Sheeeesh, I'm easy. I'd just like to see VCI release a nice looking version of THE PHANTOM RIDER (1936). Why?

1. Really enjoyed Buck's THE RED RIDER.

2. Riddle Rider has me intrigued about the cues used therein.
Riddle Rider probably made a leap about the music in "Red Rider" based on IMDB or the "Tarzan the Tiger" credits. The main/end title ("Main Title #2") was composed by Al Short. Many, but not all, of the cues tracked in the serial did originate in 'Tarzan and were composed by Sam Perry. A few other Perry cues heard originated in "Lightning Express," "Spell of the Circus," and other synched silent (non-dialogue foreign releases). One cue, "The Wild Ride" by Guy Bevier is also heard as chapter resume music in "Phantom of the Air." Two of Heinz Roemheld's cues were tracked from synched silent releases of "Boudoir Diplomat" and "Outside the Law." David Broekman was head of the music department at U from late '29 to mid-'31; he composed virtually no music but according to Bernhard Kaun never offered any recognition to the composers who worked under his management (when a producer complimented some music and inquired who composed it, Broekman supposedly responded with "oh, one of the fellows in the department").

The first three or four chapters of Tarzan the Tiger is mostly generic silent film music. Subsequent chapters were composed largely by Perry. Bert Fiske, although credited in the first few chapters of ''Tarzan was a composer who worked in the cartoon or shorts unit; I can only find four cues listed for him during that 18 month period from 1930. That's not necessarily the extent of his output, but at any rate none of his music is heard in "Red Rider."

Sorry if my post was confusing. Riddle Rider has, as far as I know, never said anything about background music in RED RIDER, BUT he did, at least once, comment favorably on the music in THE PHANTOM RIDER. The only reason I mentioned RED RIDER was because I liked its construction & humor.... &, hopefully, figured there might be more in Buck's later outing.

When I read your post I searched to learn what it referenced concerning music. I found that Riddle Rider had responded to a post of yours about "Red Rider" where he wrote of the music. I assumed that's what you were referring to - but I didn't realize his post was from 10/28/10!

The use of the term "restoration" for "good video transfer" always throws me until I realize what you guys are talking about. Restoration is something you do with film elements, not bootleg DVDs.

For those interested in the restoration or preservation of original nitrate film elements, time is running out.
Saw something yesterday about this subject which amused me. The author is a film critic & worked for several decades in movie theatres:

"To be honest, I never saw any difference between carbon arc projection and Xenon lamps. Carbon arc is probably "warmer." It's also a pain in the ass, because the point of brightness shifts as the carbon burns. Honestly, I think the whole "nitrate looks better" blather is probably on a par with "records sound better than CDs." I'd say the same about all the boo-hoo-hooing over 35 mm prints. And for that matter, the difference between 2K and 4K is debatable as far as the naked eye is concerned."

I'd say this here author is mistaken. "Nitrate is blather" is silly. Surely we all know that much. My bet, he's never seen a real nitrate print. Few of the younger critics have.

He's about our age.... & I don't know that much.

I'm interested in saving the images, but how you save them matters not a whit to me.

You really don't remember what nitrate prints looked like, mort? Too bad. Dave Shepard showed a nitrate print of Ninotchka at his theater in State College, back in the Dark Ages, and it was a revelation to me. We didn't know what we had when we had it.
