More post-Christmas sales and giftcards netted me for a grand total of $60 three more Criterions, John Huston's Under the Volcano (#410), Robert Bresson's Pickpocket (#314), and Akira Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well (#319)

amazon.com is having a "buy one, get one free" sale on more than 170 TV DVDs, so I picked up the first seasons of Bewitched and Hazel, two childhood faves, for under thirty bucks.

Get thee behind me, Gravy. You shall tempt me no more with your announcements. (Besides, I've already been there and they have nothing that's not already in my collection.)

With the arrival of the Langdon set, I also received the "Silent Epics" set from the Ford at Fox collection (I figured it would do me until I come into a large inheritance to get the big enchilada), and this afternoon the postperson brought me the Samuel Fuller Eclipse set--which I was tickled to get because I found it also on sale at Amazon a few weeks back and I didn't want to pony up a large amount of scratch just to get The Steel Helmet.

I know you're the TV on DVD guy... I'm wondering about the quality of the "I'm Dickens, He's Fenster" set you have, as that is a show I've always heard raves about. Any other TV obscurities that you recommend?

The Dickens-Fenster collection (which I purchased from a seller at ioffer.com) is iffy at best, some good transfers and some horrible. But I have a portable DVD player that makes a lot of this stuff look better than it is; if you're going to show it on a big honkin' plasma television, however, you're probably going to be disappointed. Same for The Mothers-in-Law: the transfers are watchable but for the discriminating palate I'd caveat with extreme emptor.

I was very pleased with the Thriller and M Squad purchases (again from ioffer.com), though--the quality is very good and I've always been a big Thriller fan. I watched one of my favorites the other night, "A Wig for Miss DeVore."

Your right about Ioffer.com. I was able to get the complete Spenser TV Series on 17 Discs and quality runs from fair to good. This will have to do until the Series is released officially by Warner Brothers Home Video if and when it ever happens.

Another day, another three Criterions. This time, Godard's Masculin Feminin (#308), Banuel's The Milky Way (#402), and Visconti's Le Notti Bianche (#296).

Gravy, have you seen Coronado 9? It's a syndicated Rod Cameron series that was filmed at the old Republic studio with many episodes directed by William Witney.

Well, you have the first two, so thinking obviously left the equation a long time ago. ;)

I'm beginning to think this guy really is Batman...he's obviously got a bank account like Bruce Wayne's...

Seriously, Bats--Panzer is right; the Chaplin Mutuals set is a must-own for any classic movie DVD collection. Personally, my preferences re: the great silent clowns run to Keaton and Lloyd, but Charlie's "golden dozen" is just the ticket for when I want a good hearty laugh.

I received an Amazon.co.uk package this afternoon, and I swear it was the biggest box that they've ever sent me. Inside was the Region 2 (Network) release of The Prisoner: 40th Anniversary Special Edition...pricey, but I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of it.

LOL - when you pay your butler the pittance that Alfred receives, you'll find you always have some spare pocket change.

I agree with you on Lloyd and Keaton, both are a riot. I have the Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection that came out a few years ago, and it was worth every penny (of Alfred's salary).

And I believe I owe you a "thanks", too Igsy, for that Chaplin/Mutual recommendation. So...thanks.

You have Galactica 1980 and make a comment like that? As a fellow purchaser I can tell you that getting Galactica 1980 and thinking have absolutely nothing to do with each other. ;)
