I’ve been reading all of this foo-foo-rah re “The Vanishing Legion” with diminishing interest each day. I suppose that’s because I never really gave a tinker’s dam (that’s the correct spelling) whether I ever watched it or not. But, that gave me an idea… (oh, oh, watch out). What restorations WOULD be important to me… AND to YOU??? For starters, here’s mine: 1) Ace Drummond – the current version is passable, but I keep thinking there must be a pristine print of this SOMEWHERE in Universal City!! 2) The Vigilante – a real underrated serial (IMO). I loved it as a kid & still find it interesting as an adult. Again, a pristine version would be greatly appreciated. 3) The Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok and Overland with Kit Carson – same as above. 4) Brenda Starr – I guess I’d like to see a good copy of this strictly for its historical value: Sam’s first serial for Columbia AND it utilized a lotta Monogram staff in its production. That does it for now, BUT what would YOU like to see??? |

As I recall, the old VHS of Ace Drummond was pretty good, but I haven't watched it for a long while. The Spider Returns is one that nobody seems to have in good condition; every copy of The Phantom Creeps I've ever seen is so-so at best (but the serial's not too good anyway). I'd love a nice copy of The Adventures of Smilin' Jack, and if Sony is going to release another serial on DVD and it's not a Spider serial, I hope it's The Monster and the Ape. |

I'd love to see TIH MINH. THE EXPLOITS OF ELAINE exists in a print with French titles -- I'd like to see it in the original English. Since we're playing "what if," I sure wouldn't mind seeing THE LONE RANGER. And yeah, a decent print of THE SPIDER RETURNS. |

Oooops. I originally meant to disqualify "The Lone Ranger" for the following reasons: 1) It's kind of a no-brainer in that practically everyone would like to see this one restored. 2) Although not impossible, at this late date the chances of this ever happening seem highly improbable. Probably should disqualify "Daredevils of the West" & the 2nd Mountie film with Allan Lane for the same reasons. |

Tell you about a "tinkers dam"? Hoo boy, that goes back a l-o-o-o-o-ong way & my memory on it is hazy at best. So, I cheated & went out to Yahoo & came up with the following: "... making a paste of water and flour/clay, the tinkers dammed an area around the site so as to contain the molten metal used for patching until it solidified and hardened at which point the 'dam' was discarded as having no further use or value. Accordingly, "not giving a (tinkers) dam" was a reference to a thing of no importance that you couldn't care less about." |

Cool. I had always thought it meant tinkers did a lot of cussin' (the ones I met in Ireland sure did). |

Actually, another one of my wishes just came true -- Trevor in Australia just released a good print of RED BARRY. |

I would like to see better copies of FLYING G-MEN and SECRET OF TREASURE ISLAND. I heard that someone I know got hold of the latter title and is working on it now. |

Yeah, I've heard that too. Unfortunately, my current player has some problems with DVD-R's. And... I should have been more specific. When I said a "good print", I must confess I had VCI's releases of "Jungle Jim" & "Secret Agent X9" in mind. Wonder where they got them????? Personally, I suspect that Universal has a lot of unearthed treasures in its capacious vaults!!!! |

The Secret Agent X-9 and Jungle Jim prints came from Fred Shay in New Jersey. He has Brenda Starr too, and only wants something like 15 grand for it. |
