Over halfway through Scouts to the Rescue right now. It is a pretty good serial. I was a little dubious at first considering the mixing of Indians and gangsters, but it's done pretty well. Love how everybody keeps referring to the Indians as weird looking. William Ruhl makes a surprisingly good hero, having mostly seen him play villains I was un prepared for how effectively he cold play a nice guy. Plus he has a snazzy looking toupee, which I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen Red Barry first. The mountain scenery is some of the best I've ever seen, it rivals the forest in Hawk of the Wilderness for the most visually striking exteriors. And yeah that knot tying contest mentioned earlier is funny. At the end the bad guy has to cut himself loose. |

Oh yeah, in Red Barry Ruhl has only about ten hairs swirled around on top of his head with a lot of space in front and back of it. Which is okay, a balding villain is fine, but a balding hero, no way, slap a wig on him. |

This is just a quick note about my gratis offer of Gordon of Ghost City I have had several PMs requesting same .. But a number of requests are not addressing the two conditions under which the offer was made, namely: One must explicitly agree to both of the following: 1. Not to copy the DVD (except for one's own archive purposes) nor allow it to be copied 2. To advise when the DVD has been received Until I get an agreement to these terms within the PM, then provision of the serial is just not possible As indicated in my earlier message: "please feel free to contact me at any time by Personal Message through this Message Board - just agree to both conditions (mentioning both) and provide a postal address - thats all" I have relied to all PMs but it appears that some are not checking their PMs for my reply If you have PM'ed me, then please check out my PM reply to your contact It sets out dispatch dates etc and whether or not you've addressed the criteria (Not an easy post, this one: presently in a Tuscan village without Wi-Fi, anywhere - have resorted to using a local computer - which has a "European keyboard" .... and the keys are "all over the place") Trev |

Just finished Dick Tracy's G-Men. Nicely done, even with the usual WTF moments (newspaper headlines proclaim a few too many plot points, even identifying the villain as a "World Famous Spy."). The final encounter between hero and villain takes an eccentric turn and almost turns into a Twilight Zone or O. Henry story, but they seem to go out of their way to avoid commenting on the irony of the villain's demise. Now it's SOS Coast Guard -- I've had the Roan disc sitting around for years. Chapter one served up a strange cross between fairly earnest Coast Guard practice and loony mad scientist stuff. Also, it seems a bit more ambitious (or they had access to better stock footage) and less aggressively juvenile (but still kind of dumb). |

Cliff, SOS Coast Guard is a pretty decent serial directed by William Witney and Allen James. This is the serial where Witney met hit future wife Maxine Doyle, and he tells a pretty funny story in his book "In a Door, Into a Fight, Out a Door, Into a Chase" about some things he did to her during the filming. At one point she absolutely hated him but he eventually apologized and later took her out to dinner. They were later married and it lasted until her death in 1973. Barcroft |

Cool story, Barcroft. I have always wanted to track down and read a copy of Witney's book. |

The Witney book is quite a lot of fun. He tells stories very well. Too bad he never wrote a follow-up. It would have been nice to know what his career was like when he moved to feature directing after the war and then into television in the '50s. It's still available as a paperback. I just bought a copy a few months ago from Amazon. |
