I guess it's a little prissy of me, but I always wonder about the old ladies who had to clean up those wrecked barrooms. I can just hear them muttering under their breaths about the "Gah dam henchmen in their gah dam fedoras..."

I always wince when I see references to "great" serials. Flash Gordon, delightful as it is, is not a "great" movie for the pure and simple reason that it's silly.

I'm just guessin' here, PP, bu I think the majority of serial fans call any serial "great" in the context of comparing them to other serials, not "real" films.

.......and I have always wondered about the carnage left after a cowboy chase on horseback between the robbers and the hero. No matter how many gang members there are, they are almost always whittled down to two or three survivors by the hero, before they finally make good their escape, if they get away at all. Now when a good guy, and not necessarily the hero, is wounded or even killed, we always see him thrown over a horse by a samaritan and brought to town to see the doc or the undertaker, but we never see anyone even bat an eye about the outlaw corpses littering the countryside after a shootout. Do they just leave them to rot, or be carried off by varmints? Does the undertaker take it upon himself to go out and rid the roadside of this filth? I think not, or he'd soon go broke! :P
Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog. It's just little ol' me...

In Don Daredevil Rides Again, Lee Hadley (and/or Gary Taylor) gets into a barroom brawl and 'busts up the place' every time he goes into that darned saloon. (We're up to chapter 8 and I think he's done this about 6 times already!). I wonder why the owner doesn't go to the sheriff and get this Hadley guy and his pals barred from the joint permanently!
How can I waste your time today?

True enough, Cap. What honest saloon owners there were (probably not too many!) should have hung a big sign - Serial Actors & Stunt Men - Keep Out!

More million dollar dialog, from Pirate's Treasure.... Dick has been saved from the fire in the ship's hold thanks to his beautiful girlfriend, whom he thanks with a sincere, "It was your cry that ROUSED me!"

I don't know that I'd call it million-dollar dialogue. Half a million, maybe. Certainly it's not in the same tax bracket as "I'd rock you to sleep if I had a rock."

Later, she exclaims breathlessly, "Oh Dick! I can hardly wait for you to get it open!"

She's talking about the treasure chest. You guys keep your filthy minds out of the gutter.

What a fun serial this is! And today there was a huge fight with star Talmadge slugging it out sans shirt... How Cap'n Kirkian!

This serial is so good, it makes me long for a sequel that was never made. *sigh* Any other early-'30s serials out there that come close to this one, gang?

Have you seen THE VANISHING SHADOW yet, Gravy? It looks much more expensive than any other pre FLASH GORDON Universal. Chapter 11 is of of the greatest episodes of all time with the good scientist shot in the head, and loses his mind, and sends his robot to run amok. Richard Cramer and Edmund Cobb just flee the scene in absolute terror.

I am enjoying THE MIRACLE RIDER, a fun Mascot serial (aren't they all?). This is also my first (!) Tom Mix experience. I like him.

Okay, finished episode 9 of Tex Granger... The hero, frankly, is dumb. The guy's just... stupid. An explosion! Jimmy is lying prone on the floor, unconscious, blackened with soot. Tex looks down at him and says, "Big Moose" style, "Jimmy's been HURT!" Gee, Tex, ya think?

This is Duke's chapter, anyway. The doggy pursues the villains, turns 'em in, tracks 'em once they get away, and spots not one but two of their hideouts. They shoot at him, and he plays dead, too (I think he learned that trick from watching Buck Jones movies).

By the way, with everything else going on, I had kinda forgotten this was a "masked hero" serial and I was genuinely surprised when Tex left Peggy Stewart to run into the bushes and started taking his shirt off at the end of the chapter. What th'?!?!?
