Just received 50's Sci-Fi Double Feature: The Jungle/King Dinosaur and Frankie & Annette MGM Movie Legends Collection . Watched Beach Party with the niece and two of the nephews. Looks like I'll be watching the rest alone. Some people just don't recognize culture when they see it.

Big day today, with seasons 2, 3, and 4 of The Bob Newhart Show; Charlie Chan, Vol. 4; Lubitsch Musicals set from Criterion; the Robert Donat boxed set with The Ghost Goes West, a "restored" Count of Monte Cristo (113 min.), The 39 Steps, and tons of bonus material; and the 41-cartoon Oscar winners/nominees collection.

Here's my miserly post.....Sunday I bought Casablanca at Wal*Mart :) for $9.50.

It's too good not to own.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

Picked up 30 Days of Night. I found it an interesting twist on the vampire story.

Arrived today, a boxed set from Europe, the "Arabian Nights Collection". Features Arabian Nights (1942), which I already had, and two films not available on DVD in America: Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves (1944) with Maria Montez, Jon Hall, Turhan Bey, and Andy Devine, and Bagdad (1949) with Maureen O'Hara and Vincent Price.

While visiting Wal-Mart for something else I stopped by their $1 DVDs. Picked up a Rocky Jones Space Ranger with Beyond the Curtain of Space and Crash of the Moons. They are both 3 part stories so you get a total of 6 episodes. Also King of Kong Island , a double feature of The Swiss Conspiracy and Casablanca Express, and The Sci-Fi Invasion which includes This Is Not a Test, Killers From Space, Wasp Woman, and Unknown World.

I love bargains. Found today, and with my discount for less than $11: Criterion #376, Powell & Pressburger's 49th Parallel, one of those jam-packed 2-disc sets.

A great movie, but I gotta know: where did you get the Arabian knights collection? Those Universals with Maria Montez just slay me. And the other one I haven't seen -- how 'bout a review, Mr. G?

I've tried to cut back on the DVD purchases of late, but it hasn't been easy. Most of the stuff I've bought have been Region 2 DVDs of films not available here in the States as of this post.

I bought a Netherlands copy of Last Embrace (1979) on eBay because it's one of my favorite Roy Scheider flicks. The dealer has a lot more R2 goodies, so I succumbed to temptation and purchased The Undercover Man (1949) and They Won't Believe Me (1947) as well.

The only other items to arrive at Castle Yesteryear were the George of the Jungle collection and some Columbia comedy shorts that I got from another eBay seller, who took his sweet time in getting them to me.

So many DVDs...so little time...

I think I only have one DVD coming this week, My Best Girl starring Mary Pickford. However, if I win my own little Oscar contest, someone might be treating me to another. I usually don't do that well in my own contest, though, so odds aren't in my favor. Then again, there's only 19 people taking part this year...and prizes go to the top five.

Got a kick out of this week's circular for Best Buy; it lists as a "new release" the first season of The Bob Newart Show, with a picture of that DVD set. However, what's ACTUALLY being released on Tuesday is the first season of Newhart, Bob's later show (the one set in Vermont). The earlier set came out several years ago, of course.

Thanks for reviewing Hoppity, Gravy. I almost bought that piece of shit! Thanks for taking the plunge. I'll stick with my copy from AMC a million years ago... That has credits, and it looks lovely!

I wish I didn't have to do stuff like that; I love this film (it's in my top five animated features of all time) and I couldn't even watch the new DVD all the way through. What a shame. It's nearly worth buying so you could show people just how rotten classic films can look when a major company doesn't care and just slaps stuff onto DVD. They obviously thought, "This is for kids, so who gives a damn that it looks like shit?"
