Hey Gravy, you have 14 more chapters to go, and it doesn't improve. Have fun. Like I said elsewhere, I would still rather watch a late Columbia, than many of their mid 40's serials like CHICK CARTER DETECTIVE or HOP HARRIGAN.

Agreed. At least the late ones from the '50s like Mysterious Island and Captain Video have that incredible plot silliness and ridiculous dialog that makes them amusing. I can't think of anything that makes Chick Carter interesting.

I haven't watched any serials (save Mysterious Doctor Satan with the FNF gang) in a long time; I've been watching those Warner Archive shorts and features instead. I am finally getting around to finishing The Green Hornet and was looking for one other serial to rotate with it once a week; dunno if Captain Africa is gonna be that one serial or not. I have a lot of Universal westerns from the '30s I haven't watched yet, but I think I've seen all the Republics now and I don't have any '50s Columbias.

I would certainly pick Johnny Mack Brown over Captain Africa anytime

Me too. Even though it would mean seeing the same Indian get shot from his horse 15 times in as many chapters.

That's the same Indian??? I thought it was in the "Attacking Indians Union Contract" they all had to throw their arms into the air and fall off the left side of the horse. hmmmmm.

You could always finish Mysterious Island.

JMB is one of my top five B-western heroes.

Of course, that Indian doesn't get shot is every chapter, but he gets shot more than once(!) in those where he does. It probably does average out to once per chapter.

I always liked Johnny Mack Brown's amiable likability. I'm watching Wild West Days and JMB is one of serialdom's most unflappable heroes. When he and the heroine are captured by Indians who plan to burn them at the stake, Johnny just smiles at her and says not to worry because he's sure their friends will save them. Wotta guy!

I watched the first chapter of The Phantom (VCI print) yesterday. The only other glimpses I've had of this serial came years ago from trying to watch a terribly muddied, bootleg VHS. It was so dark that any action was undiscernable. My eyes hurt from squinting to try to make out any detail while pressing my face to the screen. I gave up and tossed the tape after a few frusrating chapters. Needless to say that after that debacle any print would look glorious, and this one does.

I enjoyed the costumes (the Phantom actually looks like the Phantom!) and even the native costumes seemed better detailed than most. I don't know if the action and quality will hold up through all 15 chapters, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

I found THE PHANTOM to be a solid, if not spectacular, serial, CL. It is fairly faithful to the source material (from what I kniow of it) and the VCI DVD is a decent transfer. Enjoy!

I watched Burn 'Em Up Barnes for the first time a couple days ago and really enjoyed it. Miles ahead of the last Masot I had watched (Last of the Mohicans). I noticed in chapter 3 of Burn 'Em Up there is a quick shot of the actual outside of the Consolidated Films building. The address on the facade was "6363". I did some checking and Consolidated had several locations in LA at the time - one was at 6363 Santa Monica Blvd.

I just started on Miracle Rider with Tom Mix and have only seen the first half hour. I am very impressed with the quality of the image (VCI's dvd) and the production values too. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it.

Scouts to the Rescue - Not great but so far seems to be a decent Universal Production - It might be the only one that used the glass globe as an intro. Jackie Cooper is good in his role and the VCI print is good.

I love about half of the Mascots, and you just named two of 'em; I just wish we had a DVD of Burn 'Em Up Barnes as good as the VCI Miracle Rider, which is one candidate for best 'Thirties serial DVD ever.
