I went a little serial-crazy, this week, and now have 18 titles coming my way, via Restored Serials and VCI. |

Huge day yesterday; got 10 more obscure vintage British films (comedies and war films) from England, early appearances by James Mason, Terry-Thomas, Janette Scott, and a whole bunch of music hall and film performers beloved over there, unknown over here. Tremors Attack Pack: With the cult monster hit Tremors and four sequels. Road to Perdition ($5.99 at Best Buy) The Sarah Silverman Program, Season 1 (Never saw it, but I find her profane and hilarious) A trio of 3 4-movie Western sets from VCI (found in a local record store, believe it or not): Buster Crabbe, Bob Baker, and Bob Steel collections. Midnight Movies II Collection, with four more Ray Dennis Steckler films, Body Fever, The Las Vegas Serial Killer, The Hollywood Strangler meets the Skid Row Slasher, and Blood Shack. And -- FINALLY! -- the new G-Man vs. the Black Dragon 2-disc set has arrived from Cheezy Flicks. Review to follow shortly. |

With several mentions of Big Lots I decided to check the local store. Not much to choose from but I did manage to get I Married a Monster From Outer Space. |

Christmas shopping today, and got a bunch of cheap DVDs for me, too, including The Right Stuff, Memento, Taxi Driver, and Apocalypse Now, all 2-disc sets, each brand new at Best Buy for $8.99. A "2 for $20" sale netted me Gene Tierney and Preston Foster in William Wellman's Thunderbirds, and another Justice League cartoon set. |

Watched the first show on the Love American Style set. Really fun bit o'history. The blackout sketches are funny (albeit a bit corny) and the stories short and enjoyable. Lots of old character actors, some new soon-to-be famous faces and some new never-were actors. The format was three different short stories and some blackout sketches per hour episode. Tales of romance with comedy and occasionally some drama thrown in. The first story deals with a guy about to propose to his fiancee (yummy Yvyonne Craig of Batgirl fame) when his first wife shows up to turn the evening upside down. The second story of the first episode dealt with a pool hustler and starred Flip Wilson, Mantan Moreland and Eddie Rochester Anderson. Great seeing these three working together here. The third has parents Robert Cummings and Jane Wyatt coming to grips with their little girl's approaching adulthood and debating whether or not to secretly slip her a mashed up birth control pill in her orange juice to keep her safe. Did parents really think about doing things like this back in '69? The music was emmy award winning and in this season was sung by the Cowsills. The new version that appeared in the second season until the end was a bit zippier and I thought more fun. Fun blast from the past! |

I've been given one directive from my wife for this upcoming Tuesday--"Buy Superbad." It's a happy chore, because I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I'll likely purchase Pirates of the Caribbean 3 after the Christmas shopping is out of the way. I also need to pick up a copy of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World for my nephew. It's one of his favorites. |

Used my 40% off coupon (and a $5 Borders bucks card) to pick up the brand new four-film Criterion Bergman set with Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, and The Virgin Spring. |

My order from Restored Serials arrived at the Batcave, consisting of THE SHADOW, BLACKHAWK, DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE and THE SPIDER'S WEB. Also, a trip to the DVD specialty store netted DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS (BBC mini-series), Boris Karloff - 15 Frightful Films, DEATHLESS DEVIL/TARKAN VS THE VIKINGS double feature, Looney Tunes Vol. 5, the new LADY VANISHES 2-disc from Criterion and NOSFERATU - Ultimate DVD Edition from Kino. This edition reportedly has the most complete and remastered version of NOSFERATU that has been available. Hopefully that is true. |

Sure thing, Inspector. I, too, have that Image version and was happy with it. But I had read that this was the most complete, remastered version available; and it uses the original score, so I took the chance. I hope to watch it this weekend and will report back at once. Below is the write-up on the release, from Kino's website,: NOSFERATU THE ULTIMATE DVD EDITION A cornerstone of the horror film, F.W. Murnau's NOSFERATU is triumphantly reborn in this breathtaking new restoration by the F.W. Murnau Foundation. Backed by an orchestral performance of Hans Erdmann's 1922 score (recorded in 5.1 stereo surround), this Kino International edition is derived from a new high-definition transfer of Murnau's masterpiece, with unprecedented visual clarity and historical faithfulness to the original release version. This double-disc collection presents the film with the original German intertitles as well as with newly-translated Englishintertitles. Accompanying the film is a 52-minute documentary by Luciano Berriatúa which provides a detailed account of the production and explores the filmmakers' involvement in the occult. NOSFERATU: A Symphony of Horror Germany 1922 94 Min. Color Tinted 1.33:1 Directed by F.W. Murnau Photographed by Fritz Arno Wagner Screenplay: Henrik Galeen Art Direction: Albin Grau With Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, Alexander Granach, Greta Schroeder Restored by Luciano Berriatúa Reconstruction of Hans Erdmann's original 1921 score by Berndt Heller Performed by the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Berndt Heller Sound Recording: Saarländischer Rundfunk, Saarbrücken Critical Acclaim "AN AMAZINGLY VIBRANT RESTORATION" - Richard Brody THE NEW YORKER THE VAMPIRE STRIKES BACK: Grade: A A gloriously restored version of the 85-year-old masterwork Nosferatu chills to the bone "Over the years I've watched a half-dozen versions of F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu in theaters and on VHS, laserdisc, and DVD. Sad to say, they've looked uniformly crummy, even those touted as "restored." The available prints of Murnau's '20s horror masterpiece show their age with scratches, jerky cuts, and annoying flickering frames. But Kino's glorious new restoration eliminates all those distractions -” a three-minute featurette explains how - allowing us to see this silent granddaddy of all vampire movies as if for the first time. Quite simply, it's miraculous. The clarity and stability of the image unleash the director's precise framing, painterly lighting, and adroit editing, which delicately links characters to one another as the vampire casts his hideous spells. The lack of visual clutter also enhances the performances, particularly Max Schreck's Orlok; always the creepiest of vampire turns, his clawed otherworldliness is now truly horrific. Bravo also for this edition's re-creation of composer Hans Erdmann's lush orchestral score. In addition to a version with German intertitles, the two-disc set includes a lengthy doc about Nosferatu's creation. It's fine, but what really counts is the splendid, long-overdue face-lift of a sagging classic." - Tim Purtell, Entertainment Weekly "This is an excellent film, one of the all-time classics of silent cinema. This new restoration improves on the earlier release, which didn't look bad at all. With the new documentary about Murnau and the improved image, this disc is worth getting even if you have the earlier disc that Kino put out. Highly Recommended." - John Sinnott, DVD Talk "This is very definitely the best release we've had thus far on this title. You have a 5.1 stereo surround recording of the original score created for this in 1922. The transfer is stunning. Theres a near hour long documentary about the making of the film and how the filmmakers dabbled in the occult...This is a fantastic set. It should be bought for the transfer on NOSFERATU....It's great!" - Harry Knowles, Aintitcool News DVD Extras View the film with newly-translated English intertitles or the original German intertitles (with optional English subtitles) Hans Erdmann's original 1922 score, available in 5.1 Stereo Surround or 2.0 Stereo The Language of Shadows, a 52-minute making-of documentary Nosferatu: An Historic Film Meets Digital Restoration, a 3-minute documentary Lengthy excerpts from other films by F.W. Murnau: Journey Into the Night (1920), The Haunted Castle (1921), Phantom (1922), The Finances of the Grand Duke (1924), The Last Laugh (1924), Tartuffe (1925), Faust (1926), and Tabu (1931) Photo Gallery Scene Comparison |

Bats, based on your recommendation, I decided to purchase this as a Christmas present, but the Kino website calls it a HD transfer, although they don't refer to it as a HD DVD. My intended recipient doesn't have a HD TV. Is it a HD DVD or will he be able to view it on his non HD set? |

Columbia House is having a "Deal of the Day" promotion this month, offering select DVDs for $6.98 and free s&h (they change the offering each day). Since I hadn't seen The Departed yet, I went ahead and took a flutter. The only other DVD set to arrive at Rancho Yesteryear this week was a Region 2 collection of the first season of the 1950s private-eye classic Peter Gunn. |
