I saw Heroes of the West about 5 years ago and while I remember liking it, couldn't remember a thing about it except that Onslow Stevens and Noah Beery Jr. were it. And it had a lot of stock footage of Indian raids. The plot had something to do with a train.

Watching it again, I'm finished chapter five and while it does have a lot of action, it's repetitive enough and the plot is slow-moving enough that I will probably forget most of it in another five years.

Just started The Hornet. It sure is more enjoyable when you can actually see what's happening. Great job, VCI!

To crush Eric Stedman into pickle juice, Mr. G. -- and all my labors are finally paying off. Yes, I admit it: I, Paul Panzer, am the mysterious force behind Dr. Grood's downfall, and soon I, not he, shall rule the world!!!

Never, ever mess with a Panzer.

Damn, and all this time I thought Panzer was a decent sort of chap. :'(

Oh, as supervillains go I'm less obnoxious than that scumwad The Joker, for instance -- and surely any pinhead would prefer me to Doctor Grood as a world-ruler. I promise you one thing: I'm just as qualified as he is.

Well, we know Eric is a liar, and his board isn't "Gravy free". As I recall, he took something I wrote him several years ago, something along the lines of "The Serial Squadron's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE is the best one out there, and you ruined it by adding music and effects" and - as a few years laters, when VCI released a vastly superior version, he stuck "The Serial Squadron's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE is the best one out there!" - Laughing Gravy on his site. *LOL* What an asshole.

I was really put out by the the additions to THE PHANTOM EMPIRE, and will never bother watching it again. Someone posted the question asking who has the best copy, and I answered, VCI (which I very highly recommend) and Grood almost had a seizure and pointed out how much restoration work he did on his copy to improve it.

There are faults in the print he used that COULDN'T be fixed. VCI's version is much better.

Eric has two claims to fame: his versions of Gang Busters and Zorro's Black Whip, the two he didn't "improve". VCI will eventually blow both of 'em out of the water. Let's face it, folks: Eric alters old movies so he can copyright them. He wants to be the king of serials, and we are the pawns in his game. The only way we can keep him from winning is to avoid his site, patronize his competitors and start our own serial festivals. He doesn't deserve our support or respect, so it should be easy.

Eric did improve it a lot! Unfortunately, he couldn't leave it at that. I hated the additions he made to TPE too, but I thought no else would ever bother with upgrading a serial besides Eric, so I bought it anyway. Boy, did I get fooled!

Grood did release many more serials than those two Panzer mentioned, where he didn't mess with them, like HOLT OF THE SECRET SERVICE, ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION, and TAILSPIN TOMMY IN THE GREAT AIR MYSTERY. He put in a lot of work replacing music and sound effects, and adding subtitles to footage of KING OF THE MOUNTIES where the sound was missing. I totally praise Grood for that work.

I forgot Tailspin Tommy, but I didn't think the others were any better than the VHS versions, which I see no reason to replace. My point about Grood remains the same. He's trying to rule the serial world, but he sat on his sceptre, it went up his heck, and came out I won't say where.

As I recall, his Fighting Marines was pretty good, but I hated the serial and couldn't get through it.

What are we doing being fair to the jerk? He's never made any secret of his contempt for us.
