I think Bailey worked in radio most of his career?
It's possible that you're confusing Richard Bailey with Bob Bailey who did Yours Truly Johnny Dollar on radio in the mid 50's, which is a damn fine radio program.

Around 1972, the Classic Cinema in Southampton, England presented an all night show of "Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe", & "Zorro's Black Whip".

Some weeks before, there had been a 5 movie all night horror show, & a rotund, beaming manager had appeared during the proceedings to express his delight at the success of the show, & the fact that someone had remarked it was the first time they had seen him smile in months!

An attempt had been made to edit out the title sequences of "Zorro's Black Whip" with limited success, so that certain parts were repeated as the episodes turned, raising hoots of laughter from the rather uncouth crowd!

Suddenly, the film stopped, the house lights came up, & a furious red-faced manager appeared berating the audience with:

"We spent hours editing this film for you, & all you can do is laugh"!.

We tried to contain our giggles like naughty school children!

The film resumed, and the same thing happened - raucous merriment at Chapter breaks as The Black Whip would gallop a few hundred yards, & then make the same journey again for good measure!

The film stopped, the lights came on, & a livid manager vowed never to put such a show on again!

And he never did!

Happy days! :D

I watched the first three chapters of 1949's King of the Rocketmen (I haven't seen it in years) from the recently released 1940's Action Set. The quality of the print is decent if unspectacular. Lots of quality screen time for the serials' most famous flying mannequin! One real quality shot has it zooming right towards the lens. It looks a lot better than any of the animated flying Superman sequences ever did.

Jeff King (played by the lumberjack tough but timber-acting Tristram Coffin) uses his experimental rocket suit (complete with up and down control knobs) to battle the mysterious (i.e. guess his identity from a list of the usual suspects) Dr. Vulcan. Overall nice action, as one would expect from republic.

I'm about halfway through The Galloping Ghost. Surprised at how many interesting camera set ups Breezy uses, low angle shots looking upwards, over the shoulder shots from the back of cars. They must have let him have more time to make this one than usual due to the popularity of football star Grange.

It is a well-directed and unusual serial in many ways -- one of the good Mascots.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

Agree with both of you on GALLOPING GHOST. In 1931 Mascot made three winners in a row, some of their best serials, THE GALLOPING GHOST, THE VANSHING LEGION, and LIGHTNING WARRIOR. A long time ago I heard that Restored Serials was supposed to be working on LIGHTNING WARRIOR, and had access to a complete print of chapter one. Every print I have seen is missing the last five minutes of chapter one. Same story with chapter one of BURN EM UP BARNES. Anyone know of complete prints of these?

I'm about 5 chapters into Flaming Frontiers with Johnny Mac Brown. He's a very likeable guy and an enjoyable western hero. He goes up against some ornery cayuses in this one.

What surprised me is that much of this western was presumably filmed underwater. Oh wait - that's my Alpha Video print :X

Up to chapter 10 of Universal's Phantom Creeps. One of the worst serials I've seen. Very little action, talky, meandering plot, weak cliffhangers and one of serialdom's worst henchmen in Monk. The sole saving grace is a fine performance by Bela Lugosi. He really puts the "mad" in the mad scientist Dr. Zorka.

I recently finished the last Universal serial, THE MYSTERIOUS MR. M, which is a lot better than it has any right to be. Not great by any measure, mind you, but better than one could reasonably expect.

Right now I'm watching what's left (about half) of a 1928 Pathe silent, EAGLE OF THE NIGHT. It's really a shame this turkey is the only Pathe from this period that's generally available, because it's definitely not representative of the company's serial output -- even given the fact that Pathe quality had slipped considerably by this time. EAGLE was an independent production picked up by the company for distribution, and it's a real cheapie. Aside from substandard production values it suffers from a malnourished script, which results in padding so egregious it eventually makes your teeth hurt. One of the chapters has a shot -- following leading man Frank Clarke (a real-life stunt pilot) as he comes in for a landing and taxis up the field -- that runs a full 70 seconds. Now that's what I call padding.
