Gotta agree with you, Tiger, about Gifford in Jungle Girl; also Carole Landis in Daredevils of the Red Circle! |

I had forgotten about Carole Landis, what a beautiful woman which reminds me of the story William Witney told about her in his book "In a Door, Into a Fight, Out a Door, Into a Chase". While working on Daredevils of the Red Circle Carole refused to wear a Bra and Witney had to explain to her about the Code of Decency and that he would be fired if she didn't wear one. Needless to say she agreed to wear one. Famed gossip columnist Earl Wilson once referred to her as looking like an ornate French bureau with the top drawers open. She Definitely was attractive but ended up committing suicide in the late 40's. Barcroft |

Pretty darn cute is not quite sex, El Tigre. The one truly sexy sound serial (unless your tastes run a little kinky) is Flash Gordon. Of course the silents are another matter. |

If we move away from Republic, I have to agree with you, Paul. Jean Rogers and Priscilla Lawson exuded sex in Flash - sound serialdom's most adult entry. |

I just started The Purple Monster Strikes. Not too bad for having a character wearing tights and some kind of helmet. |

I'm watching Dick Tracy Returns for the second time. First time through, I underrated it, probably because there's no fantasy element. One of the really good Republics, I now think, and right up there with Show Boat among Middleton's very best performances. Pa Stark is evil incarnate. There's nothing else in serials like the iron lung scene in Chapter 1, and the end of Chapter 2, where Pa essentially kills Tracy twice, is also pretty weird. |

Speaking of Middleton, I'm picking my way through WHO'S GUILTY? right now. Not a bad little number. I'm trying to stay away from IMDB in the event they reveal the identity of the villain, though I have a pretty good idea what the solution is. |

I was watching The Green Hornet on YouTube, but the thing looked like shit, so I bought the VCI 75th Anniversary package and rewatched chapter 1... Pretty good. That bug at the beginning of the chapter is not a hornet, it's a yellowjacket. There's a big difference, and I mean BIG. We had 2 European hornets on our patio a few years ago, and they're mean things, plus they have 3 stingers. The European Hornet has the black and yellow striped abdomen like a yellowjacket. They're hard to kill too. And they're MEAN, and I mean mean! I think it was Mort who mentioned the Hornet's mask on the thread about the Seth Rogen movie, and I like this (serial) mask better than the ones that just cover the eyes too. |

I'm half-way through the Republic version of the Phantom Rider. It's better than I expected. |

Watched chapter 6 of The Green Hornet, and I like it. The chapterplay isn't super special, but it's enjoyable. I am tiring of the close-ups of The Hornet and seeing his mouth move behind the mask and knowing that someone else is supplying the voice. |

Just back from our Annual Cliffhanger Fest and this year we showed Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars and individual chapters of every serial released in 1936. We also showed selected Republic serial chapters from the 40's and some chapters of later Buster Crabbe serials he made at Columbia. We also showed a newly discovered complete copy of Sons of Adventure compliments of Trev Scott. I'm one of the people who never cared too much for Flash Gordon but for some reason I enjoyed watching this serial again. It must have something to do with age!!!! But re-watching The Black Coin and Custer's Last Stand didn't change my opinion of either serial albeit by just watching a chapter of each. Barcroft |

Fun to contrast the first and last Flash Gordons. They're two very different animals. The first was bat**** crazy, with wild alien races, every-scrap-from-the-Universal-warehouse set and costume design, wacky stock footage and surprising levels of pulchritude. Also, it's one of the few serials where the hero registers major interest in the opposite sex from episode one (and let's not forget multiple villains lusting for Dale). Eventually they'd barely register the concept of two genders until the fadeout, and even then it was usually a "wanna have lunch or something?" moment. The last serial replaced men's hot pants and leftover Roman armor with military uniforms from Ruritanian romances (even on Ming!) and generally followed the more elegant tone that then prevailed in the comic strip. But Alex Raymond's increasingly impressive women, carefully posed and lovingly detailed, were toned way down. In fact, the various attractive ladies spend most of the serial in long gowns. That may explain why Flash and Ming are both way less hormonal this time around. It's much more standard issue that the original Flash, but it's well made and does have a certain posh thing going on.
