I always like Jones better than Hull myself. Of course, I hadn't seen Jones in anything before viewing HORNET (or at least hadn't been aware of seeing him).

Jones seemed like the young guy, fresh out of college (where he, of course, was the star fullback) who had returned home to take over the family business after the death of his father. Hull, on the other hand, was more the young socialite about town... which worked for The Spider, but wasn't as effective for the Hornet.

The thing about the Hornet serial that cracks me up is how much noise his car makes. What's up with that?

I know! That blows me away, too! It's hilarious... if you were in Detroit you would alert the metropolitan police department in Cleveland driving THAT buggy.

I too also like Gordon Jones as the Green Hornet. People assume he's not the hero type based on the parts he played later in his career i.e. Roy Rogers sidekick in a couple of Republics and as the cop on the Abbott and Costello TV show. I thought he played the part quite well and should have starred in the sequel instead of Warren Hull.

I agree. Hull always comes off as kind of smug, which ain't like a masked crimefighter. It worked for him to play Mandrake though: Mandrake should be smug.

New Adventures of Tarzan turned out to be pretty lethargic, although Bruce Bennett was definitely in there swinging (no pun). Having the last chapter be the recap did seem excessively weird.

Moving along, I’m 3 chapters into “Ace Drummond” (please leave singing jokes outside the tavern doors).

Universals have always been my favorites, there’s a nice 30’s biplane ambiance, Jean Rogers is great as always, John King is stalwart…

But there isn’t much suspense when you know Ace is simply going to walk away from each chapter-ending air crash no matter how bad it is. (I think you Green Hornet viewers will discover the same problem.)

But wait! Now, at the end of Chapter 3 he’s being crushed to death by a moving wall! How can he possibly walk away from this one!

And hey! Do you suppose Guy Bates Post could have been the Phantom's father??!!

Just finished Fighting With Kit Carson. Noah Berry, Sr. gives Charles Middleton a run for his money with this one, cackling evilly and proclaiming himself to be the most powerful man in West....just as soon as he finds that hidden gold of course. Probably his best performance in a serial.

Watched The Green Hornet chapter 5 last night... So, Britt Reid and Mike Axford are at a wrecking yard, and somebody tosses a MOTORCYCLE off a ROOF at them, barely missing them.

Reid to Mike: "It was an accident."

Another near fall-off-the-chair moment with Green Hornet: When the next chapter title is revealed to be "Panic at the Zoo!" The episode itself manages to work in an impressive amount of stock footage, some of which looks like a period film about the Mardi Gras.

Question for the more knowledgeable: Under the Flash Gordon-style recaps, there's a trucking shot through a very elaborate miniature of New York. Since it looks more expensive than anything else in the whole serial, it must have come from some feature. Can anybody identify?

I am watching HEROES OF THE WEST (Universal 1932) Thanks, Rodney, and am really enjoying it. One of the top four pre- FLASH GORDON Universals. Onslow Stevens is not that great a hero, but it has so much else going for it.

Seven chapters into The Desert Hawk, and am having a great time. Sometimes, I find myself getting distracted while watching a serial and spending the next two chapters wondering what the heck is happening.

That hasn't happened yet with this one. It's a real gem.

I get distracted that way. Sometimes I have to watch an episode over to get the gist of it. Another reason I watch serials less often. Truth is, unless I really like a movie I have a hard time concentrating unless somebody else is watching too. Some Bs just barely hold my attention now. Sign of old age I guess. My mind tends to dwell on the past and disregard the present.

I just finished HEROES OF THE WEST, and as I said earlier, really liked it. Last night I started GREAT ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN KIDD. It is pretty good for a late Columbia, but has the most anemic sword fights ever.

I'm ready to watch the last chapter of The Green Hornet. I'll probably watch The Green Hornet Strikes Again next even though I'm not a big fan of watching similar serials back to back.
