But that's just it: I don't compare him to Middleton or Barcroft. Why would I? In this extremely silly serial he's perfect. Middleton and Barcroft would ruin it by being too good. Real acting would take the fun out of this item. Besides, can you imagine Roy Barcroft taking that part? 'Course not, only an idjit would.

Last week I watched King of the Carnival as I transferred it on to DVD. You know - as lame as it is, it still didn't bore me. At least it was Republic.

Good points, Panzer. How about James Craven playing the role James Horne style?

Sure, Pa; why not? The "invention" that is the only plot the serial has is so damn silly that you couldn't do much harm if you cast Francis the Talking Mule in the part. Hey, now, there's an idea...

It's hard on us true believers when a serial is so awful, most of all if it's a well-shot-and-edited Republic, but, considering budget and schedule, the real marvel is that there are any good ones.

I may have told this one before: a front office guy came on the great silent director turned schlockmeister William Beaudine's set and asked the director if he couldn't hurry the movie up because a print had to be on the train to New York that Saturday. Beaudine said, "You mean somebody's actually going to watch this thing?" Shows you how much time they spent editing the low-end B's. Republic didn't do that stuff. It's a shame Beaudine didn't work for them. He was a talented guy in the Twenties and his later career could have been a lot better than it was.

Panzer, somewhere I read that one fan's nickname for Price was "The whiner." He might crack you up, but just try and compare him to Middleton or Barcroft, and you will see what I mean.
Colorist, the set contains 37 episodes, so I believe two episodes of CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT are missing. Trev is in here as Lane Carson, his web site is Down Under DVDs. I sent an order, and he mailed it off in one day.

Been watching VCI's copy of Jungle Girl lately. Good, crisp true b/w imaging, and a clear soundtrack. The serial isn't known as a riot of action, but entertaining nonetheless. Frances Gifford is a stone knockout i her little mini-dress.
I don't know if any of you remember, but the prints circulating among us collectors was originally a British print from
the serial's reissue during the late '40s, but there were certain scenes and images edited out, especially from CH. 10's cliffhanger involving her being tied to a stake and menaced by a slowly advancing gorilla. I think they said that her movements were too erotic and sexy for us to handle. Well, they're back in there now, and yes, they ARE erotic and sexy! (Pauses to wipe my brow.)
Where was I? Oh, yes! It's nice to have a more complete print.Plus, as an extra, there about 30 minutes of trailers, mostly Universal.

I have the VCI Jungle Girl, which includes the British censor card, and the gorilla is present and accounted for. Are you saying that the VCI version has or has not the scenes missing from the prints you mentioned?

Have to decide soon what serial to follow G-Men vs. the Black Dragon with. Decided not to go with another Republic right away, so put off Secret Service in Darkest Africa until next season. Sort of leaning to The Green Hornet right now, for obvious reasons.

I got a message recently via something or other that a year ago(!) I was turned town in my request to join "The Serial Family". I have no idea what that is; if I requested to join, I don't recall. I don't know why I was rejected, either... Anybody have a clue what "The Serial Family" is?

Anecdotally, VCI’s Jungle Girl seems to have had a couple of different pressings. The first lacked some of the gorilla scenes, which were subsequently restored.

In the version I have, Chapter 15 still lacks a couple of snippets: Gerald Moore hitting the ground after falling from the aeroplane, and some of the henchmen being speared by the natives.

Since I’m posting, just finished The Master Key from VCI. Not bad; the story is fun but the cliffhanger resolutions are unusually lame even for Universal. The print seems to be an indifferent Commonwealth 16mm reissue.

Gravy, The Serial Family is another board that is used almost exclusively for the chat room for Cliffhanger Productions. I believe you were in the chat room with us a while ago. I will ask what happened.

Colorist, unless VCI added more footage to their JUNGLE GIRL dvd, chapter 15 is missing about a second when Slick Latimer falls from the plane. Originally the shot shows him falling all the way and hits the ground with a splat, in my copy the shot ends right before he hits.

Mine too, Pa. I think also in CH. 10 while Tom Neal is fighting Bud Geary, they may have cut out a kick to the face.

I have this info regarding SS posts made by myself and others on the VCI Jungle Girl:

I believe that VCI has released at least 3 different versions of this serial. I draw this conclusion based on comments on the "Jungle Girl 1941 15 chapters VCI Home Video" message series on the Republic message board. Here are the comments that make me say this:

Version #1 - unrestored:
Dr. Tobor wrote on 4/24/99:
"My VCI copy of JUNGLE GIRL clearly shows the British Lion Republic logo at the beginning of the serial, and in subsequent chapters, though not all. This print was imported from England. The British sensors "cut" some scenes of the serial. They (the sensors) thought they were too "intense" for young children. One scene throughout the serial is very noticeable. The one where the gorilla is breaking into the room after Nyoka. Can you tell something is missing? Watch the beginning of the next chapter to see. Also, when Frank Lackteen (Shamba) gets his in the final chapter. Do you notice something is cut? The critical scene where Shamba is stabbed while sneaking up on the hero has been cut. These are 2 of the scenes known to have been cut from the original. I think the scenes concerning the gorilla breaking into the door were about a minute and a half, maybe a little less. I had a really terrible pd print of this serial for quite sometime, and wish I had kept it after I got this one from VCI, so I could "spot" those scenes. But my pd print was very dark and extremely "scratchy" in places, so it probably wouldn't matter. But, even cut, this is a great adventure, and the print quality of a tape does indeed make the difference."

Version #2 - partly restored:
Buster Crabbe wrote on 4/3/00:
"I have the VCI copy and I do not notice the British Lion Republic logo at the beginning. Also, Shamba's death scene did not seem to be cut on my copy, however, the video quality changed for a second when that scene occurred. The Gorilla scene was cut as you suggested."

Version #3 - all(?) scenes restored:
My copy is as Buster Crabbe describes above, but my copy does have the Gorilla scene spliced back in and you can tell that this is from the other (not the 35mm) source print.

Apparently they restored this one is several steps and just kept releasing a more complete copy as they went along. I feel lucky that I just bought the one that is the most complete so far. I wonder if they are still working on it and restoring any more missing
