Rogmeister, head over to the Funny Pages section, I have posted a quick review of the first few episodes of Superboy’s first season. The gauntlet is up, but check the post for details. |

Haven't quite decided if this is guilty pleasure week or moment of weakness week. Picked up King Kong (1976 version) and King Kong Lives. |

Wow. You must be IN those movies, right? Quiet week for me. I got that Superman documentary and a boxed set of the TV series The Office (the British version). Oh, and The Witch's Mirror and Curse of the Crying Woman (Mexican horror) DVDs should be here any day now. |

Thanks, Batman, I did see those reviews a few minutes ago. I actually remember that I used to watch that show though I remember few details. No DVD arrival today but I did finally get the regular box for the 6th season of The Simpsons. The one in the store is the container in the form of Homer's head. You can get a replacement for it for just a shipping charge. I think I've been waiting about 6 weeks for this. With the 7th season you can buy either version at a store, it's up to you. The containers shaped like the characters' heads is a novel idea but they appear to be a bit flimsy to me. |

Bit of a big week for me, used some b-day dough to help make it through. Besides the John Wayne/John Ford Collection (still have to get Ford's solo collection), I also picked up Season 3/4 of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, Season 3 of LOIS & CLARK, season 4 of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and ANIMATED ALL-STARS (which is a collection of 50 cartoons, including FLASH GORDON). Marlin, don’t feel too guilty about picking up those King Kong movies, as I did, too. And no, LG, I wasn’t in them either. |

My final DVD of the Week is also my first DVD of July...it's season 3 of Lois & Clark. I'm surprised to look at the back and not see a listing for any audio commentary. I thought Dean Cain was doing one per set. It'd be great if they could get Teri Hatcher to do one for the final fourth season whenever it comes out. I doubt it'll happen, though. Perhaps she's not interested or is too busy with her current series but if she hasn't done one by now, she probably won't for the last season. |

July could be an expensive month for me (although I'll probably spread my purchases out). July 11 -- With several minutes of missing footage restored and Carl Davis scores, the new CHAPLIN MUTUAL COMEDIES set is a must buy, even though I have the previously released Mutual discs. July 18 -- Bruce Campbell fans rejoice, two television series featuring the lantern-jawed ham will finally be available: THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY JR and JACK OF ALL TRADES. I'd highly recommend the rarely seen JACK OF ALL TRADES. It's stupid, anachronistic comedy at its best. I'm also highly curious about the Kino release of DR. MABUSE THE GAMBLER. I've never seen the film, but I'm yet to be disappointed by Fritz Lang. Keep spinnin', Ignatz |

With so much unwatched still and so many DVDs coming in later this month and two vacation trips coming up in the next few months, I am trying to cut back my DVD purchases -- a little. So this week I have nothing ordered, although I do expect to pick up a couple of Fox Studio Classics, The Black Swan and The River's Edge. |

July looks to be a pricey month for me too, Iggy, I know how ya feel. I want to get that Chaplin set, too, but a quick question: I have both Warner Bros sets, is the material in this new set different from that offered by Warners? I do want all three of the Fox Studio Classics being released this month, as well as THE INCREDIBLE HULK: Season One (surprise), ELECTRIC EDWARDIANS, DR. MABUSE, THE GAMBLER, THE PRETENDER: SEASON 4, WARNER FILM NOIR VOL. 3, WARNER TOUGH GUYS COLLECTION and I am sure something else before the month ends. And I still, still have to pick up that solo John Ford boxed set. Aggghhh!!! |

The new Chaplin Mutual Shorts 90th Anniversary Set is an updated version of the three "Chaplin Mutuals" DVDs that Image previously released. Missing footage has been rediscovered an inserted into several of the 12 Mutual Shorts. My favorite Chaplin short, ONE AM, for example, has seven added minutes. That should make a big difference for a 20-minute short. These are as close as we're likely to see to complete versions of all of the Mutual Short Subjects. In addition, the awful electronic scores on the previous release have been replaced by full orchestral scores by the great Carl Davis. A couple of documentaries fill out the package. I think most fans of silent comedy will find the new package a worthwhile double-dip. --Ig |

Thanks, Iggy. I am going to assume that the earlier Image releases contained different material from the Warner releases, and since I don't have the Image sets, I will pick up the new Mutual set. |

The Warners releases consisted of Chaplin's work from 1918 forward (the First National short subjects and his feature-length films). The Image set consists of the twelve shorts he made at Mutual Studios between 1916 and 1917 (including classics such as THE IMMIGRANT, ONE A.M., and THE ADVENTURER). Many critics consider the Mutual short subjects Chaplin's best work. Overall, I'd agree with that assessment. That's not to say that Chaplin's later work on the Warners sets is not high quality. CITY LIGHTS and the short A DOG'S LIFE are amongst my favorites. Chaplin just seemed to be working most consistently at a high level during the Mutual years. I hope you enjoy the set, Ig |

I pre-ordered The Black Swan as well as a Johnny Cash concert from 1971 that was performed in Denmark. Neither has arrived yet. I did receive the 6th season of Little House on the Prairie a few days ago and Wednesday night I picked up the Back To The Future trilogy while in K-Mart. |

Thanks for the clarification, Iggy, I will be sure to let you know what I think of Chaplin's earlier work. |

I have all of the previously released Chaplin Mutuals, and I have always been delighted with the quality of them, so I don't feel a need for a quality upgrade, but---seven new minutes to One A.M.?! That sounds worth the price of a disc right there--that's also my favorite Chaplin short, and the one the kids request over and over again, and the one we usually show to someone who's never seen silent comedy. Are the discs being offered individually? |
