Q of the J was the first totally disappointing serial I bought. Hated it.
To call it disappointing is an understatement, I say it is much worse than YOUNG EAGLES.

Yeah, it is, though riddle rider values it for its silent serial footage. For me, though, the direction and editing spoil it, not to mention the acting.

For me is was having almost no budget. Riddle Rider agreed with my estimate that it probably cost only about $15,000 to make. Compare that to Mascot's budgets for of about $70,000 and Universal's at $150,000 for the same year..

Having no money can be hard, but people with talent can deal with it. Nobody involved with that show could do a damn thing even if they had millions.

Look at Edgar Ulmer's Detour. It cost nothing but still gets shown. If somebody had known to hang on to the rights, they'd have a nice little source of income. It's no towering masterpiece but it's entertaining and I never lost money showing it. That's what real talent can bring to the table. I have to admire people who have it.

Panzer, do you agree with me that QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE is even worse than YOUNG EAGLES?

Well, to tell you the truth, Pa, I never made it all the way through Young Turkeys, but yeah, I think you're right. Queen has no entertainment value whatsoever, I know that much.

I will be watching Queen of the Jungle later this year. I have only about 9 sound serials left to watch and it is one of them. Come to it, it will be one of the Final Five as it's the only Independent serial I haven't seen. I confess to not particularly looking forward to it and wish 39 O 13 were still alive to suffer through it with me.

When you do watch QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE, also put on a chapter of YOUNG EAGLES for comparison. See if you agree with me and Panzer that QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE is much worse. Also refresh my memory and see if there are any scenes that were not shot in a studio.

Actually, Pa, there is a list of films I am hoping to never again have to subject myself to and Young Eagles is at the top of that list.

So what do I pull out as a followup to Queen of the Jungle?

My first viewing of Chick Carter. Great actors so far, but that song...
I'm gonna roll you a snowball
Such as never been seen

It is now burned into my brain and it hurts.

the cliffhangers seem to be the "dust yourself off and just walk away" variety.

Todd, you say that now, but YOUNG EAGLES will soon be second on your list of films you never want to see again.

Grampy, first QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE, then CHICK CARTER, DETECTIVE? I hope you don't plan to follow those up with HOP HARRIGAN or THE CLUTCHING HAND. Even ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN AFRICA is better then those. Before all of you start jumping on me about Cap Africa, at least the little new footage was directed by Spencer Bennet, and it didn't bore me stiff like the others did.

Ok, did I miss something or was one of the Chick Carter 'cliffhangers' Chick punching a bad guy, the bad guy falls and the chapter ends?
And then the start of the next chapter being the bad guy only fell a few feet into a sand pile and walked away from it unscathed.
Hpw many kids wooried about the bad guys's fate all week?

That's it for bad serials for a while-next up Mysterious Dr Satan.

By the way, my job is offshoring to Asia and the entire plant is spending the last few months at a near standstill. I'm watching these at my desk waiting for stuff to do.
