Amazon.com is currently having a sale on 20th Century Fox's Studio Classics. Normally listing at $14.95, they're now selling them at $7.97 each. I'd call them a bargain even at $14.95 as they offer nice transfers and (usually) plenty of extras. Some even come with episodes of A&E's "Biography" series, some others come with an episode of AMC's "Backstory" series about the given movie. I've ordered the following 8 and expect them to arrive this week: All About Eve An Affair To Remember Desk Set The Grapes of Wrath How To Steal a Million In Old Chicago A Letter to Three Wives The Song of Bernadette I also ordered On Golden Pond which isn't part of that series. This one cost me a whopping $9.99! |

Those are great deals, for some great movies, Rog, you can't go wrong. I picked them up as they came out, but like you said, they are worth it at twice the price. This is one series of releases by Fox that rival the great work put out by Warner Bros. |

I received my first DVD of the week today...a TV set, the 10th season of M*A*S*H. By the way, did you ever hear of any of Universal's older DVDs going dead? I've come across talk of that recently at Home Theatre Forums and I found my copy of one of those they mention (Apollo 13) has indeed stopped working. I'm not even sure I'm going to bother writing them about it...I may just pitch it. |

It has something to do with the glue keeping everything on...apparently it gave out after awhile...perhaps Universal wasn't real good at this in their earlier releases. I jokingly told a friend of mine that with the Universal problems and with 20th Century Fox screwing us on the MASH special features (making us buy them again if we want those) that I may be buying only Warners DVDs before long. My copy of On Golden Pond came today. I also got two CDs, one by Eartha Kitt and one by Deborah Allen. I actually mistakenly ordered the wrong Eartha Kitt CD as this one had a nearly identical title to the one I wanted. I'll keep this one anyway...it's got some standards I'll enjoy her take on and there was really only one song I wanted to hear that didn't make this collectioin. Who knows, I might not even like that song, it just had a funny title. |

Universal does it again. I bought a trio of musical-type CDs this week, the new Red Hot Chili Peppers 2-CD set, Paul Simon's Surprise, and Neil Young's Living With War, which includes the toe-tapping anthem "Let's Impeach the President." I like all of 'em. |

Speaking of Universal, what was the deal when they first came out with the Back To The Future trilogy? I heard something about the prints being "misframed". What does that mean? Where they pressed in the wrong aspect ratio? I saw that happen once...the first DVDs of Silverado were put in a 1:1.85 aspect ratio when it was really shot in the wider 1:2.35 ratio. Surprisingly, I don't think that was a Universal release... |

I had bought the Future trilogy for Kid Gravy, and yeah, it was announced that one or more of the discs were "misframed" and left out too much stuff that was supposed to be there. I would never watch those films, and he would never notice, so I eschewed the opportunity Universal was offering to send the discs back for a replacement. |

Most if not all widescreen movies are actually shot in 1:1.33 fullscreen and then cropped to widescreen. The Future Trilogy went back to the fullscreen masters and when they cropped the image it was either too far to the top or bottom of the image. I wouldn't have bothered with replacement discs if Universal hadn't been such jerks about it. The set was first released in region 2 and complaints immediately started coming in. So Universal knew there was a problem. But they didn't want to miss the Christmas season so they refused to acknowledge a problem. Then after the region 1 release they finally admitted there was a slight problem in one or two scenes which had just come to their attention. Funny how they went to all the trouble or remastering the films for a slight problem with one or two scenes. |

Today I received all but one of the Studio Classics movies I ordered...7 arrivals today. Here's a list of what ones I got plus one or two of the many extras on each disc... An Affair To Remember--Includes episode of AMC Backstory about the making of the film. All About Eve--Includes quite a few extras including another episode of Backstory plus two commentaries, one featuring Celeste Holm. Desk Set--Commentary by Dina Merrill and Neva Patterson The Grapes of Wrath--Includes A&E's "Biography" episode about producer Darryl F. Zanuck. How To Steal a Million--Includes A&E's "Biography" episode about star Audrey Hepburn. In Old Chicago--Include's "Roadshow" extended version of the film plus A&E's "Biography" episode about Don Ameche The Song of Bernadette--Includes A&E's "Biography" episode about Jennifer Jones. Amazon.com is having a sale on these 20th Century Fox Studio Classics releases for $7.97 each which is how I came to get these. A few new ones will be coming soon (in July, I think) and the one of those I most want is the swashbuckler "The Black Swan" starring Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara. Added Note--The above was posted at 12:47 PM...about 2 hours later, a UPS delivery man brought the final movie of this order, the aforementioned A Letter To Three Wives. Extras in this one include yet another episode of A&E's "Biography" (on Linda Darnell), and a commentary. |

I ended up picking up the Cecil B. DeMille set, too... how could I pass it up, having read the reviews and finding out how smutty Sign of the Cross is??? |

Came into some extra cash this week, so I splurged a little (well, a lot) and picked up THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK MASTERPIECE COLLECTION, BETTE DAVIS COLLECTION VOL. 2, THE LON CHANEY (JR) COLLECTION, DEADWOOD: SEASON 2 and COMPULSION. Popped in the Lon Chaney disc, to see the quality of THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN (a personal favorite) and I am happy to say it looks and sounds great. Like the DVD case says, throw away your inferior version, because this is the definitive edition of this film. |

Picked up a moderate number of movies at Cinevent in Columbus, including Twentieth Century, a Frances Langford double feature, a couple "Carry On" movies, some Republic and PRC horror, a Ken Maynard double feature (Drum Taps and The Two Gun Man, a VCI release) and Tom Keene in Pardon My Gun (Sinister Cinema). Most noteworthy, at least for me, were the new DVDs of obscure movies (well, some were obscure to me) from www.VintageFilmBuff.com: I picked up 1930's Screen Teams #2, a pair of movies (Guilty as Hell and The Great Hotel Murder) starring Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen, and if I like their looks, I'll likely order more. |

HGB3, if you would be so kind, do report back on the quality of these movies. I haven't checked out the site yet, but if the quality is good, then another source for obscure, older movies is always welcome. |

So far this week, I have only gotten one DVD, I think...the 2-disc Anniversary Edition of Apollo 13 which I ordered when I found my first copy of the movie had gone dead. I believe I mentioned that elsewhere, either in this thread or another. I still have several on the way...but isn't that always the case? |
