It is another of those fearless pilot serials that seemed to have been so popular in the '30s. At least, I assume they were popular, since so many were made. I guess it was quite a thrill for a 10-year-old to see all the stunt flying, wing walking and other aerial carryings-on in these serials.
According to Harmon and Glut, flying was still an exotic and dangerous adventure in the early thirties, and pilots were true daredevil heroes, taking their life into their own hands whenever they went up.

We also never find out why the antigravity compound requires a plane. Couldn't anything be made to fly with it?
In 1933 -- and with a special effects budget of around $0.95 -- we are luck they could get the air planes to fly. Anything else would have sent them way over budget. You just can't get good stock footage of flying autos.

Just watched the first chapter of Batman (1943) - The Electrical Brain - will watch Chapter 2 - The Bat's Cave - Saturday morning!

Andy, when your done the serial, tell me that Croft is not the Robin to beat!

:D I'm not sure what you mean, but he seems OK to me.

Lewis Wilson seems very nimble in his civvies running about and there's an amusing scene with posh Alfred the Butler in The Bat's Cave.

It finishes all of a sudden - Sony must have lost the bit where the narrator invites the audience back next week! :(

I just finished watching 1962's kid-vid British serial Masters of Venus. With only 8 chapters running about 15 minutes a piece this was a quick watch over 3 evenings.

A brother and sister combo end up accidentally launched in a rocket to Venus along with two unconscious astronauts. The plot involves deadly six fingered Venusians (demonstrated with a sixth floppy finger added on to the gloves that they always wear). Ray guns, rockets and evil aliens that speak perfect English, a winning combination. The budget and quality are similar to a Doctor Who episode that would have been produced at the same time. An interesting change of pace from more traditional serials. No great shakes, but a diverting curiousity.

Red Rider is just one of those serials to me.....you know the kind, the sort of serial that people rave about, but you just don't get. I have tried to watch this thing three times during my serial viewing days and have just never gotten past chapter 5. The regularity that I watch serials in grinds to a halt with this thing, and I always find something else to do....sometimes things as exciting as taking the recycling out, or swiffering the floor.

I gave up. Starting G-Men Never Forget today. A serial that isn't as well liked, but most certainly will be in my house.

Watched Monarch of the Moon over the weekend. It's a serial homage/ spoof from Dark Horse. Runs six chapters over 90 minutes, and is very much like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, black and white footage with all special effects and most back drops done with CGI. Plot is set during World War Two and involves an American Super Soldier named Yellow Jacket, who has the power to control bees, discovering that the war with Germany and Japan is really being engineered by a fascist dictator from the moon who is softening up America's defenses for a planned invasion of Earth. Has some good action scenes that are undermined by static dialog scenes that go on way to long and a condescendingly comedic tone over all.

I watched Monarch of the Moon about 6 months ago. After having heard some positives about the serial homage I came away distinctly underwhelmed. There were some amusing ideas, but overall I found it tried a little too hard and delivered too little. A bit too smug for its own good.

I've watched Monarch of the Moon several times and like it quite a bit. However I would agree it can be a little too smug for its own good. What I find best is the other feature Destination Mars!. It is a takeoff on Plan Nine From Outer Space and is told with more affection for the source material than Monarch of the Moon.

Batman (1943) has TWO costumes - a light one and a dark one - once he seemed to change from one to another in astounding time - 'sgotta be a lighting thang! :D

Half-way through KING OF THE CARNIVAL and enjoying it much more than I was led to believe I would. A solid, if not spectacular Republic serial outing.

Well, that's good news. Having a new Republic to watch wouldn't break my heart.

I am also watching KING OF THE CARNIVAL for Sunday's chat, and it is a lot better than most fans give it credit for. There are several 50's Republic's that are a lot weaker than this. A big plus for me is I have been a big Harry Lauter fan for many years.

I'm also watching King of the Carnival and I'm up to chapter 6. With Harry Lauter and Rick Vallin in it I'm enjoying watching it again. The only sad part is this was the last Republic. Columbia would keep it going for one more year with 2 serials: 1 bad and the final one fair.
