The burning question is, what becomes of SerialFest? Will Ace throw one of his own? I'll fly across the country for that, if I know Grood won't be there.

The answer is yes, there will be a convention near Rutherford, NJ next May. It is about a 20 minute bus ride from the Port Authority in Manhattan. We are open to suggestions as to what you would like to see.

Anything but a whole serial all the way through. Eric's screening of Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars in its entirety drove me right out of the theater by the third chapter. Serials are too repetitious if you watch 'em that way. I would like to see a few silent serial chapters, but watching more than a few gets dull too. And no amateur theatricals AT ALL, please.

You have nothing to worry about there. We have already decided that anyone that suggests a play will have to sit through THE CLUTCHING HAND, HOP HARRIGAN, and YOUNG EAGLES while listening to Ace Drummond sing. :X

If a whole serial is presented at the get together I can guarantee it will not be shown all at once but spread out over the couple of days of the event. This was done when Daredevils of the West was shown in 2008 and everyone seemed to enjoy it that way.

Yeah, I don't mind that. That's the way he showed Spy Smasher the year I went and it was fine. You know, there is an art to programming festivals, and Eric never showed any interest in learning it. He would show something great and then show some stupid TV serial from the seventies. Unwise.

I would love to see one of the less-famous Republics like King of the Texas Rangers, or any Columbia in a decent print. It would be fun to watch Smilin' Jack or the second Secret Agent X-9. Actually, what we watch isn't the main thing -- it's just fun sit with people who know what serials are, and then talk about 'em, and everything else. I had a ball at the afterparties. For one thing, Eric wasn't there.

I've noticed every time it's brought up, that everyone seemed very upset about the showing of Danger Island from The Banana Splits. Why is that? I remember watching it in reruns back in the eighties and finding it an enjoying cliffhanger, there was a little too much slapstick at times, but for the most part a fun serial. Plus it was directed by a pre-Superman Richard Donner. Is the lack of enthusiasm due to it not being a classic film serial, or are my twenty-five year-old-memories faulty and it really just sucked?

What's going to happen at Rutherford, New Jersey next year is basically give the fans what they want. I'm sure as we get closer those planning on attending will be give a chance to voice what they would like to see and King of the Texas Rangers is a good choice as well as Deadwood Dick and your other mentioned suggestions.

Todd:
Most of the attendees who were at SerialFest when Eric showed Danger Island were not to excited about his choice. The time could have been better spent showing chapters of PD serials (as we well know that is all he would show) instead of Danger Island. When I attend functions like this I want serials from the golden years and later not the TV type shows.

When Eric showed Danger Island it was so amateurish (and such a faded print) that I left after a few minutes and talked to Henry Miyamoto in the lobby, so my time was well spent. When you fly thousands of miles to watch serials and instead get stupid TV crap and amateur theatricals, you can get peevish. I spent a lot of SerialFest exploring the countryside and decided never to go again. It was fun meeting the guys, but the programming was dismal. Every day Eric threw away the printed schedule and just showed whatever his whim dictated. I am glad I got to see The Masked Rider before Eric wrecked it, but that was the one highlight. This is the first time I have spoken of my disappointment with SerialFest, but I want to say once and for all that it was Eric alone who ruined it -- and I had no axe to grind because he didn't get mad at me for another couple of years. What I did notice at the event was his utter contempt for the serial fans -- he kept making belittling references to "these people."

I'm not saying he's Satan. If he ever again makes a quality DVD like Gangbusters, I'll buy it; but I doubt if he ever will. He has such a high opinion of himself that he doesn't listen to others. It's hard to learn from experience if you're like that. You remain a child: restless, irritable, discontent and filled with rage.

There were a lot of us sitting out in the lobby at Bucks County Community College instead of watching Danger Island. Besides you and Henry I was sitting out there talking to Ed Hulse along with my son in law SOB. Hopefully this will only happen after spending hours watching serials reflecting on what we just watched with a cold beer in our hands. I can honestly say I've learned to bend a few beers with my friends at the Fests over the years and hopefully it will continue in the future.

Is there a date for this thing yet? As ya'll know, I've been doing my own seminars in May... In 2010 they're at the very end of the month, with another in early June. That would probably preclude my attendance, although if I could squeeze it in I would...

As I was sittin' here readin' this, I got to wondering. ^o)
How is this 'Serialfest' gonna affect Eric (Grood) ?
Do you think he will now accuse people of stealing his idea of Serialfest ? ... cause a big stink, possibly try and sue someone over it ?
I wouldn't put it past him. ;)

I wouldn't call it Serialfest, either.

As to what good serials I'm watching... I'm watching The Green Hornet. Last night, in episode 2, there was something I always enjoy in serials... what I call the "faux deathtrap". The villains set something up, and you think that's going to be the cliffhanger for the episode... but the hero sidesteps it and then quickly blunders into some other trap ya didn't see coming. And I'm continuing to be impressed by Gordon Jones in the lead.

I always felt Jones was underrated in that serial. I thought he made a good action hero and showed quite a bit of range in the role.
