Chandu: To answer your question to bats, yes, HD transfers can be viewed on regular DVD players. Smiles of a Summer Night, the new upgrade from Criterion, is a HD transfer, for example, and I just watched it on a regular ol' DVD player and it looked fantastic.

Thanks for the second time in the last two minutes! I tried to contact Kino via email and telephone too, and was unsuccessful. :( But then I ain't got a lot o' patience with automated answerin' systems. I ain't no masochist ya know! :P

NOSFERATU - Ultimate DVD Edition from Kino.  This edition reportedly has the most complete and remastered version of NOSFERATU that has been available.  Hopefully that is true.

Bats, based on your recommendation, I decided to purchase this as a Christmas present, but the Kino website calls it a HD transfer, although they don't refer to it as a HD DVD. My intended recipient doesn't have a HD TV. Is it a HD DVD or will he be able to view it on his non HD set?

Chandy, ol' LG is right, your friend will have no problems. But the weird thing is, I had no idea the release was HD, nor does the packaging indicate anything about HD. Perhaps in the literature inside, but I haven't opened it yet...

Bats, thanks for the response. I went ahead and ordered it based on Gravy's say-so. The HD transfer note is in fine print at the Kino website. It's about the only thing you missed transcribing in your post a page back.

I picked up the Bob Hope Collection today at Target ... I love "Alias Jesse James", "The Princess and the Pirate" and "They Got Me Covered". I also enjoy "The Road to Hong Kong". It's not primo Bing and Bob but it was one of the few movies my Grandfather took me to. He wasn't much of a moviegoer but always enjoyed Hope's film and TV work. My wife likes "The Facts of Life" with Lucille Ball which didn't impress me the last time I watched it but I'll try it again. The final 2 titles in this set are "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" with Phyllis Diller and "I'll Take Sweden" with Tuesday Weld. I've heard nothing good about either of these.

I found a couple of cheap used DVDs... A Star is Born, the Judy Garland version, which Mr. Panzer highly recommended to me long ago, and something called So Ends Our Night, with Fredric March.

I couldn't decide whether or not to pick up that Bob Hope set, 'cause the only films in it I know are absolutely lousy. Can I get a second or third opinion here?

I considered buying this set, because I don't have Alias Jesse James (it's amusing but not tip-top Hope; still, the cameos at the end redeem the picture) but since that's the only reason why I'd want it I'm going to take a pass for now. (Maybe when somebody offers it on sale.) The Princess and the Pirate is the best Hope film on the set, followed by Hong Kong...They Got Me Covered has its moments but the WW2 material dates it a bit. (Although there is a funny music box gag worth watching the movie for...)

I bought So Ends Our Night recently (before the VCI sale, dagnabit) but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Today, I went to Best Buy to get some presents (one of which I found, one I did not) and the three Disney Treasures tins. Oddly, I found plenty of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which I thought might be the hardest to find; only a couple of The Chronological Donald, Vol. 3, left; and no Disneyland volumes left whatsoever.

A little clarification that might help you guys re HD mastering.

There is a distinction between a high-definition mastered DVD and a high-definition DVD (which means either of the two competitive formats: HD-DVD or Blu-Ray). An HD-mastered disc just means that the movie was converted in the transfer from film to video in high definition. This usually means that the master is in as high a quality on video as you can currently get. This HD mastering may even be up to four times the resolution of high definition television. There are multiple high definition mastering choices that can be made.

The HD master can then be used to master a standard DVD (which is what is on that Kino disc) but is not at full high definition resolution. There is still an advantage of starting from a higher quality transfer and then reducing its resolution to that of standard DVD quality. Another obvious advantage for the DVD companies is that they also have a master copy that can be released at a later date in a full high definition quality version. If the disc was a high-definition disc you wouldn't be able to play it on a standard DVD player.

Yeah, I don't unnerstan it either... All I know is something "mastered in high definition" looks damn good on my TV set. It's not just pomp, as "digitally remastered" is (you'll find "digitally remastered" on cheap Alpha-type discs!).

Well technically anything that is taken from an analog source (VHS) and turned into a DVD (or Digital video tape) has been turned into a digital format..Digitally remastered is a really a term that has been thrown around rather loosely since the advent of DVD recording. but even a digital TV source when recorded to a DVD is still just a digital recording. As we all know many DVD's out there like to boast of Digitally Remastered....but that gap is wide and deep....Alpha is not Digitally remastering anything. they are just dumping product onto disc...as crazy as it is the Serial Squadron's restored serials with tweaks here and there are far more digitally remastered than many companies putting out product.
