Watching Any Good Serials?

Apropos of nothing, I find myself recalling Tailspin Tommy. The hero is sort of a cornfed Luke Skywalker who lives with his folks and dreams of flying a for-real air-o-plane, and in episode one practices by drag racing a car with wings down main street. He meets a lady pilot (who spends most of the rest of the serial pouring coffee at the airfield greasy spoon) and saves a struggling air freight company from an evil rival.

A lot of the usual with biplanes instead of horses and sedans, but the plot does veer off on some curious tangents: There's a mad scientist, complete with death trap, who comes and goes in barely two episodes, never to be mentioned again. There's a sudden earthquake, probably swiped from a feature -- one guy ties a bandage around his head just before leaving a building and pulls it off as soon as he's indoors. And Tommy takes time out from delivering vital shipments to work on a Hollywood movie, which allows some WWI-themed footage.

Oh yes, he's got Noah Berry Jr. as his yokel sidekick. Berry made it into the sequel, but they replaced Tommy.

If you like Pirates of the High Seas you will like The Sea Hound.

Kan, does this mean if I wasn't a fan of THE SEA HOUND, then I won't like PIRATES OF THE HIGH SEAS?

Sorry, if they are personal favs, but I found the storyline in THE SEA HOUND to be pedestrian at best.

Hi Bats. Don't apologize if you didn't care for these two serials but I think it is a safe bet that if you didn't like one you won't like the other. There are probably serials you like that I don't. I have always been a fan of tall ships and movies with them. These two serials are almost identical. As I said above Crabbe even said so. Pirates of the High Seas is a serial I have my earliest and fondest memories of. The scenes of the cabin cruiser the villains used that submerged to escape capture is one of the earliest memories of I have of Saturday matinee serials.

Thanks, Smiley. And even though we both love BATMAN (we both love BATMAN...right?), I am sure there is a serial out there that I treasure that you would rather bury.

QUOTE The Black Tiger..."Pirates of the High Seas is better than many Republics of the era. Crabbe is charismatic and the story and action are above average."

QUOTE Pa Stark..."Check out the trailers for THE SEA HOUND and PIRATES OF THE HIGH SEAS, and you will see the same footage in both. Several post 1947 Columbia serials are under rated. Despite poor scripts, schlocky production values, and some uninspired acting, they did have Spencer Bennet directing, and he was a hell of a lot better than Fred Brannon or Franklin Adreon."

So there you have it. Recommendations from two of the "finest and most honest" villains in the business. A tiger with red eyes and "Honest" Pa Stark. If you can't trust these two who can you trust...

That's really not high praise for these serials, Smiley. Re-examine the sources for those quotes. :ermm: ;)

You got that right, BT. Being good at being bad helps with that particular feline.

Finished Zorro's Black Whip and am about to start Manhunt of Mystery Island with the always excellent Richard Bailey. Bailey looks a cross between Fred MacMurray and Jerry Seinfeld.

I finished watching Federal Agents vs. Underworkd Inc.. It's a rather pedestrian effort by Republic standards though the miniature work was outstanding as always. Kirk Alyn is passable as the heroic lead but the bad guys were much too tame for my tastes.

My favorite part, Kirk believes that he'll be able to parachute from a bi-plane and land safely atop a speeding train! Good luck with those calculations, Kirk.

I started The Royal Mounted Rides Again, last night. After the first chapter, all I can say is: At least it is not 15 episodes.
