There are people who think their opinions are holy writ, trev, but not me. I won't bitch unless you ARE one of those people (and you aren't). I think I'm getting kinda crusty about serials, so perhaps I should just keep vewy, vewy quiet. |

Trev, obviously I sholda got OVERLAND WITH KIT CARSON from you..... cause the Thomas version really sucked (NOT the film, but the print AND the transfer). Now, I'd like to get its companion, GREAT ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOCK & you don't have it. WHY THE HELL NOT???????? |

I got the Wild Bill Elliott serial trilogy from Trev. That includes, of course, Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock. Are you saying that Trev doesn't offer that serial anymore? I still think that Overland with Kit Carson was one of the best serials that Columbia ever did. I think it was the best of the trilogy with Valley of Vanishing Men being the weakest. |

Hope I'm not one of the Holy Writ opinion makers Panzer-- that's never my intention. Personally, I appreciate different tastes and can take it when the balconeers toss rotten tomatoes at me for making fun of Ace Drummond or that I like Morgan Conway better than Ralph Byrd as Dick Tracy. Taste is what keeps the world fresh. |

Hey, I liked Ralph Byrd fine, BUT he didn't look a thing like Dick Tracy. Morgan Conway didn't look like him very much either, but he looked a helluva lot more like him than Ralph did. Now, Jack Holt was almost a spittin' image!! |

I wasn't talking about you, Andy. Only one guy around here has duck fits when people "dis" his pet heck. As for trev, he delivers an honest product at a good price and it's always a pleasure to do business with him, or just shoot the breeze. |

The story I heard is that Chester Gould based the look of Tracy on Holt. |

Different strokes for different folks - I found The Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock to be a terrific serial. Elliott (and others) have some great lines. The dual story line was kind of neat, as well. Although, this has to be the slowest moving wagon train in serials. Elliott seems to be able to get back and forth from town to the wagon train in an hour or so. However, it takes 15 chapters for the wagon train. I found the Kit Carson serial disappointing. Too many chapters have myriad extras in gunfights that seemingly go on forever. Its ok, but nothing special. Have not seen Vanishing Men, probably because I have heard nothing good about it. |

Quigley, I enjoy all three Elliott serials. How did you like Elliott's entrance in chapter one of HICKOK? It is one of the best grand entrances by a hero in any serial, right up there with THE LONE RANGER and ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION. VALLEY OF VANISHING MEN is an under rated serial with a fast pace, but the only fault is I could have done without some of the comedy. |

I'm on a crazy deadline so I took a stack of serials into my studio for background noise-- so this week here I'll be watching a lot of them-- it's also my chance to see what needs upgrading. Today I'm on THE SHADOW-- print is pretty nice from Classic Cliffhangers off eBay-- think I paid $5 for it-- but the serial is a lot worse than I remembered it. The Shadow here is a wimp when you compare him to the Spider-- although I like that Vincent is along and Victor Jory is certainly a solid actor who looks the part. Chapter One featured The Shadow battling it out in broad daylight wearing white socks (or worse-- no socks). The Black Tiger sounds a LOT like this fellow scientist of Cranston-- already in Chapter One I think I've figured the mystery. Still, entertaining and a solid Columbia. I'd rate it below Spider's Web, Batman, The Phantom and Secret Code, but above Superman, Atom Man and about any other Columbia post 1946. |
