The Alpha DVD isn't all that bad - is there another version available that's better??

I love about half of the Mascots, and you just named two of 'em; I just wish we had a DVD of Burn 'Em Up Barnes as good as the VCI Miracle Rider, which is one candidate for best 'Thirties serial DVD ever.

Love the Mascot serials, too, with BURN 'EM UP BARNES a particular favourite. Yes, a DVD release of the calibre of VCI's MIRACLE RIDER would be quite welcome.

Amazon is offering a MOD of Mascot prodcut that includes BURN 'EM UP BARNES.

Can't speak to the quality, however. If anyone else takes the plunge, please report back here as to the quality of the release.

Here is the link:

I haven't watched it yet, but I've heard that the Roan DVD of Mascot's Three Musketeers has a really good image quality.

Yes, it does.

That "Burn 'Em Up, Barnes" MOD may be the silent movie and not the serial. Does anyone know?

It is the featurized version of the serial.

Burn 'em Up may be my fave Mascot, too, although I DO love The Galloping Ghost.

I seem to be alone in not particularly caring for "Barnes". The whole idea of building it around the attempt to take over an unimportant trucking company just isn't grand enough for a serial for my tastes.

Thanks, LG, I must have missed that on the Amazon listing.

No, BURN 'EM UP BARNES does not have the strongest serial plot going for it. What it does have are two enthusiastic leads, who inject a ton of joy into this chapterplay.

I will be the first to admit that this serial won me over on the strength of its charms.

Same here, Sarge. Prior to BUB, I had only seen Jack in THE CLUTCHING HAND and was not impressed. Since BUB, I have seen him in over a dozen things (from starring roles to bit parts) and he always brings the charm to the proceedings.

Just learned this myself a few days ago: Manufactured-On-Demand

Warner Archive started a trend I think.

I finished The Phantom last night and found that I really enjoyed it overall. Like many 15 chapter serials it would have benefitted from tightening the story and streamlining to 12 chapters, but it still maintained interest.

The groups struggle throughout the plot to assemble the seven "keys" that will create a map to the secret treasure (surprise!). The Phantom gets to wrestle a gorilla, dodge tigers and escape countless diabolical traps. What else could you ask for? Tom Tyler has the physique to pull off the hero image, and his acting is adequate enough as to not embarrass the character.

One thing that stood out to me was the the photography seemed overly claustrphobic for a "jungle epic". Lots of tight shots carefully planned to avoid showing any excessive background. I assume this was done for budgetary reasons so that they didn't have to dress any more of the set with jungle foliage than necessary. Also, the group shots of native villagers didn't have to have as many extras to fill the screen. maybe it was just me, but this seemed more apparent than in most serials I've seen.
