I didn't realize KING OF THE CARNIVAL was the last Republic serial. IMHO, not a bad way to go out. A solid entyr, considering the genre was on the decline and pretty much dead.

Bats,
I saw King of the Carnival at the Redwing Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland, back farther than I care to remember, but only a couple of chapters not knowing that this was the last Republic Serial. I later saw it all on TV when Channel 4 in Washington, D.C. use to show serials on Saturdays. A wave of nostalgia must have come over me!!!!!!!!! or Oldtimer's Disease.

Barcroft,

That's one thing I do envy, you guys that actually had the chance to see actual serial chapters in a movie theatre.

And it was nostalgia, you're not old, just vintage.

Not to go nyaa, nyaa or anything, but I saw Undersea Kingdom in the theater as well as the feature-length Flash Gordons. None of 'em were first-run though. I'm not that ancient.

The only serial I actually remember seeing chapters of in a theater was "Captain Video". I know I saw some chapters from other serials, I just don't remember any of them. I think I remember Video because I was older and the tintiing probably made it memorable.

The ones I really remember were the same ones Barcroft remembers seeing on Channel 4 in Washington. All my friends and I watched "Fighting Devil Dogs", "Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island" and other Republics shown on Channel 4. Those early days of TV when Saturdays were devoted to kids and all sorts of syndicated shows appeared probably shaped a lot of my movie preferences for life. The serials, the westerns, etc.

Batman, I actually saw a couple of chapters from one of your serials on the big screen when I was knee-high to an usher. I think I've mentioned I had to wait fifty-some years to discover how you escaped from the shrinking room with the spiked walls. I saw some other Republic chapters too, but never an entire serial. I didn't get to go every week.

Most of you guys know that I supplied VCI with the MIRACLE RIDER master, and I supervised the transfer from a pristine 16mm optical reduction print struck from the 35mm camera negative in the early TV era. I've spoken to several buffs who were convinced that MR came from a 35mm print. Just goes to show how good a perfectly timed printdown can look when it's properly transferred. It's a shame more Mascots don't survive in prints like that one. The negatives were abominably treated and even in the Fifties, when they were first released to TV, several of the Mascots looked like crap. One of them was THE LIGHTNING WARRIOR, the negative of which is shot through with dupe footage -- some of it only a few frames long -- copied from what appears to be an old 16mm rental-library print. Whenever the scene switches from original footage to dupe, the difference in quality is startling. It might not look so bad on a 27- or 35-inch TV, but when projected in 16mm on an eight-foot screen it was pretty damn jarring.

Since VCI has turned up great Filmcraft material for BUCK ROGERS, I have high hopes for their upcoming RED BARRY. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.

Well, I AM ancient (I guess). I saw MANY serials in theatres. Actually, I should say I saw PARTS of serials. I don't know anyone who ever saw a complete serial. There were birthdays, vacations, illnesses, etc.

The first serial which I viewed, at the Lido theatre, was SON OF THE GUARDSMAN. Never re-saw it as an adult.... but loved it as a kid. Some day would like to see it again..... if only for Charles King as an English lord (boggles the mind). The next serial was a re-release of JUNGLE GIRL. That was followed by G-MEN NEVER FORGET & SON OF ZORRO. but fergawd's sake, don't let me list every one I ever saw.

However, when you went on vacation, you might end up in a town that was showing a serial that never made it to your home town. Serials that I saw a single chapter of included JACK ARMSTRONG, THE SCARLET HORSEMAN & LOST CITY OF THE JUNGLE.

Did I mention that I waited fifty-some freaking years in that room for you to see me get out? ^o) ;)

A great non-sequitur, if you ask me, RR.

As a fan of the Mascot serials, I quite enjoyed VCI's print of MIRACLE RIDER and I didn't know you supplied it to them, so thank you very much.

I, too, wish more Mascots were available in that condition.

I watched the first two chapters of Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars. Buster Crabbe and the sparkler powered spaceships are at it again. I haven't seen this in probably two decades, so I'm looking forward to enjoying it all over again.
