We saw BRENDA STARR REPORTER last year at SerialFest, and the print is in very bad condition. The pre-print material had white spots all over, and it was missing one chapter. On the bright side, it is a pretty good serial, much better that the ones Katzman did the next three years. There is only a couple of fights in the 13 episodes, but it still stayed interesting.

re: The Secret Agent X-9 and Jungle Jim prints ---- they were done by Universal. Fred just has contacts there...he had nothing to do with the actual transfers.

Oh, sure. I didn't mean to insinuate that he was. I was just stating the source of their prints. I don't think that the newer releases have come from him. I'm not sure though. I've only met him once, and have never had direct contact with him or his films.

This thread began over six years ago & there have subsequently been a number of restorations... including some of the ones mentioned in this thread. S-o-o-o-o-o-o, what would you NOW like to see restored. Here's my picks:

1. THE PHANTOM RIDER (1936) - The last of the MacRae serials before Sarecky & Koenig came in for their 2-year stay.
2. CAPTAIN AMERICA (1944) - No, it certainly has very little to do with the comic.... & Purcell looks ridiculous in that costume. On the other hand, it's got Gray, Atwill, Hicks & Davidson. It's also a 15-chapter production which, for some reason, never seemed to drag for me. Oh yeah, loved the score.
3. THE SPIDER RETURNS (1941) - With the exception of about a half dozen titles, all of the Columbias could use some restoration. I picked this one 'cause it's supposed to be Horne at his wildest.... & that I would like to see.

What a surprise!

I dunno what I said six years ago, but today, it's The Iron Claw, Pirate's Treasure, and Flying G-Men.

Those would be my picks too, but I would still add Tih Minh.

Pretty much anything silent for me, with THE LIGHTNING RAIDER topping the list.

I'd like to see "Drums of Fu Manchu" tidied up a bit. Also the first episode of "Batman", which is strangely off while the rest of the serial looks great.

The first episode of "Batman" is important because it has that brilliant introductory shot of Bats, sitting behind a desk with his chin resting on his hands like a schoolteacher being sarcastic, as the camera trucks in and the narrator assures us that this is the mysterious terror of the underworld.

Several chapters of it does exist. Grood has mentioned in the past of restoring it.

I forgot the silent version of The Green Arrow, probably the silent I'd most like to see, but so far only one chapter has turned up.

What has turned up is of the silent GREEN ARCHER is three reels from a five reel feature version that was never released. It is in the UCLA film archives. Riddle Rider has seen it, but I understand that it is no longer available for screening. Another silent that I would love to see, but is presumed lost is THE MOON RIDERS, which I think starred Art Accord. I read a synopsis of PERILS OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN, and it looked good on paper, but that is also believed lost..

I dunno what I said six years ago......
Well, all ya gotta do is go back to page 1.

But, being the good guy that I am, you don't even have to do that.

The Spider Returns is one that nobody seems to have in good condition; every copy of The Phantom Creeps I've ever seen is so-so at best (but the serial's not too good anyway). I'd love a nice copy of The Adventures of Smilin' Jack, and if Sony is going to release another serial on DVD and it's not a Spider serial, I hope it's The Monster and the Ape.

Hoy Hoy, you bet. The Monster and the Ape is the serial that, if you've seen the first chapter, you've seen it all.

VCI has a good print of THE PHANTOM CREEPS. A lot of Columbia serials are only available from poor prints. Panzer, I get a kick out of MONSTER AND THE APE.
