Lucky you, Rodney. One of the few serials with good dialogue, much of it seemingly improvised by Jones; in any case, the good stuff all comes out of his mouth. |

I just finished WINNERS OF THE WEST. I watched it years ago, and didn't care much for it, but for some reason I enjoyed it a lot more this time. Watching how the heroine (Anne Nagel) acted most of the time, I was hoping Dick Foran would put her over his knee and give her a well deserved spanking. |

I finished Les Vampires last night. The serial clocks in at almost 7 hours all together. The last chapter alone was 58 minutes. But I would give it a very big thumbs up! You'll rarely encounter a criminal group more ruthless than these Vampires. Considering that this was made in 1915 I was very pleased with the quality throughout. |

Back when the dinosaurs and I roamed the streets of Manhattan, Les Vampires was shown complete in one day at the New York Film Festival. About half of the audience gave up, but the rest of us stumbled bleary eyed into the night after 4 hours of movie, a dinner break, and then 3 more hours. Seeing it on the big screen was a tremendous thrill. As I've said many times, silents don't work nearly as well on TV as talkies do, especially older silents like this one. Directors didn't yet know how to telegraph their effects, so a lot of small details get lost on the small screen. It's amazing how a silent that doesn't begin to work on TV, like Chaplin's "Kid Auto Races at Venice," comes to life on the big screen with a appreciative audience. |

I enjoyed WINNERS OF THE WEST, too, Pa. A solid western serial. Which is making my viewing of RIDING WITH BUFFALO BILL that much harder to get through.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, CL. Oh, to have more silent serials available! Edited by The Batman, Mar 19 2010, 11:31 AM.

RIDING WITH BUFFALO BILL is composed of massiv stock footage from DEADWOOD DICK and a few shots from VALLEY OF VANISHING MEN, but the one thing it does have going for it is that it was directed by Spencer Bennet , who keeps things moving pretty well. There are several Columbia's like JUNGLE MENACE, HOP HARRIGAN, and CHICK CARTER DETECTIVE that are a lot harder to sit through than this one. BTW Batman, I know a friend of yours, some ugly guy named Chuck White. |

Just received from Trev Scott his upgraded Buck Jones serial "Gordon of Ghost City" and I must admit its a beautiful print. Have already watched 3 chapters. I had Fred Shays copy which I purchased in the early 90's and transferred it to DVD and was pretty happy but Trev's copy is pristine. If you are looking to upgrade your copy this is the one to pickup. Barcroft |

Just finished The Devil Horse. I got a big kick out of Frankie Darro's tree branch swinging, sage brush Tarzan inspired character, The Wild Boy. He even had his own special and distinctive horse whinny to call The Devil Horse when he was in danger and needed rescued. |
