Last week I watched the 1936, 13 chapter Ace Drummond as I transferred it to dvd. Hadn't watched it since 1992. To me it's an above average Universal with a good story, action and locations. And I've always loved the recap of the previous cliffhanger depicted as a newspaper comic strip. John King did a good job as the hero but Jean Rogers dresses were way too long. |

I'm a fan of Ace as well, and am glad to hear that VCI has a good copy of it. I think it's one of the better Universals. I know folks poke fun of the song, but I never took anyone's dismissal of this serial seriously. It and Smilin' Jack are two I remember quite fondly. They're FNF-worthy, which is the highest praise I can give a serial. |

I only saw it once in a poor print, but I also enjoyed it as far as I can remember, so I might spring myself. Seems like there was a particularly silly cliffhanger, wherein Ace and Jean Rogers fly a small airplane into a building at a hundred miles an hour, only simply to walk away unhurt from the crash the next episode. |

I almost feel bad for saying this, but I have been watching at least one a day for the past month. When I get some in, I tend to be bad about going on a binge until I have them watched. I just love them things.

Some of the people who wrote the script also worked on THE WHISPERING SHADOW at Mascot. Both serials had the most inventive red herrings of any serial in bouncing suspicion from suspect to suspect. At the end, it was impossible for anyone to be revealed as the Dragon. |
