I've gotta be the only person who ever liked the last Shadow movie, so I expect to be happy however it comes out. |

I finished up Flash Gordon the other day, which as I'm sure you all expect, I felt to be EXCELLENT. Now, I've moved on to Jesse James Rides Again, which appears to be pleasant enough, if kind of run of the mill. The movie party crowd is watching Zorro's Fighting Legion, which they feel is pretty confusing, though they like the concept of the serial. Maybe I need a better print of this. I'm showing the Alpha version, which isn't very good, and may lend to folks having a hard time figuring out who the good guys are. |

One element of ZFL that didn't work for me and added to the confusion is that almost everyone on the Council was evil. At the end of the day, there is no real drama as to who is really Don Del Oro. Since they're all bad guys anyway, it doesn't really matter. |

In Batman and Robin, Vicky Vale has a dodgy brother called Jimmy Vale who works for the Wizard - in Batman's Last Chance, Vale comes across a poleaxed Batman and lifts his mask and recognises Bruce Wayne - that's never happened before in any of the movies or HAS it?

I liked it enought, too, Mr P. Definitely not the pulpy Shadow we would prefer, but not the worst movie based on a pulp hero, either. That dubious honor goes to the Doc Savage flick. BT is right, though, that the line is very fine between DARK KNIGHT and CATWOMAN. Uslan has walked both sides. |

Just watched Robin's Roose (Americans talk funny - it's ROOZE! ) on Batman and Robin - next week Robin Rides the Wind - I wonder how he does THAT!

I just finished watching Republic's 1947 Jesse James Rides Again out of the Classic 40's Action Set (Cheesy Flicks). Western serials are never my favorites, which is odd since I love B-Westerns, but there you have it. This one features a serial all-star cast with an unmasked Clayton Moore as Jesse, Linda Stirling as the girl and Roy Barcroft as the...well, you know. Above average action if nothing terribly original. I was never bored and I enjoy watching Clayton sans the face covering. The voice is so familiar, but it's still a little jarring to see it attached to a head of wavy hair. The print condition was decent. Some speckling and the blacks are muddy grey, but very watchable. For the price this was a good set. |

Watching this you kind of wonder, did the Lone ranger wear a mask because he wasn't really a former Texas Ranger -- he was the former Jesse James?! |

What a weird coincidence, Sarge. When I was a kid I actually believed that. |

I have both Jesse James Rides Again and King of the Rocketmen, from Cheezy Flicks and found both to be highly watchable and enjoyable. |

Watched the first episode of The Adventures of Captain Africa - quite simply, the shoddiest excuse for a serial I've ever writhed through. Stock footage of a cantina and then cuts to 2 guys sitting at a table (with a bare wall behind them), lit differently and with no effort whatsoever to match the stock, discussing the plot of the movie we're not watching. What crap. No entertainment, even for laughs. |

LG, You've got to admit though that Bud Osbourne does look a lot like Frank Buck. Your right this one is pretty dismal considering it started out as a Phantom serial until Jungle Sam Katzman forgot to check to see if Columbia still retained the rights to the character. When they found out that they didn't have the rights they had to reshoot all of John Hart's scenes which is probably why Rick Vallin's role was increased utilizing a lot of stock footage from The Desert Hawk. One wonders how the serial would have turned out had it been a Phantom serial rather than the mishmash of stock footage called Captain Africa. Barcroft |

LG, There is a picture of Rick Vallin dressed in the Desert Hawk outfit talking to Spencer Bennett in one of Alan Barbour's serial books discussing a scene: "Rick, for your next big scene just ride around this here rock and look intense". Can you imagine the serial actors working in the 50's trying to make sense of what they were supposed to be doing? Take a look at Blazing the Overland Trail and you will see little snickers between Lee Roberts and Dennis Moore that just can't be helped. Barcroft |

"Little snickers that can't be helped" is a good description of what I love about serials. |
