...plus...the "Inner Sanctum" package of Lon Chaney, Jr. flicks. Sam's also had "The Boris Karloff Collection" and the "Hammer Horror Collection" as well as the seperate Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolf Man collections...all for $17.88 each. |

Just scored HELLZAPOPPIN', HOPPITY GOES TO TOWN, ARTISTS AND MODELS ABROAD, and (drum roll) CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY from Nostalgia Family Video. I am a happy little feller, even with a broken rib and a bad cough (not the ideal combo). |

Rog, Thanks for mentioning this set. It was announced so long ago, I totally forgot about it. I picked it up today, and there is some priceless music on this set. However, I really wish they had provided complete shows rather than a "best of" of the musical numbers. At least the performances are unedited. --Ignatz |

I was nearly certain I was done receiving DVDs this week. But I was pleasantly surprised to receive my Amazon.com order of Roots the Next Generations. |

I was trolling ebay and bought a couple of silents for about the cost of shipping. Both have been around a while: Lois Weber's The Blot, which I've never seen, and the 1921 French movie La Terre, a stark adaptation of the Zola novel that must have had audiences jumping off the Eiffel Tower en masse. Also got around to buying Harry Langdon: The Forgotten Clown, a nice single-disc collection of his three funny/bizarre silent features. Picked up the Fox Horror Classics set, which I haven't dipped into yet, and the Universal Horror Classic Movie Archive, which I have. I too got the Image Hunchback this week and have enjoyed watching it again. The 3-D pics weren't 3-D on my set either. |

That sounds painful. I wouldn't know from experience though. My advice to you is the same advice given to Flounder from Bluto in ANIMAL HOUSE, after Flounder's brother's Lincoln is sorta dinged up."If I were you, I'd start drinkin' heavily!" |

Today I received the following, all in glorious black & white... Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Season Two Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Season Three Wanted: Dead or Alive, Season Three The thirs season of Wanted: Dead or Alive is the final season. I picked an episode to watch because I noticed Mary Tyler Moore was in it. It wasn't a big part (she was only in one scene) but it was nice seeing her as someone other than Laura Petrie or Mary Richards... |

The big arrivals for me this week were the three Stax-related disks. There is the "Respect Yourself" documentary about the label's history, the concert captured for Norwegian TV in 1967, and a series of Otis Redding performances from various TV appearances. The documentary is more interesting for hearing and seeing some of those involved in the label's history but it paints a somewhat rosier picture than I think the reality was. Read Peter Guralnick's "Sweet Soul Music" if you want the whole story. The concert tape, despite being black & white and having poor contrast, is amazing. Some of it has been floating around for years but for this they have turned up about 20 minutes more of footage and cleaned up the sound. If you love this kind of music, you have to get this. Sam & Dave are especially spectacular though the notes insist that Otis Redding tops them. As much as I love Redding, I don't think he does. There are also commentary tracks with Steve Cropper and others who were there. I haven't watched the Redding disc yet. Also got Alfred Hitchcock Presents, 3rd Season. |

Got the Jolson Jazz Singer megaset from Warners, plus Planet Terror, the original Halloween (I've never seen, believe it or not, and was cheap), and for Kid Gravy, Transformers. Oh, yeah, and some cheap grindhouse double disc with The Hellcats and some chicks-in-chains movie. |

In it's day, Halloween was a standout horror film. One of Carpenter's best. It influenced a generation, but unfortunately, it influenced them to make an endless stream of inferior imitations. A recommended Halloween film. Another fine Halloween film is Nightmare Before Christmas which Disney is re-releasing to theaters in 3D for the holiday. An animated horror-musical-comedy by Tim Burton. |

Another Saturday, another week of DVD purchases. Kind of light this week--I think I have more stuff on pre-order than what came to the house. Purchased the restored version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and, since I didn't have it previously, The Phantom of the Opera (1925). My copy of the dreaded PD The Cecil B. DeMille Collection arrived this week as well. TV-wise, I have several things on pre-order but the only discs that made it to Rancho Yesteryear were Mill Creek Entertainment's The Best of Jack Benny and The Best of TV Westerns, Volume 2. |
