Big surprise today.
Reading the dvd reviews in today's Times I discovered that the restored, original 126 minute version of THE PASSENGER had finally come out on dvd.
Always one of my favorites. I don't know if it qualifies, but I consider it noir -or at least neo-noir.
I was carrying on to Mrs Mantan how I had to order it immediately when she presented me with a copy she'd pre-ordered last week for $16.95 - price is still good at Amazon.
SRP of $24.95.

My DVDs seem to be arriving one at a time this week. So far I've received Judge Roy Bean (the TV series with Edgar Buchanan) on Monday, the latest collection of The Rifleman on Tuesday and today I received my latest serial, Manhunt of Mystery Island. I know I have one TV item coming by itself that could arrive tomorrow but I do have a package of a half-dozen titles coming from Oldies DVD soon...

Since you asked, LG, I do have a couple of new releases that the folks around here might be interested in. As far as I know, you have not mentioned these at all.

I only heard about them from IMDB, when I perused their New Releases on DVD list for this week.

Both titles are from an outfit called Retromedia. Here is the low-down, courtesy of IMDB (and the great copy-and-paste editing tool):

Creepy Cowboys: Four Weird Westerns

Four B westerns, with a dash of horror movie mood, on a single 2-sided disc.

Tombstone Canyon (1932) - stars Ken Maynard battling the mysterious and disfigured Phantom

Rawhide Terror (1934) - originally planned as a 10-chapter serial but cut down to under an hour, stars William Desmond, William Barrymore and Frances Morris in a tale of vigilante and a treasure map. Written and produced by Victore "Denver Dixon" Adamson, father of cult director Al Adamson.

Vanishing Riders (1935) - stars Bill Cody and Bill Cody Jr. as a father and son team of sheriffs who don ghost make-up and skeleton suits to take on a gang of outlaws

Wild Horse Phantom (1944) - stars Buster Crabbe, Al 'Fuzzy' St. John and the Devil Bat from the Bela Lugosi horror in the poverty row western spook show

Forgotten Terrors

Four bargain basement horrors on a single 2-sided disc.

Guinn "Big Boy" Williams stars in The Phantom (1931)

Monte Blue and Lila Lee are stalked on a passenger liner in The Intruder (1933)

Doris Hill and Sidney Bracey are airline passengers who take refuge in an old dark house in Tangled Destinies (1932),

George Zucco plays identical twins -- one good, one evil -- in Dead Men Walk (1943), co-staring Dwight Frye.

Posted Image Posted Image

Details (for both releases):

Black and White, Retromedia/Image, Academy Ratio, 1.33:1. Audio: English (Dolby Digital 1.0). Optional subtitles.

I have watched TANGLED DESTINIES and TOMBSTONE CANYON, so far, and have not been disappointed. TD, a PRC release, is a little rough, faces are not well defined, but acceptable. The sound is fine, considering the age. TC is better, really good in fact; with clear, crisp picture and clear (hiss-free) sound.

I found both features highly enjoyable, and I look forward to watching the rest. I paid $20 per set, but I am sure they can be found at a lower price. I look forward to more releases in this vein.

While grocery shopping at Wal-mart today made an impulse purchase of a pair of John Wayne double features from Warner Bros. Home Video, Tall in the Saddle/The Train Robbers and Blood Alley/The Sea Chase.

Retromedia's work is sometimes excellent and sometimes iffy (and sometimes both on the two sides of the disc) so I withheld mentioning them 'til I'd seen 'em, but what th' heck. They did for example the "Roger Corman Puerto Rican Trilogy" which featured a terrific letterboxed Last Woman on Earth.

Fair enough, LG. I had not heard of this company, prior to these releases, but so far I am satisfied with the quality of the movies. I watched THE PHANTOM (1931) tonite, and the picture was almost perfect. The sound had to be cranked up a little, but it was clear and there was no hiss.

I hope they put out some more releases with these types of movies.

Among the other Retromedia releases that would interest most Balconeers are

White Huntress / Jungle Siren (reviewed here In The Balcony)
The Mad Monster / Black Raven (ditto)
Phantoms of Death Triple Feature (Phantom of Chinatown/Phantom Killer/Phantom of 42nd St.)
Poverty Row Theater Collection (Detective Kitty O'Day/Private Snuffy Smith/Club Paradise)

And I finally got a chance to look at what arrived this week... the MGM Musicals collection (the one with Three Little Words and 4 or 5 others) and the deluxe edition of one of my faves, Guys and Dolls.

This week, I am picking up Fox's Classic Crime Collection: Street Justice (includes Murder Inc., The French Connection, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and The Seven-Ups). That's it.

I took advantage of the big sale at deepdiscountdvd.com to purchase the following titles for $5.98 each, with free shipping:

Angels over Broadway (1940)
Down to Earth (1947)
It Should Happen to You (1954)
Matinee Idol (1928)/ Frank Capra & the American Dream
The Marrying Kind (1952)
The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956)

I will be picking up Fox's Crime Collection, as well. Also would like to get Deadwood: Season 2, M*A*S*H Season 10, and possibly the DeMille set. Just have to see how this week's lottery tickets pan out first.

Bats,

It's good to see another fan of DEADWOOD here. In my opinion, it's the best show currently on television (perhaps best ever). For those of you that have not given the show a try, I'd highly recommend it, even if you don't like Westerns. For me, it seems less like a Western and more like a mix of CHINATOWN (in plotting) and Shakespeare (in language and presentation). It's not often you see a character really soliliquize on television, but it happens quite often on DEADWOOD.

Iggy,

I am in total agreement with you, definitely the best Western TV show, and one of the Top Ten one-hour dramas of all time. IMHO.

Thought I'd posted these titles when I ordered them, but apparently not. Just received Tim Tyler's Luck and the 1930 Howard Hughes' film Hells Angels.

Getting Hell's Angels reminds me that with the new boxed sets coming out a Jean Harlow collection is sorely needed. If nothing else they could issue a Clark Gable/Jean Harlow collection.
