And as I've mentioned before, in Radar Men from the Moon, we determine our planet is under attack from heavily-armed superior forces from outer space bent on invading and conquering the Earth. So what do we do? Send three guys to fight 'em.

Not only that, three people who've built their own rocket ship and run their own company. In other words, the government outsources Earth's defense to Commando Cody!

LOL -- I never knew that Cody Laboratories was a subsidiary of Blackwater.

Well, in today's episode 7 of Pirates Treasure, they at least got on a boat. Ain't left the dock yet, but they're on it. One of the things I love about this serial is chapter after chapter, they've been playing "hot potato" with the map while never getting anywhere. It's a running gag! (And a leaping gag, and a flying gag, and a fighting gag.) Remember the guy on The Gong Show that used to hold a trumpet and sing a song about "I'm gonna play my trumpet for you, right now!" while never actually playing the trumpet?

Also up to chapter 7 of The Red Rider, chapter 8 of The Galloping Ghost, chapter 10 of King of the Mounties, chapter 6 of Tex Granger, chapter 5 of Government Agents vs. Phantom Legion, and chapter 12 of The Spider Returns. That's a LOT o' chapterplay action. Kids in the '40s wish they were me, I'll bet.

Million dollar dialog, from The Red Rider: "Don't be surprised if you find yourself against a wall some morning, having a lead breakfast."

That line actually borders on priceless.... ;)

Well I have doing double duty with the cliffhangers this week I have Riders of Death Valley downstairs in the Den and Serial Squadrons "Phantom Empire" upstairs in the Bedroom DVD....

I had forgotten that Universal billed this as "The Million Dollar Serial" and with the cast Dick Foran, Leo Carillo, Noah Beery Jr., Buck Jones along with Charles Bickford and Lon Chaney Jr. (probably right before his rise to stardom as the Wolfman) along with numerous recognizable actors..I am enjoying the serial so far and since it has many of these film actors as opposed to traditional serial actors it plays like a large scale film (or mini series)....

I particularly like Buck Jones and his banter with Dick Forans character...they play off well with each other...

The Phantom Empire has always had a special place in my heart, not only for the sheer "way out there story" but it was one of the few Serials they showed on NY television (along with Undersea Kingdom) in the early sixties...and it still holds up as sheer popcorn popping fun..

The Print from Serial Squadron is very clean and personally I don't mind the tinting process. however if there is a better "unrestored" print in good old Black and white I will take a recommendation. overall they did a nice job with it...

now that I am older(defiantly) and wiser (that's out for a vote) there are two things in Phantom Empire that are making me curious but also snickering of the insanity of it..

first..........Why did the Muranian's put that silly brim on the heads of their robots other than to look like cowboys...

second.....Gene Autry a shrewd businessman in real life, has this contract that he has to do the radio ranch show every day at the same time or they lose radio ranch......obviously he got a new agent when he decided to buy sports franchises...I am laughing about this because getting back to the ranch to do the radio show is a cliffhanger in itself! :D :D :D

and finally to get back to Buck Jones..

1. Although I passed up on buying it for a mere bag of shells at the VCI blowout. I am interested in watching his last film "Dawn on the Great Divide" anyone seen it? and care to comment?

I'm a big Buck Jones fan but I've never cared for DAWN ON THE GREAT DIVIDE. I've seen it three times over a thirty-year period, and it leaves me cold every time. Can't really put my finger on why that is, but the thing just doesn't click for me.

More million-dollar dialog from The Red Ryder....
Ed Cobb sings a love song (off key) he's written for his unrequited love, and then we get this exchange.

Ed: "That oughtta get her!"
Buck: "Yeah. Mad."

I'm up to chapter 9 of the Wolf Dog by Mascot (1933). Pretty standard "evil guardian out to swindle rightful young heir" mixed with "villan after super-destructive scientific weapon invented to promote peace (!)" plotlines. George J. Lewis is good as the stalwart hero with Frankie Darro as the young heir and Boots Mallory aboard as eye candy. The real star of the show however is Rin Tin Tin Jr as the Wolf Dog. The canine equivalent of Jack Holt in Holt of the Secret Service. Pal, the Wolf Dog is tough.

Where is your copy of Wolf Dog from, BT? And how is the quality?

Picked up a vhs of Wolf Dog at a convention years ago. The print is a bit choppy and many of the cliffhangers are cut short, but I'm pretty sure this is the same print everyone else has. Quality is not pristine, but it's good.

If you're looking for a copy, check VCI, Shay, Orsak or the usual suspects.

Thanks, BT. I've heard the Serial Squadron is restoring this one, so I'll just wait for the reviews on that one.

I always wince when I see references to "great" serials. Flash Gordon, delightful as it is, is not a "great" movie for the pure and simple reason that it's silly. I don't love serials because they're great, but because they give me a window into a parallel universe where the improbable always happens: where madmen both good and bad stalk the streets in silk costumes with flowing capes without getting thrown in the drunk tank; where people are constantly getting into fistfights without losing their fedoras; and where the hero has to vamoose out of the sunken city a mile under his ranch to make his radio broadcast.

Though I am a bit disappointed as an adult by the shocking rarity of secret passages and weapons in the real world, the fact that no beclawed hand ever reached around a shadowy corner to grab me made my real life a satisfyingly cozy one, at least until 911 -- that was when real life got invaded by serial characters.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

Who wants their movies to be like real live?

And the converse would be even worse. Recall the amount of 'collateral damage' in the average serial? Or for that matter, Lethal Weapon 36?
