I got my first blu-ray disc today: Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

From what I just read on Thad's blog, it's crappy and altered.

Looking forward to your comments on Blu-Ray, Mr. G.

Thad is overly critical of a lot of animated features that rank with the finest works of artistry cinema has ever given us. I love the guy, but don't let his criticisms dissuade you.

Here's the upcoming NYTimes review of Sleeping Beauty...

Well, Thad persuaded me not to sink my hard-earned shekels into rebuying Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho. That's gotta count for something.

Yes, but what do YOU think, Gravy?

We discussed Sleeping Beauty over at the Squadron when the original DVD came out. I agree with Mr. Kehr that it’s a cold film.

I’m actually much more interested in Grand Canyon, which has stunning photography, is a favorite, and might be one of those films justifying a Blu-Ray upgrade.

I'm not talking about the quality of the film itself. I'm talking about Disney's "restoration". By restoration I mean, completely altering the colors.

Well, this is an interesting thread... the reason I opted to only pick up the new 2-disc Psycho is because the previous DVD of that title was so crappy. I'm perfectly content with the previous DVDs of Rear Window and Vertigo. Neither of them are perfect, but they're good enough until the Blu-Ray "improved again" editions come along. Rear Window isn't one of my faves anyway, but man do I love Vertigo.

As for Disney messing with the color of things, I will leave that to the experts, who spend much of their time seemingly bitching about DNVR damages that I rarely see anywayses; I'm not the guy to ask about stuff like that.

Sleeping Beauty is a film I never cared for all that much, until I got the British widescreen DVD a couple of years ago, which came with Grand Canyon. In widescreen and stereo? Blew me away. Grand Canyon is a terrific looking short, too. A great duo. I guess Sleeping Beauty can be put alongside Fantasia as the two Disney movies that most impressed me when I finally saw them the way they were meant to be seen (with Fantasia, it's the surround Fantasiasound that is so impressive).

Yeah, so, is the Blu-Ray a big improvement or not? Can't tell from your comments.

I'm glad we can help make this more interesting. I don't understand what you mean by the Psycho DVD being "crappy." I own the same title and I didn't have any trouble with it at all.

The Psycho DVD I have isn't even anamorphic, and on my TV set it looks rotten.

Now was that so hard? As for myself, I'm still using one of those gasoline-powered non-anamorphic sets, so that's probably why I don't need to buy another copy.

More on Sleeping Beauty here:

Note that the interviewer has no idea what "penultimate" means, and the Disney guy is nice enough not to point that out.

I haven't read Thad's comments, but the Harris review suggests great care was given to restoring the coloring of the film.

Penultimate? Does that mean being blown off? Guess I'll figure this out on my own.

I thought "penultimate" meant "next to last."

(This new bulletin board blows, by the way.)

No, you're mistaken. Look up "antepenultimate" and you'll see that it means "vote Democratic".
