On VCI's The Phantom Empire, the special feature Cliff did, he talks about misguided attempts to restore the serial with additions of color and background music. Is he referring to the Squadron version?

What are we doing being fair to the jerk? He's never made any secret of his contempt for us.
I don't know. I don't know anything. I'm just a vicious video pirate, ruining the enjoyment of serials for all of humankind.

Regarding the Phantom Empire- I hear there is a restored/remastered version in the works that improves it one thousand percent-- they simply insert the Flash Gordon Serial in it's place.

Without giving it away, let me just say that the resolution to chapter 8's cliffhanger in The Desert Hawk is one of the worst cheats that I've ever seen and is a real stain on what, otherwise, has been an extremely enjoyable serial.

In Desert Hawk, really enjoyed the dual performances by Gilbert Roland. A cut above the usual serial leads.

If you follow inthebalcony on Twitter you've read this already, but consider it a recap chapter...

Man walks into a coffee shop in ch. 7 of The Green Hornet and says to the waitress, "Gimme anything thata's cold."

Just started Law of the Wild. So far, Bob Custer isn't the most dynamic of actors and Ben Turpin isn't half as funny as Nat Levine seems to think. Four chapters in and Rinty's been either shot or knocked out with a gun butt in every one of them. I think I'm starting to see a trend with this one.

Hey, Todd, I'm watching that one too and am at about the same place. I think any serial where your two top-billed stars walk on four legs is an indication that there may be problems. I watched "The Adventures of Rex and Rinty" before this one and the plot is basically the same, how to get Rex away from his rightful owner. In Rex and Rinty, it's to make Rex a great polo pony; in this one it's to make him a great race horse. I think Turpin was definitely on the downhill side of his career by the time he made this one.

LAW OF THE WILD has always been one of my least favorite Mascots. Bob Custer can't act and it has a story line of little interest. The first couple of chapters have good cliffhangers, but after that not much of interest. After such a ho hum serial, Mascot did almost the same thing the next year with ADVENTURES OF REX AND RINTY.

Finished Law of the Wild and have to concur with Pa's assessment. A weak leading man and an uninteresting plot. A big problem for me was that a vital piece of evidence get destroyed in Chapter 4 but turns up in Chapter 10 with no explanation. On the other hand I did find Adventures of Rex and Rinty to be more enjoyable. The island of Sujan added a nice bit of exotic mysticism to a pedestrian storyline, while Kane Richmond was a good strong leading man and Smiley Burnette a much better comedy relief sidekick than Bob Custer and Ben Turpin.

I can't agree more about Bob Custer - I kept praying that Rinty would rip his throat out and the serial could continue without him.

After going weeks without watching any serials, I plowed through the first 6 chapters of The Ghost of Zorro last week. Starring the geometrically jawed Clayton Moore, it's one of the more pedestrian Republic's, at least so far. The cliff-hangers have been very routine, wagon flies over the edge of a cliff, a couple of explosions...oh my!

There's still enough action to keep it interesting, and that Republic stunt team is always working overtime.

I'm presently watching King of the Congo the 1952 Buster Crabbe serial for the review next Sunday over at the Serial Family Chat Room. It could be better but hey!! It's a Jungle Sam Katzman Production so you know in advance not to expect much.

Say, the fabulous DVD called "Mystery Men of the Movies" - which features a documentary written by moi all about funnybook heroes of the 1930s - 1940s adapted to the big screen - is on-sale now at the AC Comics website. You're welcome. http://accomics.com/accomics/dvds/serials.html

I am in chapter eight of VCI's DRUMS OF FU MANCHU. It is the best print out there for one of the top two serials in the sound era. The other one is FLASH GORDON.
