I'm watching Mystery of the Riverboat. In the last two chapters I have watched we have a car fall off a cliff and another car go rolling down a several blocks long hill in the local town. Now this serial is supposed to be taking place somewhere in Cajun Louisiana. Anyone who knows that part of the world knows that the land there is flat as a pancake and barely above sea level. You're hard pressed to find low small hills (other than man-made levees) otherwise cliffs and many blocks long downhill streets. I guess serial writers never checked basic geography, even in the U.S. |

I've always found it interesting for a serial called Mystery of the Riverboat, that the boat of the title all but disappears from the story after Chapter Seven. |

I just watched Chapter 8 yesterday and the boat was very much there. Of course it's clearly a different smaller boat because the stock footage Universal needed for a boat in a raging river used a different boat model. It looks like the boat will be prominent at the beginning of Chapter 9 at least if not beyond that. |

Many years ago a serial fan whom I was friends with remarked, "The biggest mystery of MYSTERY OF THE RIVERBOAT is why they bothered to make it." Problem was he didn't see it. when I finally had an opportunity to see it, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise for me. I also noticed the inappropriate terrain for Louisiana. Right now I am watching PERILS OF THE WILDERNESS, the next to last serial ever made. After seven chapters, I'm still not sure what the plot is.So far every cliffhanger has been stock from PERILS OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED. There is a 30's style plane flying over an Indian village and a loudspeaker orders them to attack railroad camps and covered wagons. No, I'm not making this up, gang. Indians attacks and an airplane in the same film. |

Nope. Stock footage from Perils of the Wilderness and Mysterious Pilot with a framing plot that rambles and makes no sense. I remember multiple chapters of undercover lawman Dennis Moore spying on the bad guys at their "secret hideout" to find out their plans. Moore then smiles and goes off to thwart them. I guess he didn't think to just arrest the evildoers. |

Even though Dennis Moore as Laramie is supposed to be the hero and gets top billing, because of massive stock footage from PERILS OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED, Richard Emory as the mountie hero is in the cliffhangers. Stanley Price who played henchman Cragg passed away July 13, 1955, but the serial was not released until January 6, 1956, almost six months later. I wonder why there was such a delay? |

I am three chapters into Flash Gordon, and it's pretty great. Certainly unlike any serial I've seen before. It just has a fantastic look and feel to it. A real treat. |

Because after Adventures of Captain Africa, they re-released The Sea Hound, and then Perils of the Wilderness. Edited by John Doe, Oct 9 2009, 04:19 AM.

Just finished the first two chapters of Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock. So far this serial is excellent... far better than I expected... great action and stunting, nice dual story line and good action. Print from Rodney is pretty good. If the rest of this serial holds to stature of the first couple of chapters, I may want to get an upgraded print, if there is such a thing. |

I later figured it was something like that. But that is sure a long time to be sitting on an investment without having any return. Republic suddenly had a delay like that in their late 40's serials. |

Flash Gordon -- the first one -- definitely stands alone. Along with the extravagant visuals and non-standard story, it may be the only serial with serious sex in the plot. Flash is intensely territorial about Dale from their first meeting; Ming and King Vulcan both lust after the earth blonde; Ming's daughter Aura is very pre-code about her interest in Flash; and poor Prince Barin has a crush on Aura. Plus, everybody except Ming shows a lot of skin -- even Dr. Zarkov wears hot pants. Compare that to any other serial, where the hero just knows that the Funny Fellow Who Doesn't Shave* has to be rescued. *George of the Jungle's nickname for his mate, Ursula. |

I completely agree. I've told this story before, but for those of you who weren't Serial Squadronaries, I'll repeat it. I took Flash to the grandkids when the boy was five and the oldest girl was three. I turned it on and watched the first chapter with them, but then duty called from the kitchen. They begged me to leave it on so I did. When I came back to the room they were both stripped to their underpants, dueling. It was a real belly laugh. |
