Arrivals at the House of Yesteryear this week: The Joe E, Brown Comedy Collector's Set, containing the Brown vehicles Earthworm Tractors (1936), The Gladiator (1938), Wide Open Faces (1938) and Flirting with Fate (1938). I've not seen any of these--the only Brown comedies I've watched are the early Warner Brothers films like Elmer the Great (1933) and Alibi Ike (1935) (and of course, Some Like It Hot [1959]--"Zowie!"). Took me years to realize, by the way, that Daws Butler based his Peter Potamus characterization on Joe E. Steptoe and Son: The Christmas Specials and Dad's Army: BBC Christmas Specials, two Region 2 collections spotlighting Yuletide-themed episodes from two of the Beeb's best-known and popular sitcoms. And finally, Larry Harmon's Bozo, the World's Most Famous Clown: Collection 2. "Just remember what Bozo always says, kids--keep laughin'!" |

I received The Doris Day Show: Season 5 yesterday. It was the final season of the series and I note Doris herself did some commentaries this time though I don't know yet in how many episodes. After this, I am not sure what is scheduled to arrive next or when... |

Santa came early and looked like the mailman; he brought me the new Criterion The Lady Vanishes (and the Showcase Sgt. Rock). I also received a used but perfectly good copy of George Harrison: The Dark Horse Years DVD. |

Santa must have been doing a test run over my cave because a copy of Mystery Science Theater 3000's Essentials dvd fell out of the sled. Now I can look forward to a holiday viewing of one of my favorites - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. |

Tiger, Do the Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVDs include the ability to watch the films without the MST3K treatment? I was never a MST3K fan. But there are some of the films I'd like to have including Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. |

Yep, Inspector, that's the one. Very young Pia at that. Marlin, I'll take a look tonight, but I don't think the movies are offered without the commentary. The MST3K version of "Manos, Hands of Fate" with Torgo is also included on a seperate disc. |

I've hear/read several times over the years that this is considered the worst horror movie (maybe movie, period) ever made. I would love a first hand account of the film, BT, if and when you decide to place your fate in the hands of Manos. |

It is terrible; very untalented people with zero money made it. I dunno about the worst ever; it's too unprofessional to hardly compete on any level with several other movies -- seems unfair. It's strictly amateurville. |

I attended a Christmas Bazaar on Black Friday. The DVD sale bins there yielded The Billy Wilder Collection, with Stalag 17, Sunset Blvd., & Sabrina, A Mystery box set which includes Eyes in the Night ('42), The Kennel Murder Case ('33), The Limping Man ('53), The Spy in White ('36) Dick Tracy Detective ('46), Doomed to Die ('40), Mystery Liner ('34), Shock ('46), Dishonored Lady ('47) Nancy Drew Reporter ('39) The Black Raven ('43), and City of Missing Girls ('41) along with Sherlock Holmes mysteries Murder at the Baskervilles ('41), Sign of Four ('32), Man who Disappeared ('51), Greystone Inscription ('55), Winthrop Legend ('54), Harry Crocker ('54), the Imposter Mystery ('55) and the Jolly Hangman ('55), all for $5. A second $5 investment brought me two western box sets, the first featuring Roy Rogers' Bad Man of Deadwood, Sunset Seranade, The Lights of Old Santa Fe, Sheriff of Tombstone, and Home in Oklahoma. Also on this set were two Buster Crabbes, Stagecoach Outlaws and Fuzzy Settles Down and Tex Ritter's Arizona Days. The second western set included Roy Rogers' The Gay Ranchero, The Far Frontier, Days of Jesse James, Southward Ho and Sunset on the Desert. The set also has Johnny Mack Brown in Desert Phantom, Tim Mcoy's Ghost Patrol and The Three Mesqueteers' Riders of the Whistling Skull. Hopefully these will all be viewable and there will be a nugget or two among them. They're all from Platinum, who I know nothing about, except for the Wilders (Paramount) and the Wilders alone are easily worth the $10 I spent. I was somewhat disconcerted to find the Sony Batmans and Warner Superman also in the 2 for $5 bin. Too bad I already had 'em. Look out, VCI, here I come! |

Thanks, LG, that's pretty much what I expected. I can't bring myself to wasting the time to find out. |

Marlin, took a look at the MST3K dvds and indeed the original features without the MST3K treatment are not available here. Alpha has Manos and I know someone put out the unabridged Santa Claus Conquers the Martians as well. Try Amazon, Movies Unlimited or even Google. |

Thanks for the info Tiger. I'd already found Santa Claus Conquers the Martians on DeepDiscount.com. At times it seems like all I have to do is purchase a DVD and they will release a better version or include the movie as part of a larger set. Thankfully today is an exception. I had considered several times getting the original The Fly/Return of the Fly double feature but for one reason or another never did. Just received The Fly Collection which includes The Fly, Return of the Fly, Curse of the Fly, and a fourth disc of extras. |
