Finishing up The Scarlet Horseman and I'm up to Chapter 7 of The Mystery Squadron. Also have recently watched 2 Richard Talmadge movies from Alpha Video: The Speed Reporter aka Deadline and The Live Wire. Both of the movies are non stop action with stunts galore from Mr. Talmadge plus the copies from Alpha are good to very good.

Thanks for the head's up on the Talmadge DVD; I will surely look for it, because I loved every second of Pirate Treasure.

Today, I finally found a reasonably priced copy of the Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky boxed set, with La Cravate, Fando Y Lis, El Topo, and The Holy Mountain, and two additional CDs of soundtrack music from the films are included.

I've been getting all the Fox noirs on the knee-jerk basis, often without knowing anything about the films beforehand. Thus I was pleasantly surprised today while briefly checking out the latest batch to find that Black Widow was not only in color, but CinemaScope and stereophonic sound and with directional dialog. Obviously a number of those factors preclude official noir status, but what we have here is a genuine historical artifact of a particular form of movie-making during a relatively brief period at the end of Hollywood's Golden Age. Sort of like fins on 50s cars - gloriously indulgent, flamboyant, sui generis and short-lived.

Also, incredible location footage of 1954 New York City, undoubtedly a treasure trove of stock footage for every period NY pic made thereafter.

And a damn poor movie to boot.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

I'm fearing that, actually, but if so, I think the other stuff will carry me through. I can like trash that's wrapped up attractively.

One good thing about being single is I don't have to justify any money I spend. Today I received my order of The Fugitive season 1 volume 2, Justice League seasons 1 and 2, and Justice League Unlimited seasons 1 and 2.

I've picked up a few odds and ends here and there--two Region 2 discs, Wild River (1960) and 10 Rillington Place (1971), as well as a copy of The Crowd (1928) from efilmic.com.

Since it was heavily discounted, I picked up the Harveytoons DVD set. Holy crap, this has to be the worst packaged set I've ever had. Four double sided discs crammed into a small container (the kind where you have to lift one disc to get the other. Geez!

But $22 is about all it's worth... 19 hours of mindless cartoons is hard to pass up at that price. Plus I love Famous Studios....

I got the Heckle and Jeckle cartoons from thadk a couple of days ago. If you are a fan of the two zany, mischievious magpies I very much recommend this set. Mrs Smiley really enjoys what she has seen so far. Good job thadk
