I don't know where you read my opinion(s) (probably on this thread) but it's right on. I remember the first chapter was long, and I was waitin' for the cliffhanger, praying for it actually. And I'm not religious! There's the end of my Serial Squadron viewing. Oh well. |

With the mass exodus of a dozen or so of the original (and knowledgible) members the posting has dramatically diminished. Edited by KanSmiley, Jul 1 2009, 09:28 AM.

I'm only allowed one post a day on that board so that, as Grood explained, my posts are now like a serial. |

Yeah, beats me. What I do know is that I finally finished Zorro's Black Whip tonight, and while it probably won't make my list of favorites, it is a solid serial, with many good moments (and just as many duds). Next, I'm starting The Desert Hawk, which I understand benefits from a different setting from most serials. |

It sure does; it has scimitars. Alas, there doesn't seem to be a good print available yet. One post a day? Does he limit HIMSELF to one post a day? How about the folks who always attend SerialFest? Thought not. What a pompous liar! todd, I really like The Master Mystery. Does anybody know why Trail of the Octopus isn't on DVD yet? |

Paul Panzer: The biggest problem confronting Grood is how to hold on to what few people he has left. He started first by banning regular contributor Ace Drummond who helped run many of the SerialFests. Previously he had banned Todd Moore then he banned me (Barcroft) then my son-in-law (Son of Barcroft) for starting up a new chat room to compete with his only after he started editing and blanking our inputs during chats in his room. In the new chat room we average 12 to 15 people on Sundays and 8 to12 on Wednesday. We've got people KanSmiley and Riddle Rider back in the fold contributing during our chats so evidently we must be doing something right. Our credo is no one will be edited and everyone is welcome so if you are interested just go to the following website and request membership in our chat room at: http://theserialfamily.yuku.com/ Barcroft |

What's Grood's problem anyway ... why does he ban the most knowledgeable and helpful Serial contributors ? That doesn't make sense ! It seems to me that he would want to keep them active for the benefit of all Serial fans, not only that, but for the benefit and growth of the Squadron itself. |

Don: The biggest problem between those of us who have moved on and Grood was a distinct difference of opinion as to where the Squadron was going. This became evident especially during the last SerialFest where his time was spent on doing live melodramas and the rest of us preferring to watch serials. He asked the members for input and we gave him the input but that was not to is liking so thats when he started banning the members. Barcroft |

Finished the The Lost Jungle. Very good print from Rodney. Had not seen this one since the early 50's on TV. The first chapter was dynamite, with Betty's cirus act and dirigible breaking in half. The rest of the serial was pretyy mundane stuff; with action shifting between the stockade and the lost temple with the jungle serving as the go between. A ships captain and crew reside at the stockade, although it is not clear why; nor do you ever see the ship until the last chapter, via a rather crude matte. The jungle hosts any type of feline you can name, plus a bear!!!, who is the nemesis of the all too frequently present Syd Saylor. (In fairness, Syd is not nearly as obnoxious as he usually is, here). Beatty is referred to and calls himself "Beety". I always thought the pronounciation was "Batey". I know it was in the fifties and sixties when they were advertising the Clyde Beatty Cole Bros. circus. Overall two and 1/2 stars. Have watched the first 6 chapters of Republic's The Phantom Rider. Not a bad serial serial, albeit some of the cliffhangers are pretty weak. Chapter 3 ends with the Phantom Rider falling from a roof top into the middel of the street with a horde of bad guys galloping right at him. Chaper has the bad guys ride around him, save one baddie who has the drop on the Rider from poiny blank range, but simply rides away!!! Robert Kent is typical of Republic's bland leading men of the 40's. Hal Taliaferro, as Nugget, is the defacto sidekick and has some great lines. "I was down by the creek and saw a couple or two guys talking about robbing the bank tonight." |

Watched the first few chapters of The Master Mystery last night after work. Very interesting, I had never seen a silent serial before. It took a little getting use to the slower pace at the beginning of the serial but once the Automaton was introduced things really took off. Houdini is amazing to watch, his acrobatics are right up there with Dave Sharpe's (though I don't think Dave ever unlocked a door using his feet) and the mystery's intriguing. Is the Automaton a robot with a human brain, or is it a man disguised as a robot? Hmmmm. It's sad that so much footage from several chapters has been lost but the use of text helps bridge the gap between chapters 3 through 6. |

So if I'm reading you right, you're saying that Grood has banned some of his Squadron Forum members and Serialfest attendees over a simple difference of opinion ? Man that's weird ! What's this guy thinkin' ? Seems to me that banning knowledgeable Forum contributors and Serialfest attendees is Forum and Serialfest suicide. |

Todd, really enjoyed your dialogue with ol' Doc Grood on "Why We Watch 'Em". Obviously, don't agree with everything you said, but it was fun seeing the different reasons pipple came up with. As I mentioned, as a kid (& probably as an adult as well), I was drawn to serials because of the fantasy element. Subtract that & I really wouldn't have cared how many fights, car chases or repetitive cliffhangers you gave me, I just wouldn't have been sold. RADIO PATROL is a classic example. By the title, it sounds like a dull police procedural. Ahhhh, but here's a town that has an Egyptian (or somethin') section... and within it is a mummy case. You don't open the mummy case like every other mummy case I've seen. Oh no.. the front of this case seems to magically detach itself & levitate over to the side of the case. And within said case??? Why a man, obviously hypnotized, who follows every order of Frank Lackteen. Oh yeah, then there's the cool way the synopsis is given at the beginning... with the kid opening the comic book & the panels of the comic giving the story to date. Then the last panel disolves into the opening scene. There are definitely other aspects of the serial that I really enjoyed (the music, the steel plant scenes & the multiplicity of criminals), but it's the fantasy elements the totally sold me!! |

I generally like serials that have an interesting twist to them, like Phantom Empire's mixing a lost civilization sci fi plot with a western musical, The Spider constantly having to evade the police for his own murderous methods of dealing out justice while hunting down the villain in The Spider's Web, or casting Bela Lugosi as a romantic hero in The Return of Chandu. |
