The latest (sixth) annual installment of Retour de Flamme ("Rescued from the Flames") DVD has arrived from Europe. Highlights this year include Suspense (1913, starring Lois Miller), Post No Bills (1923, James Parrott), Giraffe Hunting in Uganda (French documentary, 1910), The Pest (1922, Stan Laurel), and nine other films, including another chapter of the 1924 serial Flight Around the World.

While not as highbrow as Gravy's last post, the WWE has just released "The Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling"

WCCW was a revolutionary wrestling organization out of Texas back in the 80s. Every major star went through there. It was a hotbed of at-the-time innovative storylines. The centerpiece was the Von Erich family. Of five wrestling brothers only one is still alive today. All four met untimely and too-young deaths either through actions of their own or by bizarre accident. An interesting look inside the world of pro wrestling.

Another dvd, "Heroes of World Class" tells the same story, but without the WWE's sometimes revisionist history.

My Post Lady today brought me Chan 3 and Home Alone 3, a guilty pleasure, although not near as good as the first two HA's. These should ensure my enshrinement among Ivan's subcontractors at Deep Discount. :P

The postman brought me my copy of the JUNGLE JIM serial from my VCI shipment. Problem was, the paper with it listed the DVD as my backorder from my 14-DVD order, annnd I have not received the first 13 yet! A call to VCI confirms they have shipped them out, so with tracking number in hand, I must now deal with the post office. Oh boy.

Also picked up DEADZONE Season 4 at Wal-Mart. Yeah I was X-mas shopping, but it was super-cheap and I needed it(!).***

*** Update: I didn't need it. Now I have to go return it to Wal-Mart, which is the only thing worse than actually shopping at Wal-Mart.

I picked up my favorite film from the past year--Once. Hopefully, the Academy will remember this film in the "Best Original Song" category when Oscar time rolls around.

Ordered Season 4 of "The Wire". I think one of the best series ever shown on HBO and filmed entirely on location in Baltimore, Maryland. It's written by the same people who did "Homicide Life on the Streets". A little more grittier but well acted by Dominic West and Lance Reddick to name a few. The other series I ordered was "Inspector Lynley" Season 5 which unfortunately is possibly the last season. It stars Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small as two Scotland Yard Detectives. One happens to be titled and the other blue collar who work together to solve crimes. Interspersed in each story is whats going on in their own lives. Another great series from England with wonderful stories that usually run around 2 hours each. This series has been shown on PBS.

I concur.....While many people were glued to the TV with the Sopranos (which I liked) I have been a devout follower of the Wire since Day one....I really enjoyed how the story every season switched gears with New story Arc (with the Bad Guys so to speak) yet they tied in with the other seasons by an ever so slight thread...I am going to miss it......I believe this is the "Last" season....

Met Isiah Whitlock today who plays a senator on the Wire as well as a character in the new Enchanted film. Really nice guy. Promises some big surprises next year but of course couldn't talk about them!
