I am nothing if not patient. It's not like I don't have any serials to watch!

I have only one chapter left in Deadwood Dick, which I'm surprised to find I really like. Next I'm heading for more traditional ground and watching Tiger Woman.

I'm presently watching the Grapevine Version of Mystery Mountain. A huge stepup from Alpha Video's version as well as my old VHS copy. An entertaining serial from Mascot.

Pirate Treasure... Continues to make me giggle aloud. I love how Talmadge blows his lines occasionally; makes him seem more real.

This episode (#10) introduces the fierce savage warriors of the island, who speak a "strange, exotic" language that only the Captain can understand. Well, the Captain and I, actually: they speak SPANISH. Si, es la verdad! *LOL*

I love this serial

P.S. A comment on Government Agents vs. the Phantom Legion, which I'm also watching... Y'know how henchmen in Republic serials always wear nice suits and ties and fedoras? Well, has anybody ever looked LESS comfortable in a nice suit than Dick Curtis? I think not. It's like putting a suit on Crash Corrigan -- over his gorilla outfit in Monster and the Ape -- it just don't "suit" him...

Getting ready to start on Overland Mail. It is the only serial of the titles I bought as part of VCI's sale. Looking forward to this one as I've heard several sources refer to it as Chaney's best serial.

From The Red Rider:

After Buck Jones admits helping his prisoner, Silent Slade, convicted but actually innocent, to escape from jail...

Bill Desmond: "Wasn't that a funny thing for a sheriff to do?"
Buck Jones: "I was a funny sheriff, I guess."

Watched the second episode of Battling with Buffalo Bill, a very fun serial from 1931, and I have to thank Doc Grood for giving me a greater appreciation of it... I couldn't help but think, "If he had released this thing, all these musicless sequences -- which have only the sound of horses storming and Redskins whooping and bullets blazing -- would have music dubbed in over them, and added sound effects, totally distracting from the wonderful effect of feeling like it's 1931 all over again." So thanks, Eric. Sincerely.

Tom Tyler is terrific in this serial... a lean, mean fighting machine. I love his look at Buffalo Bill, too. Yes, this is a primitive piece of filmwork from the early talkie era, but that is part of its charm, not a weakness. And in episode two, the narrator guy is back at the beginning to recap the story for us, and I LOVE that guy. On Channel Balcony, maybe someday we'll have the ability to stream old serials, cartoons, shorts and features and I'm gonna hire somebody to dress up like this guy and introduce all our cowboy pitchers.

I watched the first chapter of Tiger Woman last night, and I think I'm going to love this one. That's got to be one of the best cliffhangers ever.

Episode 8 of Government Agents vs. Phantom Legion not only featured a very well-staged fight on a wharf between Our Man Hal and three villains, but had a cameo by Roy Barcroft as "The Voice Guy on the Boat Radio"!

I still think, though, that somebody wrote this thing in their sleep based upon prior knowledge of Republic serials. Isn't an original concept or scene or character to be found, it's all rehashed from earlier chapterplays.

Rodney, Tiger Woman is fun all the way through. Linda Stirling looks great in her tiger... err.. leopard... err.. tiger suit (must have been a mix-up at the cleaners).

As far as Gov't Agents versus the Phantom Legion, the best writing is on the cover of the laser disc:

"The year was 1951, and America's emotions were on edge. Politicians warned of Communist infiltrators. And the spread of atomic secrets posed an ominous new threat. In so feverish a climate, Saturday matinee fans were more than ready for the excitement and intrigue of Government Agents vs. Phantom Legion!"

At least it sounds exciting, doesn't it?!

I'm watching on of my VCI sale purchases, Raiders of Ghost City, and am pleasantly surprized. I did not expect much with Dennis Moore as the star but it is quite good. Joe Sawyer is as good a side-kick as he was in Rin Tin Tin (TV). Lionel Atwill is the heavy doing a great job. The plot has enough interest points to keep it going through 12 chapters. Somewhat of a hidden gem from Universal.

I've always felt Dennis Moore was somewhat underrated. I think "Raiders" was the first thing I saw him in, so that may have left me with a very favorable impression, but I've also enjoyed his work in anything I've subsequently seen him in. I agree with your opinion of the serial as a whole. Good stuff!
Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog. It's just little ol' me...

This morning over breakfast (8 oz. of Greek nonfat plain yogurt, 6 oz. of cherries, 2 oz. of oatmeal, and was it good!) I watched the 11th episode of Pirate's Treasure, and I am going to miss this serial when it's over... One of the most fun serials to watch ever, and the first serial in a long time that I was actually jazzed to see every week. I keep the serials I'm watching on a shelf, and take the one on the left to watch and when that one is done, I put it back on the right, ya git me? That way I just go through them one by one a day at a time. Well, every time Tex Granger comes up, I go, "Hmm... Tex Granger. Well, okay." Every time The Red Rider comes up, I go, "Oh, good, Buck Jones." Every time Pirate's Treasure comes up, I go, "YES!!!! PIRATE'S TREASURE!!!"

I've been busy the last couple days. But today I finally got a chance to start on Overland Mail. My first impression is that it is going to be an above average version of your typical western serial.
